View Full Version : Top five most underrated wooden coasters. (long)

(AIR-TIME)

Doesn't it seem like most of the best coasters out there are underrated and whats considered best is overrated? Here are a few wooden coasters that are way underrated in my opinion starting with one of the best wooden coasters out there.

1. Swamp Fox, Myrtle Beach SC. 1966 (rebuilt to exact blueprint in 1991 after hurricane hugo) This coaster is amazing and you never hear about it!? This is one of John Allen's best designs and it still runs with standard lapbars and no trim brakes. On a hot summer night this coaster can deliver as much air-time as any coaster can and its probably the most beautiful as well with track lights from start to finish! I was glad to see the Pavilion's highly popular Hurricane CCI coaster built next door to the Swamp Fox so more people might get a chance to experice this masterpiece.

2. Cyclops, Wisconsin Dells 1995 Seems like this coaster is rarely open and Zues gets all the attention, but if you're lucky enough to get a chance to ride this do so!!! This coaster is so underrated, it has standard lapbars with no trim brakes and some of the most wicked drops found on any coaster! The back seat is increadible, you get slammed into the lapbar on the coasters steep fouth drop like no other coaster I've been on! You even have to be over 18 years old to ride the backseat!!!!! I dont know if they still have that policy but there use to be a sign saying that last time I was there!

3. Cannonball, Gulf Shores Alabama 1995 Seems like '95 was a great year for CCI, that year brought us Raven, Cyclops and Cannonball all with standard lapbars! When I first rode cannonball was on a trip to ride Rampage at visionland, I didn't expect much from this small 65 footer but to my surprise it was as good as Rampage if not better!!! I even rode it alone because of their high prices you never see any people there. I cant imagine what this coaster would be like with a full train!? Great air-time with some laterals at the same time makes this coaster very wild and underrated, I'd say a lot of people dont even know about it.
4. Starliner, Panama City Beach Fl, 1963 Here's another great example of an excelent John Allen coaster lost in time. This coaster is just as good as ever, standard lapbars & no trim brakes and some super air-time! I was blown away first time I rode this ride, the tunnel has a slammer speedbump thats awesome and the diving turnaround is super! You pick up so much speed that the speedbump following the turnaround works in every seat! This coaster is close to Cannonball and its great to combine them in a trip!

5. Screechin' Eagle Middletown OH. 1927 THis coaster located in Americana is probably (the most) underrated coaster out there. For a while all I heard about was the Big Dipper at Geauga Lake, well after riding Screechin' Eagle I can say it blows big dipper away! This coaster is 78 feet tall and has some of the best air-time! The front and back seats work on every hill!!! Its not the fastest, but the hills are so sharp that its extreme! The turnaround is just plane violent in the backseat! This coaster has the old Elitch Gardens Wildcat PTC rolling stock trains too!!! Standard lapbars with much more room than the new PTC trains! Unbelieveable! If you get a chance to ride this coaster, (considering the park reopens) Please do so, you wont be disapointed!

Well I would ride this coaster, but there's just one problem. Americana is closed for now. It should reopen in 2002 or 2003, maybe with some new coasters. Cincy COULD have two good parks, of course there are also Coney Island and Stricker's Grove, which has a coaster called the Tornado that is pretty underrated.

I don't know the Top 5 underrated woodies, but I know that American Eagle @ SFGAm is really underrated. The Eagle is awesome!!

Boulder Dash at Lake Compounce is a fabulous ride the way it curls through the woods past rochs and cliffs. Although its awesome, it gets NO credit.

I think being a top 10 wood coaster is enough credit for Boulder Dash already. It is an amazing ride anyway.

may the FORCE be with you
06-25-2001, 09:14 PM
Jack Rabbitt at Kennywood doesn't get enough credit if you ask me, becuase its so small. But if you like airtime this is THE RIDE. It's like MF's hill without a lap bar. It has nothing holding you in except a HUGE seatbelt, way too big (esp if you're a single rider!). So you are free to fly. Grizzly at PKD is always forgotten too.

The Jack Rabbit is definitely way underrated, especially for its air-time...and Boulder Dash has enough attention (deservedly) focused on it.

[ This Message was edited by: TopGun321 on 2001-06-25 21:21 ]

Grizzly at PKD is starting to take lessons from Rotting Lumber....I mean Rolling Thunder. They seriously need to do some rail work on this little bear because she squeals in agony on all the turns. I don't care for being showered in rust. As for swampfox, thats a fun coaster, but it doesn't rank with my top woodies. Perhaps because its been 7 years since I rode it.

What about Screamin' Eagle SFSTL. Great layout and great air time. NOT TO MENTION HOW SMOOTH IT IS (JK )
Grizzly has been retracked in many spots through the circuit within the past couple years and it has made the ride a bit smoother. It still does squeek in spots, I agree....but if there's any coaster that needs to be fixed at PKD it's The Hurler. PLEASE add some grease to those rails!

The Great American Scream Machine at SFoG is very underrated. It goes up to 60 mph and provides extreme airtime ledt and right.
I love GASM. Its the best out-and-back woodie imo.

Just to clarify, I didn't lock this thread because the old "Most Underrated Coaster" thread seems to have included steelies for the most part. I think looking at the most forgotten woodies is more interesting because there are so many that get absolutely no recogntition.

The Great American Scream Machine at SFoG is one of the top ones in my book. No one really mentions those Hurler machines at Paramount parks much but the Hurler at Carowinds is gave an awesome ride when I was there. Love those high banked turns.

Mr. Twister II at Elitch Gardens is really underrated. Everybody just talks about how the original Mr. Twister was so much better, but Mr. Twister II is still awesome! What a cool layout it has too, just stainding in that middle courtyard with track on all sides. Awesome!

i know dis is tha American Coaster Forum, but the most underated wooden coaster would have to be 'The Coaster' at Playland, Vancouver, that is the best coaster in the world, once off the first drop, u are neva in ya seat untill u return to the station. TONNES of airtime.

Magnum will always rule!
06-26-2001, 07:23 PM
I didn't even know that two of those existed. On cyclops you have to be 12 for the back seat now.

Screechin Eagle at Americana in Middletown, OH. It's simply the best one I've ever ridden, just beware of the back seat if you bruise easily.

here are my picks for the top 5 most underrated wooden coasters............

1.) Cannonball Run---this wooden coaster was only built in 1995. it is 65ft. tall with a 63ft. drop, 4 bunny hills a helix, no trim brakes, and aweseom lateral G's going into the brake run.
This coaster is always a walk-on (at least everytime ive seen it and ridden it it was) this coaster also has the most airtime ive ever experienced! the best thing about this coaster is that it gives you 2 CIRCUITS everytime you ride.

2.) Swamp Fox--this wooden coaster was great! ive only gotten to ride it twice. This is the first ive heard anyone mention it in years. The fact that the Hurricane is there now makes it easier to atrract more attention which will be good.

3.) Screechin' Eagle--this one is in desire need for more ppl to recognize it. This was an excellent coaster. I almost forgot it even existed!

4.)Grizzly@PKD--this was my first coaster! i would die to see this one torn down. lets hope PKD never has to do that!!!! it is kinda set in the back of the park and is not getting as much attention as it used to. id like to see this on a tv show one day, especially since i may not be able to ride it again due to where i live.

5.)Colossus@SFMM--this one probably isnt that underrated but i think not many ppl pay it attention anymore. the entrance to the station and queues are hidden and the only reallly good places to see it are from Goliath, Viper, and possibly Riddlers Revenge. I was behind someone on Goliath that said "What coaster is that, this is my 3rd time here and its the first time ive seen it, does it even still work?" I mean, that is bad. That was one coaster i was looking forward to riding when i went there, and then have to hear that someone didnt even know it exisited. i almost cried! (sarcasm) lol!

my top five would be:

3. Blue Streak at Cedar Point
4. Bobsleds at Seabreeze
5. Racer at PKI

I would probably have to say that the Racer at PKI is very under-rated coaster... especially the backwards one. It's a very simple out and back, but it's fun... there's not much mention of it, though.

dania beach hurricane is totally underrated, just cuz its not 300 feet or 90 mph, doesnt mean its not fun, its got fun airtime and great drops. and blue streak, i know it used to be better, but its still a cool ride.

Outlaw at Adventureland in Des Moines ,Iowa. This small CCI packs a great punch. Nonstop hills and turns. There isn't a flat or dead spot on this entire ride. Go out of your way to ride this. It's an absolute blast.

Grizzly is WAY underratted. But its roughness is part of what makes it a great ride. The lats are great on the ride. Hurler is under rated as well.

Well, I have couple. Both are at SFWoA. The Villain is one of the greatest woodies I have ever ridden. I love that thing. And the Big Dipper. This baby is a classic, almost 75 years old, and she is running wonderful, and let me say this, your rear shall be off the seat 65% of the time. This is nirvana for airtime, and only a single lap bar to hold you in. This baby is a classic, and a must ride in Ohio even if it isn't the tallest of fastest.

My top underrated woody is definately GASM at SFoG. That ride is great. Speed, Airtime, More Speed, and that awesome head chopper at the end before you slam into the brakes. I had grown to dislike this coaster, but it's running amazingly this year!

(1) Jack Rabbit at Kennywood: If you know nothing about its double-dip, you haven't lived. Everyone has a scary story to tell about how they almost fell out or landed in another seat. Number of kills since opening in 1923? Zippo!

(2) Roar at SF America: A twister that keeps its momentum throughout the ride.

(3) Twister II at SF Denver: I heard nothing but bad reviews about it -- But after riding it, I fell in love!

(4) Comet at Hersheypark: Small, yes; But how many coasters can you almost touch the track when leaning forward in the front car? This coaster puts a smile on my face everytime I ride it.

(5) Racer at Kennywood: The ride operators always make it a race. I'll bet you can't name another coaster that you can shake hands with your opponents while racing around the track!

beltzies64

Here is my list, starting at 5 and working my way up to 1:

5. Villain - One of the better CCI coasters, it is hardly ever mentioned

4. Jackrabbit - As mentioned above, the double dip is really fun. And the only restraint is a leather belt!

3. Blue Streak - Not a bad little out and back

2. Roar - Just as good as Ghostrider IMO

1. Wildcat - It is GCI's first, and perhaps their best.

Kennywood Jack Rabbit for sure. Nothing beats that double dip!!

07-28-2001, 01:44 PM
Jack Rabbit yep, it's a great, classic John A. Miller that has survied almost 80 years without being changed(other than tunnels coming and going) and the double dip is amazing, you really feel like you're gonna fly off the track, expecially in the first seat!

Honorable mentions goto Twister 2, Kennywood Racer, Blue Streak at newly reopened Conneaut Lake Park(near Erie, PA)

1. Big Dipper at SFWoA- I rode this sucker this summer and it has the best airtime of any coaster outside Kennywood. I loved it.

2. Comet at Hersheypark- Another excellent oldie. This is one of my all time favs. Great drops and airtime, and just an overall fun coaster.

3. Racer at Kennywood- The greatest racing coaster of all time. This has to be just one of the most all out fun coasters there is.

4. Jackrabbit at Kennywood- Kennywood has double trouble with these two classic gems. This coaster has the funkiest layout of all time and the best single moment of airtime on any coaster period.

5. Zippin Pippin at Libertyland- Pretty much the only reason this pathetic park should even deserve to exists. It was also Elvis' favorite coaster! Hubba-hubba.

Viper at Six Flags Great America is one of the most underrated woodies in the world. It may not be tall, but it sure packs a punch. It's easily one of my top 10 woodies. Cornball Express at Indiana Beach is a fine coaster as well which receives little recognition. It delivers some great airtime and has good headchoppers.

Racer at Kings Island is very underrated. It may be old, but it's still one of the best out and back woodies and wooden racers in the country.

Definately Cyclops @ Big Chief Carts And Coasters in the Wisconsin Dells. As stated at the beginning of tis thread, this thing is an airtime monster. You get the single lap bar for both riders. The back seat is the best wooden coaster ride I have ever had. There is an intense drop midcourse on the ride that had me literally standing because of the airtime. I thought I was going to get ripped out of the ride. I have also seen a lot of people lose stuff on that drop! I never saw an age limit for that seat, but I would think only the brave need apply for the back on that coaster.

As for any other under rated woods, I would have to say Viper @ SFGAm, although I think the word is getting out about that one. Also, everyone knocks Raging Wolf Bobs which I thought was quite fun!

Cheers,

Bob Hansen

those are definetly the two most underrated woodies. they are my two of my 3 favorite woodies.
grizzly is my favorite woodie ever.
