I love all coasters, but if I had to compare them at the very bottom of my list down behind wild mouse coasters and bobsleds would come Vortex at Paramount's Carowinds. It just lacks something (everything lol). Also, Raptor is WAY overhyped.

I think most people will agree with these two words IRON WOLF.

That was their first coaster, so you can't really blame them. And it was good for its time.

Probably Oblivion...i say in my defance that it is short and is a one-trick ride...but it was a world first...WHY ISN'T THIS IN THE WORLDWIDE COASTERS SECTION!

there are a few Beemers in the rest of the world y'know!

Batman's Knight Flight @ SF Ohio (or whatever it's called this year)followed by most of their stand-ups, except maybe the Georgia Scorcher.

Best would be Apollo's Chariot, Medusa, Hulk, Great Bear, Montu, Kraken, and Raptor. (no particular order)

Oblivion, this although isn't bad the first time you ride it, it needs more. Alton towers could of at least made the drop vertical which was rather imbaressing when the offical angle was recorded at 83 degrees and the park could also add some more track, or a simple inversion in the winter months which would make the ride alot more exciting and possibly one of the best B&M's.

None of the B&M's I have been on were bad

MarkRenwick
05-08-2001, 10:08 AM
Oblivion isn't bad and the drop couldn't have been any steaper unless their were supports around the drop holding it up and taht would ruin the look of the ride.

the ride isn't meant to have anything else but the drop thats the ride and thats what it was designed ofr. Plus their isn't any room to extend it and why wouldthey when it is the parks second most popular coaster (when i went the other week had an 1hr longer queu than nemesis and it has an higher hourly capacity)

MarkRenwick
05-08-2001, 10:09 AM
actually the offcial angle is 87.5 not 83

Mantis (The Coaster Formerly Known as Banshee) gets my vote, mostly due to the fact the upkeep has gone to pot. When it first opened, I was pretty excited about riding it, and it was really good then, nice high-G loop, and lots twists and turns. However I rode it on Sunday (opening day at CP) and ow ow ow!!! that thing hurt badly, so bad it would make the folks at TOGO green with envy. I remember thinking as we got to the block brake "get me off of this thing!!!!" The set hurt my thighs and "nether-regions", the horsecollars bashed my head all over the place , and the wheels were literally square. Put it this way, when Mean Streak is very smooth by comparison, you know its rough.

I don't know how anyone can say that Raptor is over-hyped. It's the best coaster at CP. Sorry but I haven't been on MF yet, and IMHO Magnum is the one that's over-hyped.

By the way, Worst B&M? Definitely Mantis!

Chris L
05-09-2001, 05:35 PM
By the means of 'worst', as in being the least exciting or pleasurable of the ones that were designed and construcuted by B&M (I say that because they are all fun in their own ways), I would have to say their earliest attempts such as the Iron Wolf, and the Vortexes are the worst on the list. Mantis is also a pretty painful ride. I've never felt any such pain (Pain in the many regions on my legs and slight head jarring) on other stand-ups that including the Togo models.

well i have to say that the worst b&m is more of a class of b&m coasters. The stand up models, but b&m tells every one they are not as good as the rest. So it is the parks falt for buying b/c b&m warns there customers.

I personally love Mantis. I rode it in September 1999 and it was a really good coaster. It may have even been my favorite at Cedar Point, but it's a tough call with Raptor and Magnum in such close competition.

Probaly Mantis. I'm From Atlanta and we drove 14 hours to ride Mantis and Millenium Force. It was very dissapointing. The second half of the ride is an exact copy of the Georgia Scorcher. And what's with the trim brakes on the first drop?
I gotta say, B&M coasters are hard to fault but all of their "smaller" stand-ups don't seem to be aging quite so well. Riddler's Revenge is still as awesome as ever.

The Georgia Scorcher is the ONLY stand up I've ever liked, of any manufacturer. It's the only totally painless one.

BKF at SFWoA is my worst multi-element B&M. Surprisingly rough to be so small with awkward transitions. It was my biggest new coaster disappointment of last summer, as I had been anticipating it all year after riding Medusa umpteen times the year before. It makes Kumba seem like a soothing back rub, despite its age.

The worst B&M IMO is the Georgia Schorcher. The thing is under 30sec, has a 100ft drop, and only 2 inversions! It is also one of the roughest B&M's I've been on. I've been on it 12 times this season and every one of the rides has been rough. The ride just plain sucks.

Well it isn't B&M's fault the ride is so small and boring. SFOG had them build it in a rectangle about 100ft. wide and 2000ft. long. B&M did a great job designing it, but it's to bad SF wouldn't have put more money and space into it.

I can honestly say that I have never been on a bad B&M, but Medusa at SFGAdv was a disapointment. I rode it 3 times straight, front, middle, back, and I simply find it to have no intensity. Its not a screamer, its like too smooth or something, I don't know. Granted I liked the coaster, but it just didn't thrill me like the other Beamers I have ridden. And they say floorless coasters are supposed to give you the feel of a front seat ride no matter where you sit??? thats a joke in my opinion. Even the front wasn't that thrilling. Think the most entertaining part of the ride was the lift hill because I could watch the gorillas walking all over this brand new minivan that was attempting to go through the safari, I could only guess at the damage to that person's paint job, but it was funny.

[ This Message was edited by: DrachenFire96 on 2001-06-06 01:57 ]

How can you say Mantis is rough?! It's smooth!! Everytime I ride it I enjoy it!! And by the way, the brakes on the hill: THEY ARE THERE FOR YOUR SAFETY! Cedar Point doesn't want any of their coasters to be over 5 G's. I'm perfectly okay with CP making sure that their rides arent painful. Even if some of them are a little ( Mean Streak ) their still good.

Many people I know that have ridden other Beemers (I've only 1) tell me that Great Bear is the worst. They say it stinks and stuff. Great Bear is still an awesome coaster. When I rode front row I was blown away. The only thing I figure that is not as good is it's shortness (2800 ft)

Call me a big fat coaster enthusiast, but I think that B&M did one hell of a job putting an almost 2000 foot loong coaster into the space that they did. The land is so tiny, yet it is still fun for me. Also, Top Gun @PGA is still a good coaster to me because it is still smooth and a lot of fun but still short. whatever...

I used to think that B&M only made great coasters. My opinion has changed since then. Mantis is the worst B&M I've been on, but none of the new ones I've ridden (Batman Knight Flight, Dueling Dragons, Hulk, etc) have been as smooth as my first B&M, Raptor. It seems like they've gone for height and speed, and in the process have increased the intensity greatly. I was very disappointed when I got off of DD:Ice. Sure Fire was better, but they're both brand new, and I wonder what Ice will be like in 10 years. B&M should come to the same conclusion that CCI did. You don't have to be huge to be great.

Well, I have a problem with nearly all B&M coasters, because I am just a bit too big for the seats... this was not always the case, they shortened the seatbelts and my back is too long... HOWEVER, on Medusa at SFMW, they built a couple seats that have two belts on the side rather than one up the middle. So I can finally ride at least one B&M... and WHAT A RIDE IT IS!

Come to think of it, the older generation B&M coasters kind of fall behind the newer and more technologically advanced ones.
What I'm saying is that you shouldn't have to ride a coaster 10 times so that you can experiment with seat locations and how to position your body before it is a good ride. I don't like feeling like I just finished up a boxing match when I get off a coaster. The Dragons are FAR better than Mantis. It could also be that I am taller than most riders, so that could be part of the problem. When Mantis opened up it was a very good ride, however in its current state it isn't.

Mantis0014
07-03-2001, 12:24 PM
OK i know this is pathetic but i've only been on 2 beemers, Raptor and Mantis. I don't see how Mantis could be THAT bad that it makes your head hurt unless you ride in the back. But since I know that it is a little rough, I would NOT ride in the back. I went with some friends a couple weeks back and we rode in the front 2 out of 3 times we went on it, and i kept my hands up the whole way on the second front seat ride(not sure about the first) and i had no trace of a headache whatsoever when i got off. And could you imagine what that ride would be like withOUT the brakes on the first drop? It would make it even more intense(I prefer not to say "rough"). And they did put the breaks on the first drop cause people were coming close to blackout. This is a great ride (although the bicycle seats do hurt a tad). Oh and Raptor is smoother but i like Mantis better. More thrilling.

Chip

Um, Flashback at SFMM wasn't built by B&M. It may look like it because of the box track and four-across seating, but it was really built by Intamin AG. Matter of fact, it was the first coaster with four-across seating. Not a B&M coaster, though. Worst B&M? I'd have to say Mantis, but that was a pretty cool ride. I haven't ridden that many B&M's. Wait until I come back from Florida to cast my vote!

Vortex at pga. Way to short and nothing special. One time my legs dangled because they diddnt lock it when they said they would, and you know how that story goes.

I have yet to ride a bad B&M coaster.

I do have to say though, and many will agree and disagree, that the Talon doesn't live up to the hype.

Dont' get me wrong, I loved the Talon, and still do....and it might be the absolute favorite coaster of anyone who has experienced very few if any B&M inverted coasters.
Let's just say I went onto the Talon with very, and I mean, VERY high expectations. I expected to have my mind blown away to Pluto and back, but I have been on better, similiar coasters.

Never mind....my expectations were too high, Talon is awesome!! Forget the front seat, go to the very back!!!! LOL!!!

Iron Wolf is definently the worst. I loved Mantis. It was one of my favorite rides there. If you guys hate it so much then don't ride it and there will be less wait for me.
I didn't like Batman The Ride at SFMM. I found it rough and too fast for its length. I love to be able to see a coaster properly and be able to appreciate smooth inversions. Compared to Nemesis, or something REALLY smooth like Ridlers Revenge (Maybe not a b&m) Batman was shaky.

Vortex at PGA is the worst. But the other to "clones" of this look bad too (vortex at Carowinds, and Iron Wolf).

How can you hate Iron Wolf! It's the best B+M out there! I mean it's compact, super twisted layout is hard to beat. And since the new harnesses have been somewhat broken in (especially the front) the ride is smooth and fun. I love the Iron Wolf! It's my favorite ride, and, IT NEVER SLOWS DOWN!

Ugh, this topic is mainly an excuse to fawn over B&M and either answer "There is no such thing as a bad B&M" or "Well Mantis kind of but you know that's okay because it's just a little rough but not much and that's okay nothing against Claude and walt they still rule it's just a little rough". I would say that Medusa is up there for my least favorite B&M, right with Talon. Two forceless, boring, utterly unexciting piles of nothing.

Im moving this because it fits one of the following
-"What is the best..........?"
-"What is the worst..........?"
-"..........versus.........."
-"What's your favorite..........?"
-"What's your least favorite..........?"
-"Which is better..........or..........?"
-"Which is worse..........or.........."?
-Any other superlative

I'm moving this thread to "Polls" now.

anyone that says iron wolf is pissing me off really bad. this is a really good ride. it is one of the most intense B&M's out there. all of the people that bash it probably don't remember it when it just came out and was the smoothest thing in the world and one of the top coasters. it was great and still is.

I would have to sya RAPTOR, it banged your head a little at the nd and that like 478973490634 degree turn around, it seemed like that helix would never stop and i would barf up my lungs. I rode mantis and i liked it a lot, the only part it hurts is the corkscrew which bangs your head a little. it is cool how you fell waight less at the top, they should remove the brakes on the hil though, it owuld be more fun.

Like others have said, you can't blame a company for their first few coasters not being as good as their latest. However...I found that Vortex and PCaroWinds just...lacked something I like about Beemers...ah, well, let's just praise 'em for the good ones!

I don't think that Iron Wolf was as bad as you guys say. It is smooth in comparison to some Arrows that I know of, but anyhow. I think that the B:TR and company are getting rough in the back seat. Kinda whips through the inversions. I love the front on the other hand, it delivers an outstandingly smooth ride for its age.

I personally wasn't much for the two Vortex coasters. Iron Wolf is a good ride, better than Vortex, even though it is the first B&M. I do not know why everyone bashes Mantis. I thouhgt that it was a fun, smooth ride. My favorite B&Ms are Apollo's Chariot, Nitro, Alpengeist, Incredible Hulk, Raging Bull, Montu, and Kraken.

i also thought that but i love that ride now!! its # 3 on my top 10 coasters (i donno y i rode 1st, 2nd (2 times), and last)

Well said...I could not agree any more. Someone should squash that bug.

Of the ones ive been on it would have to be Kumba
But really it is a great ride especially since it was made in the early 90's. But i just overestimated it and thats my fault and I didnt really see it as the best thing out there. But I think all B&M are good and really fun, but if i had to pick id say Kumba.

Batman KNight Flight; a pathetic waste of 4200 ft of sacred B&M track. it does a whole lot . . . of nothing, no really intense moments, all the forces seem to balance out and u never really get any great floating sensations, except for maybe the first loop but in B&Ms thats a given.

I can't say I've ever ridden a bad B&M, but if I had to choose one I would say the Georgia Scorcher. Smooth ride, but too short and not very intense. I expected something wilder than Mantis, since GS was built after Mantis. Still a great ride though; I would wait in line for GS over an Arrow or Vekoma ride anyday.

I think that it is Iron Wolf. I really don't think that Batman: The Ride is that bad, yeah I mean they are cloned but at least they are very smooth, and they are still B&M so it couldn't be that awful!
