I like the idea of a place to post rare and unusual pics, but how bout putting them all in one post instead of spreading it out over 3 posts?

cause he can only attach one file at a time. if u think he's trying to raise is post count, i doubt it, usually once u get that high u don't care about your post count.

Pretty cool. Was Rattler modified? It seems like that drop looks absolutely insane!

Chip
02-25-2003, 10:03 PM
Rattler was modified. It used to have a 170 foot drop which is insanely long for a woodie! But they modified it and retracked some parts because it was so shaky it was hurting people.

musicfreak
02-25-2003, 10:21 PM
Yeah, the drop on the Rattler was right about 170ft., now it's like 124ft. Man I wish I got to ride it in its glory days. It still looks like one heck of a coaster. I have a few of Top Gun: The Jet Coaster at PC that I will put up soon as I scan them.

Hmm. I'm sure that if you want to see some REALLY rare and unusual coasters, you can look at any one of Roomraider's threads. Most of them are from Japan, and are absolutely insane. Like Vanish. Thats a cool looking ride.

I have some old coaster pics of when SFA was Adventure World, and I might post them when I get access to a scanner. Nice pic of Rattler btw.

Anybody interested in seeing photos of Knott's defunct Windjammer Surf Racers actually racing? I took a whole bunch back in the summer of '97 when it was still working as supposed to. I don't think there are any photos of that ride where both tracks are in action on the web.

Where's a scanner when you need one?! I have a picture here of a water slide at Action Park in New Jersey that had a loop in it. That whole park is defunct now, but that was one crazy waterslide. They had a little door on the top side of the slide right before the loop incase you didn't make it all the way over.

SFGadvKing
02-26-2003, 07:25 PM
the water park is not defunct. its called mountain creek and is not far from me. here is a pic from another thread talking about the water slide:

musicfreak
02-26-2003, 07:52 PM
Well, defunct by my standards. About the only thing in common those two parks have is that they sit on the same plot of land.

ride6
02-26-2003, 08:44 PM
I think it's rare because of the angle. It's hard to get one that cramms that much track into one shot. I have a cool one of ROAR! @ SFA, I don't know if its rare so I'll try to get it up here soon.

G-Farce
02-26-2003, 10:04 PM
I wouldn't call Roar @ SFA rare, some old pics of Wildone would be pretty sweet though...back before they built up the turnaround.

I have got to get a scanner!! I just found some old pictures my neighbor has of the very first Schwartzkopf shuttle coaster located at Paramount's Carowinds. Of course it isn't there anymore, it was taken out in the 80's. But when I get a scanner I will show all! In the picture, it was located where the waterpark is now, right about where the wave pool is.

Here's a cool pic of Millennium Force's pull through when they were testing for clearances. Gives you an idea of how they test most coasters to make sure you really can hold your hands out in almost any direction throught the ride and still be completly safe...

Yes there is always this debate about this inversion or not . Diseny call that an inversion but it looks like a sharp turn . Inisde the ride I didnt feel it as an inversion, it was just kind of inense turn , so I always say that this ride got 2.5 inversions.

well in the other coaster pics thing i put my RB lighting pic from 1972...
thats the only "very" rare pic i hvae... but this is at the train station at RB....

this is a little "rare" its Yankee Cannonball (my #1 fav coaster:)) in the snow..its rare cause its from the off season..i was right next to the ride..and in a spot you cant go..when the park is open....:D

Skye
03-02-2003, 02:53 PM
the lightning pic is interesting, shame about the quality though. Those 20's/30's coaster all seem to have a repeating theme about the layout - steep swooping drop to the right followed by a steep climb backs towards the lift before going swooping left into helix's. Kinda mirrors the pattern in the 90's/00's with the kumba designs.

James
03-02-2003, 03:01 PM
lighting was a ** Cyclone colne..like 5 or 6 of them were made...:)

I think if SF can call the turn on Mind Bender at SFOG a loop, then Disney is safe claiming that this is a loop. ;)

drachen fires cutback isn't much steeper, so i think it is an inversion. f feels like one.

Since six Flags America isn't open right now I cant drive down there and get this pic but I heard there was a place you could stand somewere inside the park boundries so that you could get a picture that showed at least part of every coaster in the park...

Does anyone have this picture post it!!! and if anyone knows of this tell were you have to be to take this picture I'm real curious about this..

Andrew W
03-05-2003, 12:45 AM
I'm pretty sure Sam Marks took that picture back when Superman was underconstruction. As you're approaching the park from the east, there is a field on your left about a 1/2 a mile from the turn into the park. If you stand along the road next to that field I believe thats where you can get the desiered pic. Granted you won't see the kiddie coaster, you can get every other coaster in the pic.

James
03-05-2003, 07:40 AM
yeah i took a pic from there..cause we were goig to the park fromn VA in we went my it and i looked and you could see batwing and parts of SROS and roar sticking up..and i think ToD..but i dont think iu got 2FTFS in the pic...

I'd believe that you could get every SFA coaster in one pic. They're arranged in a way that allows it. At first I thought you were talking about SFGAmer. and I was like woah! Could that be done? The coasters there would be EXTREAMLY hard to get in one pic. without an impressive panoramic camera.

isnt there a point like that on dueling dragons where you can see every inversion through the dragons mouth? Something like that..was this just a rumor?

G-Farce
03-06-2003, 12:12 AM
Yeah...right at the mouth opening of the statues. They designed it that way. You can't see every inversion...its all three times the trains miss each other.

Skye, stop bumping the thread. If people find pictures that are rare, they will post them. Could you give sources where you found some of those pictures, too? You said a page has lots of graphics on it, but I don't see the page you're referring to.

Also, what is up with that Space Mountain Paris layout and where did you get it? Why isn't it complete? The person get lazy or what?

Skye
03-16-2003, 03:36 PM
Its better than all those mindless SF threads, and people post more the bigger a thread is, and are more likely to post pics cause they think its more worth it. Most pics i have collected over years and have them lying around the HD. The page before i meant had a lot of pics it was loading slowly for me. The smp layout i just found somewhere. I don't know why they didn't finish it.

Skye
07-18-2003, 07:28 PM
Keeping addind pics! This thread is going to dissappear otherwise. i have more but on an old computer so can't get to them right now. i will though.

EDIT: i'll make this post more useful.

sources:

previous page, some are from some danimation thread somewhere. probably old now.

SMP from www.dlptoday.com i think, or a related site.

Most of the others i have just collected slowly. That rattler pic i have had for about 3 years. no idea where from though - i think its in a book somewhere (that waterslide is btw, but you probably knew that)

I believe that White Lightnin' was actually the 2nd shuttle looper, but it was only like a month later it was built.

This is a VERY rare picture I found on Ebay. This aerial photo of the old ROCKET roller coaster at PLAYLAND PARK in San Antonio, Texas was taken out in 1977. The coaster was built in 1947 and the park closed in 1980. The coaster was dismantled and rebuilt at Knoebel’s Amusement Park, Elysburg, PA in 1985 where it still thrills riders to this very day. It has become the famous PHOENIX, known to as a world class coaster to all wooden coaster enthusiasts.

Here is the coaster on RCDB, but there's no pictures there.

its nice people keep this going but there is already a thread for "normal" pics. I started this so we would get to see pics people aren't usually interested in or are hidden away on a hard drive somewhere. just look at the pics at the begining. How many pics inside SMP do you see? Or a looping water slide? (altough that one does round occasionally cause its in a book). I just don't want this merged with another thread. should i have written that? I might give the mods ideas. oh well i'll risk.

Here is an Airal Veiw of Glen Echo(my father's childhood park) circa 1960. It does not do the ravine drops of teh Coaster dips ANY justice though, with the double dip being almost 100 ft, and the drop after the turnaround being the same height.

On a side note about this coaster, I finally got to see some on-ride footage of it a couple of weeks ago. My dad didn't remember much of the ride other then being scared out of his mind by the ravine drops, and my dads best friend I questioned about the coaster said he had his eyes shut the whole time. I assumed this to be just their newbness to coasters at the time, but after seeing the speed that it hit the drops and turns, which were very traditional, straight drops and flat turns, I could see why someone would be scared. The footage of the second half of the ride was taken from the back of the train, and I saw every passenger of the about half full train shoot up into the buzzbar numerous times, and they were falling all over each other in the turns. Good stuff!

I have some more pretty rare pics, and some from Chippewa lake that will be interesting...gotta find them though.

whatever you think, but it should be different enough from the ride pics thread. I started this because i had an archive with all these pics in.

what i'd like to see:

Big bad wolf layout (never seen this)
LHM layout (only ever see the loops - whats the rest of it?)

Anything that its difficult to get a picture of!!

bk2004
01-18-2004, 10:39 PM
Sky- here are some pictures of Bat, with a layout. Also, BBW's layout. I had to do some digging, but I found it, just for you! Also, LHM- whats that stand for- Lock NESS Monsters? Miss-spelled or something? Heres my verions of LNM, not a very good one, but ill try to help! :)

First, you turn left out of the station, only to turn right back around to the right to climb the lift. Once at the top, you turn right and drop (max speed-60mph!) then you go up a hill and do another turn around, then drop back again, and do the first loop. Then from there you go back up another hill and go into a tunnel- pitch black- and its LONG, a min i think (counted it!) All it does it a continuous helix. Then you come out of that and go into the second lift. At the top, tun right again, then drop into the second loop (interlocking) and then pop right back up into the staion.

bk2004
01-20-2004, 04:30 PM
Heres another picture of the rattler before the drop was pulled up 64ft feetm thus lost its record breaking title. :(

Haha. Storage. It was actually melted down and sold as scrap metal! How could that be, you ask. It was rough. People complained of roughness like it was going out of style. It probably had low ridership toward the end of its life. All that lead to its demise.

I agree, the ride looks sweet and even smooth, but I guess it was not. Also, this ride does look a little different than the loop & corkscrews of the Arrow's coasters. BTW- was this arrows first cobra roll?

well i say storage cause wasn't it sitting away in storage for years while they were trying to sell it?? maybe i just heard wrong.

How could it of been in storage for years when they just took it down in 2002. Thats less that 2 years. And Chip is right, it was recycled since know one bought it.

Read it here under the History category:

I think they made a number of the Boomerangs, but I'm not completely sure about that.

Really, I think that they didnt have many. There famous inversion are the loop, batwing, and of course the corkscrew. I havent seen any other coaster that has a Boomerang in it except Drachen Fire, but of course thats not in exenstense anymore. Does anybody know of any Arrow Coasters that have a boomerang in them?

Um, Drachen Fire was @ BGW, not SFA.

I can guarentee Drachen Fire had the first, and only, cobra roll for Arrow.

Haha, very true statement, it's sad how some people think they're right, but in reality are so off.

Didn't they have someone threaten to sue the park as well, and that's another reason they closed it?

I couldn't believe people said it was rough, I've been on coasters a lot rougher than Drachenfire.

I rode drachen fire in it's last year of operation and believe me it was REALLY rough, I mean rough beyond belief. My ears were begging for mercy by the end of that ride. Not quite as rough as the old outer limits pre-lap bar trains, but still incredibly rough.

I always held my head to one side, and it wasn't that bad. Yeah I agree, wasn't as bad as the old restraints on FoF.

What a shame. The coaster was unique, had a great layout, and was in a good spot and park. The lanscaping around it was awesome. It was a shame to watch it go.

Heres a link to some rare pics of Opryland.

When the park was a happy place opened.
When it was a sad place being demolished.
And finally, the stupid mall that took it's place.

When did FoF get lap bars? I thought that they always had them, maybe the rattling jogged it out of my brain. I rode it last summer, and thought that it had always had lap bars.

Wow, I had no idea that Ninja was not a brand new roller coaster. Thanks SFOG Freak! BTW- I love those trains in the last pic way better than the ones that are @ SFOG now!

Here's 2 more pictures of White Lighnin that used to be at Carowinds. These 2 pictures are more closer to the track/trains.
