View Full Version : Coasters Changing Color?

The thread about Python's paint job, and thinking about color schemes of other coasters, got me to wonder if there are coasters out there that have completely changed color over the years. Since I'm very big on the photographs I personally take of the coasters I ride, changing the color scheme would really irritate me... But then again, it might just give me an excuse to go back, too. :D

I know that the Blue Streak at Cedar Point has done this; it used to be just natural wood, then in later years was colorized to the light blue / darker blue scheme we know today. At Wild Adventures (Valdosta, GA), I'd swear that Hangman (an SLC) has changed colors -- it's orange now, and I swear it was pink some years ago. Can anyone verify this or else come up with other examples? And I don't mean coasters whose paint fades, or rust, or something like that, but that they are repainted differently from their original coloration.

Shockwave at SFOT twice-

Originally white
Changed to red and blue
changed again to blue and green

Also, excalibur at SFAW back in the day
originally all white
later, red and brown

I'm sure that several rides have been repainted as they moved from park to park. The most dramatic one from a stationary ride that I can think of was at SFOG. When they installed BTR, the color scheme of Mind Bender went from brown ( http://www.rcdb.com/installationgallery37.htm?Picture=7 ) to lime green ( http://www.rcdb.com/installationgallery37.htm?Picture=5 ) to got more with the Riddler theme, although the name was never officially changed. Lots of people actually think that Mind Bender is now Riddler because of the new colors and the question marks all over the place.

Also, Melissa, for some reason I do think that Hang Man used to be pinkish, but maybe it's just because a lot of the other SLCs are pinkish. (Ex. Mind Eraser at SFDL: http://www.rcdb.com/installationgallery430.htm?Picture=3 )

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I believe that the backs of the employee tee shirts of the people that worked on Mind Bender said The Riddler, but the sign over the entrance still read Mind Bender.

Lots of coasters have had complete color changes. These are the only ones that I can think of off the top of my head:

Anaconda @ PKD - black/orange/green to orange/yellow/green
Shockwave @ PKD - black/yellow to blue/green/orange
Top Gun @ PKI - red to gray
Shockwave @ SFMM & SFGAD/B:TE @ SFAW - black to blue to white
Mindbender @ SFOG - red to green
Shockwave @ SFOT - white to red/blue to blue/green
Tidal Wave @ SFGAM/Viper @ SFOG - blue to yellow

Jeez! What's with coasters named Shockwave and getting repainted!?

Chang got painted to Medusa's color scheme. Yuck! I mean they are cool colors, but Chang was so original being bright yellow and all. Ah well, what can you do.

MINDBENDER NEVER CHANGED NAMES! Sorry.

It actually went through three color schemes:

Opening: Silver w/ silver trains
Mid 80s to 96: Brown w/ brown trains
96 to present: Green w/ black trains

I believe this year, WildCat (CP) got painted some different and interesting colors. And kind of on the subject, why did the tunnel on WWL get removed? I know it has been a couple years, but it just takes away from the ride NOT to have it.

True, I forgot about Wildcat being repainted (purple is one of the new colors on it now) and I even watched it happen...

To answer your question about White Water Landing, CedarPoint_Mark, the reason the tunnel was removed was that it was decaying and collapsing, so the rest of it was removed as a safety issue. Plus, it allows the operators to better see the course of the ride and watch for guest misbehavior.

the only person who has their own avatar besides the staff is the god of the forum.

Runaway Reptar at PGA was painted orange after beinng blue for a long time. Also, Turn of the Century was painted black, added two loops and became the Demon at PGA (I'd asume the same for SFGAm).

Laser at Dorney Park was originally red & white:

but was changed to it's current color scheme a couple years ago:

Cyclone at Paramount's Carowinds used to be a blue green color with red trains, it is now a dark purple with yellow and teal trains.

Coasters aren't the only things that get new paint jobs. Drop Zone at PGA was painted just recently, I do believe.

Heh, I like musicfreak's icon, although I have a feeling it was refering to an inside joke that I missed.

Anyway, another recent example that I believe has not been mentioned is Boomerang at KBF.

Don't forget that Scooby doo's ghoster coaster @ PKD also has been repainted.

It had a nice forest green paint job when it was originallly built in 75 but had been repainted orange/yellow,then back in 2000 it was repainted again this time in blue.

Man PKD just doesn't seem to have a nack for painting their rides well, whoever did Shockwave's god awful paintjob oughtta be taken out back & put out of their misery.

All of those color changes make the ride look so much better than they did before. Can anyone think of a bad color change?

Sure . . .

Shockwave before in blue

Yep that is definitely a bad color change. The only coaster that can be painted white and look good is a wooden coaster. All white steel coasters look bad.

I think Alpengeist is the only exception. Although it does have a hint of some other colors.

someone should paint one in that paint that changes colour in the sun, like purple/blue and yellow/green. It would look different in the morning than in the daytime and gradually would change.

BimmerZ3
04-02-2003, 09:07 PM
That would be really awesome, but it would probably be way too expensive.

He's right it wasn't much of a change. It went from all chipped up white paint to shiny new white paint.

Chang looks a little better (IMO, and only from pic.s) in th newer pic.s.

Hershey's sooperdooperLooper was originally painted white (more likely than not to look like the Great American Revolution). It was painted blue sometime before 1992, because I always remember it being blue when I was there.

Don't forget Gambit; now known as B:TR @ SFNO. That, I believe had a blue color scheme.

Boomerang @ KBF was originally painted blue, and since been replaced with a rather ugly, in my opinion, neon color scheme.

That's all I can think of off hand.

Byron

Gambit had a BTR type color scheme....I think it was all Black

James

SFNO changed the colors on gambit... it was al black and not it has yellow rails..

Bobbejaanland's Looping Star changes colors about every two years. SFH's Superman was purple and green first. ;) SFB's Turbine was completely yellow (http://www.rcdb.com/installationgallery921.htm?Picture=1) at first, but is now mainly green (http://www.rcdb.com/installationgallery921.htm?Picture=6). :)

Carowinds 73-03

Carolina Cyclone @ Carowinds has also changed colors 3 times.
Green & Yellow when it opened Then Teal And now it's purple.
But if you haven't noticed the trains are still green & yellow. Whats up with that. Coulden't afford to paint as well?

Alpie's supports are blue,not green.

The supports are the same color used on B:TR at SFOT,unless they repainted them recently.

Hey! I've been gone for quite a while - but I finally got on a computer and came here first. I saw this and, well, here goes...

Was not the Magnum at CP RED when it first opened? Now it's ORANGE.

Also, The Racer at PKI, was red, white & blue - now it's only white. The Beastie at PKI, once known as the Scooby Doo, was yellow - now it's purple.

And the Wolf Bobs - or whatever they call it - at Six Flags Ohio used to be all natural, like the Blue Streak at CP. The BS is now blue (2 transformations as Melissa said) and the Wolf Bobs is white, at least it was when I saw it a couple of years ago.

Also, it would be interesting to know about color changes of some of the trains. That could open a BIG can of worms, but, nonetheless, could be interesting

Magnum XL-200 has always been red...

That's unless all that weathering has diluted it into something other than that...

RaptorXLC
04-05-2003, 08:12 PM
Magnum does seem to have been repainted orange, but it is only the weathering. Technically it is red, but it hasn't been painted in a while.

A while??? Thats an understatement! when I rode it a couple of years ago I did look orange. I couldn't believe some of the old coaster specials when I watched them. I was like "WOW Magnum REALLY was RED at one time. Amazing, it almost looks like Steel Force or Mamba by the color. Cool."

Steven
04-08-2003, 08:27 PM
Magnum's color is fading. Most of it now looks orange, but if you look in the station at the tracks, you will see that it is still red. When I worked on Magnum, I looked up from underneath the station and could easily tell that it was red (but you can't see since it's a restricted area). I think the Morgan Hypers of Mamba and Steel Force used a darker pigment of red. Steel Force looked like it was fading a little (to almost a dark pinkish color).

Kyle L

A few close by to me are, Greezed Lightnin changed its color to a more neonish green and blue. Kong went from ugly brown/rustic orange track to bright orange and silver rails, with brown supports.

This is not a coaster nor has it recived a paint job yet but in 07 drop zone @ carowinds will be pinted yellow & Neon green. I heard this on a rumor page on an unofficial carowinds site. does anyone know more about this.

The teal that they had for a season was the primer for the dark purple they have now. And the coaster trains used to be red, now they are green and yellow. I think www.rcdb.com has a photo of the red trains.

As for Drop Zone getting painted in 2007...haven't heard anything like this yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did happen. That whole area will be better themed to "Thrill Zone" than it is now, although called "Thrill Zone" it is very "Wayne's World". That is their 35th anniversary, so look for something good added to that section of the park as well...

Anyway, just thought I would clear that up. Back to more coasters changing colors! Mantis was just painted from what I hear, but does anyone know if the colors are the same, or have they changed? Also, I know it's real expensive, but it would be sweet to see a coaster painted with the paint that has 7 different colors to it depending on the light and where you are standing while looking at it.

I would like to see a coaster painted with that color changing paint that they use on cars, but i heard its like $400 a pint, dont think its going to happen any time soon.

I believe the Carolina Cyclone at Paramount Carowinds got painted recently to a purplish color. It used to be sky blue when i visited in 1999.
