Who cares, Thunderhead is the best.

Hercules was best. Mean streak is my favorite existing one.

honorable mention.
Wildcat and lightning racer.

BOSS looks to be the 'best monster' woodie.. TXG looks cool too..
Of the ones I have been on I gues.. MeanStreak.,.. But I hope BOSS replaces it ;)

The Beast, Lightning Racer, and the Raven are supposedly some of the best. I've never ridden a 'monster' woodie, unless you count Gwazi one.

The Beast is without a doubt my favorite "monster wood coaster." All others I've been on sucked.

I've been on all the monsters in Ohio and each had their own great characteristics. I think that the one that did the most for me though was Son of Beast. I rode it in 2000/2001 (can't remember) and I loved it. The Beast comes in a close second, being tail-gated by Mean Streak.

RamblinWreck
03-10-2005, 07:53 PM
If it comes down to rides like the Beast, MS, Texas Giant, Hercules etc, the Beast wins.

Though I am not sure what exactly constitutes a coaster as a "monster", my vote would have to go to the Beast. All of the other so-called "monsters" (ie. Mean Streak, SoB, etc.) have not been very kind to me.

The Boss. Period.

mean streak was a freaking boring coaster

i loved texas giant (inspite of its super roughness and hard brake on the midcourse) and timberwolf is a great classic

i dont think it qualifies, but ozark wildcat is amazing

Once it was determined what is a "monster". Thunderhead is no "monster" compared to the others listed, at a mere 100 feet and 55mph.

Does Beastie count as a monster coaster? :D

I will go with the Beast although Ghostrider is my favorite woody. (see my signature below.)

Is the Rattler considered a "monster wooden coaster"? If so, It gets my vote. The triple heliux is crazy.

SheiKra
03-10-2005, 10:28 PM
If Shivering Timbers doesn't qualify as a MONSTER coaster, I dont know what does. But It gets my vote for having 3 hills over 100 ft tall, and for its great length.

Jimmy B

With a great first drop, other nice drops, the double helix, and that spectacular "magic carpet" cap-off, my vote belongs to the Texas Giant at SFoT also known as "America's Coaster!"

Once again my vote goes to The Beast.

That will pretty much be my vote for any wooden coaster poll.

The Beast. At least as it was. If these trims they installed have raped it into another Mean Streak, my next trip to PKI will be the last one.

A new monster woodie Hades is likely to be the best woodie in the world monster or not!

Riddler156

The best monster woodie and the best of all wooden coasters is the Beast.

WildMouse
03-11-2005, 08:02 AM
Thank God, park owners have finally realized that bigger is not always better in the wood coaster category. Of the 5 woodies considered in this category, the original Texas Giant was the best.

I've talked to people that have ridden the original Beast (before the ending helix was covered and banked) with the 4 bench PTC trains, and they all say it was incredible.

mean streak was broken when I was there :( but we're going again this year! The Thunderbolt is also a good woodie although it's not huge.. just because of the drops into the ravine

The Beast ownz.

The Beat hands down. The woods is what makes it really good. Not knowing where your going to go next and all of those tunnels.

03-11-2005, 01:39 PM
The Beast for me also, and I rode it the first year it opened. Even though it's not quite as "Beastly" as it was back in the day, it's still a Beast, the King of the Wooden Coaster Jungle"!!

J/K :) That would have been awesome to ride it back then. I didn't ride it until it was 20 years old. lol

Your're right. I have heard that my old days posts are pretty, well, old, and boring. Guess even talking about the Beast is old and boring.

Geez, I feel like I can't post about anything on TN anymore!! Can't talk about the bands I've seen, can't talk about anything anymore without being accused of being old!!!

I guess I just shouldn't post anymore!! You young people are really mean at times!!

American Eagle, I think it's a great ride except for the trim brakes before and after the 540 helix.

... I love hearing about the old days.

Ouch!

As far as "monster wood coasters" I would have to go with Beast followed by SOB. However, in my opinion, size of the woodie does not dictate the best ride :)

Smaller wood coasters seem to offer incredible experiences with more unique elements. IMO

As far as Mean Streak, I think it needs a wrecking ball. That thing was a joke.

LuvChyld79
03-12-2005, 12:20 PM
I agree. Mean Streak just isn't that mean.

Three years ago I woulda said the Beast, but I went out the halloween before last to ride it, and found it full of trim brakes, as well as being fully lit at night. What happened?

So I guess I'll say the Boss, if I can't include the Legend. Although if I had ridden Shivering Timbers, my vote might be going to that ride.

socalMAN123
03-12-2005, 01:45 PM
What if I have only been on two, Ghostrider and Colosuss? I would have to say tehy are both pretty good, but Ghostrider is a little bit better just because its more smooth.

Indeed. I need to get back up to Michigans Adventure some time. I should get some friends together this summer and give it a shot. Haven't been up there in a new years so my once clear and happy memories of Shivering Timbers have blurred to something far less clear, but still very happy. :p

I'm just waiting for the Intamin Hyper or B&M Invert to apear up there to give me a real excuse to go.

Colossus at Heide Park in Germany. It's one of the best rollercoasters I've ever been on.

03-13-2005, 11:49 AM
Riverside Cyclone
I wouldnt call that a "Moster woodie"
But riverside cyclone is GREAT ride. SF killed the coaster but its still great. If they fixxed it up and put the first drop back it really would be a World Class Coaster.

They need to stop fixing it!

4 Beast

I'm also looking forward to Hades.

I want to ride that. It looks so good, and it even looks smooth with those prefab track pieces. I love.

If Timbers or Boss applies, 1. Timbers 2. Boss, but I can't deny Mean Streak.

Definitely Texas Giant. It is sooooo breathaking. It's the best woodie I've been on. I don't know if I've ever been on any other monster ones. If the Arkansas Twister is one, it's second. I think those are the only two woodies I've been on.

Thunderhead comes in first with Rampage second.
The beast comes in third.
obviously if you have never ridden these you need to.

Does the Rattler count? I know it has been tamed, but what about when it first came out? I heard it was pretty intense before they cut the height down.

Hades is by far my favorite "monster" wooden coaster.

w00dland
05-31-2005, 04:59 PM
From what I've ridden Hades wins hands down. Destroys American Eagle and makes the Boss go into his corner and cry.

SFSTLboi
05-31-2005, 09:58 PM
Hades does look extreme, but would it be as extreme if it didn't have any tunnel? Never been on it and not many pictures.

Coasterholica
06-02-2005, 12:18 PM
The only 'monster' wooden coaster I've ridden is Colossos at Heide Park. I Didn't think it was anything particularly special though, especially the second half of the ride after the turn-around. Give me 'smaller' woodies like Tonnerre de Zeus/Balder/Megafobia anyday! Much more fun.

VF76
06-02-2005, 01:51 PM
The Boss is the most under rated wood in the country. I would rank it right behind g. rider.
Hades is a great ride, but I would be surprised to see it #1 on anyones list.

SFSTLboi
06-02-2005, 02:18 PM
VF76, is Ghostrider #1 on your list? I agree that the Boss is under rated because not many people know about it and too many people say that it needs new cars because the cars on it now hurt them. They never hurt me. The Boss is just purely insane and FUN!

I agree that it is way underrated and that is the best woody I have ever rode! Then again, I haven't been on too many woodys. Still The Boss never hurts me, but maybe thats just because I have a high pain tolerance.

SFSTLboi
06-02-2005, 02:27 PM
I like how it goes everywhere and everything is just a blur! Never once has the Boss hurt me. It messes up my hair eveytime too!

jimths08
06-02-2005, 02:40 PM
The Boss never hurts me intentionally but it me and my buddy always have our hands up the whole time and try to elbow each other in the ribs. We end up with lots of brusies but its not because of the ride itself.

I haven't ridden it but I think Son Of Beast has got to be awesome. Over 200 feet in the air and 78 mph. WOW.

Riddler156
06-02-2005, 02:56 PM
^A lot of people don't like SoB because it's pretty rough, and the loop is the only non-"painful" part of the ride. I think it's a great coaster, though.

jimths08
06-02-2005, 03:02 PM
IMO roughness makes a woodie. There supposed to feel out of control. If your 45, have arthritis, and are a regular at theme parks, maybe you should rethink your territory.

VF76
06-03-2005, 02:40 PM
Yes, Ghost rider is my #1 wood. I rode The Boss 3 yrs. ago and did'nt get beat up.
Even Ghost rider seemed a little rough in Jan. 05 than it did 3 or 4 years ago.
S.O.B. is too rough for me. I'am 6'4 so my knees take a beating. The cars seem smaller too.

I've only been American Eagle, Boss, Villian and Mean Streak in what I guess would be "monster" woodies.

In order, I'd say either American Eagle or Boss would be #1. It's hard for me to say since I've only been on The Boss once. Then it would be The Villian and Mean Streak last.

I'll be also riding Hades, The Beast and Son of Beast later this year in July. So I'll see where those coasters fit in.
