View Full Version : What is the most disapointing coaster?

Have you ever been on a rollercoaster for the first time and it looks so good but turns out to be horrible?
What where they we want to know.

Exclude that it was way too bumpy

Big Bad Wolf. I saw friends with Big Bad Wolf T-shirts, I saw a video of it on the Discovery Channel, etc, and it looked awesome! How cool is it to narrowly avoid hitting buildings and then skim over the Rhine River? The problem: You don't come ANYWHERE near the buildings OR the river, the ride is rough, and it's REALLY slow. Very dissapointing, but nonetheless still not a terrible ride.

Magnum XL-200...Billed as "the greatest ride ever!"

Huh? Slow, rough...
not at all a bad ride, but with all the hype surrounding it, I thought it would be MUCH better. Dissapointing...

Superman Ultimate Escape. That ride looks awsome looking strait down that high. I heard people making fun of the ride and then a guy yeld out that it was a good ride. Turns out those people were right that rollercoaster stunk. I can't believe they are making clones of it. (V2 Verticle Velocity)

Mean Streak. I'd heard good and bad things about this ride, and it LOOKED awesome. It was only moderately rough in my opinion, but it was heavily braked and slow. There was about one good drop, and the first drop was boring for a 150'+ drop.

The Jaguar at Knott's Berry Farm is so average, it's laughable. Tame doesn't begin to describe it.

However, the Ghostrider is fan-tas-tic.

i found that thunderhawk at dorney is the most underrated ride. The thing is awesome in the front. You hit the lap bar so hard of the hill going up into the turnaround that you stay there for 2 seconds. there is so much air and it really is smooth in the front.

Raptor at Cedar Point. Before my trip I had heard so many things about this roller coaster. I was expecting something great. Of the 5 inverteds I have been on, I easily rank it dead last. I opted to ride Mean Streak twice rather than riding Raptor again.

Would have to be Mantis. I dont know why, maybe its because I had to go to the bathroom the whole time I was in line(2 hour wait)and while I was on the ride. My God it sucked. I probably could have enjoyed it more if I wasn't worried about peeing in my pants.

Dueling Dragons (IOA).

Okay, the Queue was great. The coasters were mediocre at best. They are too fast paced... you are thrown through one element, and before you can comprehend that you are thrown into another. The very nature of an inverted coaster is that the good view is in the front seat, all other seats you are limited to seeing the back of the seat in front of you. Because of this, the dueling aspect is lost on all but the first seat. As a dueling coaster, they fail badly. As inverted coasters they pale in comparrison to BGT's wonderful Montu.

The Queue themeing may be great, but to me it did not hide an avergage (at best) coaster design.

Mean Streak the first time I rode it. Waited about an hour..so hyped for it..and a total let down. It has YET to impress me.

But even more of a let down: Son Of Beast.

Maybe it was the ONE train operation.
Maybe it was the ONE hour wait.
Maybe it was the lack of theming in the NON-shaded que line.
Maybe it was the butt ugly cars.
Maybe it was the EXTREME roughness in the helixes.

Or maybe the ride just s**ks!

i think that alpengeist at BGW was the most disappointing ride ever. The first hill is just horrible, and the Gs on the cobra roll are almost unbearable. It wasn't even the best ride at the park at the time (Drachen Fire was much better). It was fun, but very disappointing. Oh and another note, the mean streak was my favorite wooden ride before they put the breaks in at the top of the lift hill. They really take away the first drop.

First, I think a disappointed coaster should not be a bad coaster itself. But it gives you the impression that it's so great before you ride it. After you ride it, it's not close to what you anticipated.

For mine, it's Kraken, in Sea World Florida.

Before I ride it, I hope that it will be a Kumba beater. But after riding it, I am really disappointed that B&M failed to deliver a coaster better than Kumba after 7 years.

Reasons:
1. Bad theming: rusted steel I-beams for trench wall? plain station? bare concrete and gravel land? What I saw is not a Busch-like quality theming, what I saw is what Six Flags and Paramount do!
2. Bad layout: out-and-back is really a bad idea for a multilooper. It's not as disorienting as Kumba, just count how many time during the ride has Kumba changes the direction?
3. Where's the B&M roar: Kraken is really a silent coaster, but that takes away some of the thrill.

However there are 3 good things about Kraken:
1. Finally, some decent airtime in Orlando: Kraken has straight drops for first drop and after mid-course brake.
2. The best corkscrew ever!
3. Ultra smooth!

So, Kraken is currently my #4 coaster, behind Kumba (#3) and Hulk (#2).

I will bet everyone will disagree with me but I thought Millennium Force was really disappointing. I thought that big hill would be kewl but it turns out I felt NOTHING going down, its too gradual, you gradualy go to 80 degrees and by the time you are 80 degrees fully, your already leveling out!!! And the rest of it s**ked I felt no airtime on it at all. And I was also disappointed with Mean Streak and Magnum XL 200.

I would say Superman at SFMM. I feel no airtime at the top and the only good thing is the acceleration.

Also Riddler's Revenge was a great ride after the first time I rode it, but it has lost a lot of intensity in my books and I don't care if I go to SFMM and don't ride it.

Not the worst coaster, just disappointing. I would have to say Thunderbolt at Kennywood disappointed me. I received so much Hype from people that rode it to the point where I was under the impression it was the BEST WOODIE of all time, well I was let down. The best part of the ride in my opinion was the last drop, right before going back into the station. Truth is, I liked the ROAR at SFA far better, and it is an understated woodie within the eyes of BEAST and SHIVERING TIMBERS, among others.

I would have to say the Hulk. I'm thinking wow! launched into a corkscrew then go into a cobra roll...how awesome is that gonna be! Then I rode it and was like...that's a launch!!! B&M could take some hints from S&S when they try and do that again. I was just expecting so much more at the beginning. The end was pretty fun though.

Most disappointing experience on a coaster... has to be Vortex at King's Island. In '98, I decided to take a trip to Mecca... Ohio. Up to that point, I'd only seen pictures of PKI and CP, and both places looked great. Coming from Minnesota (where the only looper we have is the generic corkscrew) I thought a multi-looper would be the BEST. And so, I thought that Vortex looked great...

Unfortunately, when I got to ride it, I was underwhelmed. I'd already ridden Mantis, Magnum, Raptor, Power Tower, and the others at CP, and Vortex just didn't hold a candle. It only got worse once I got to ride Beast and Flight of Fear (yes, the headache took 1 hour to go away, but I still loved the ride).

Now, I've soured on the multi-loopers, and actually dread riding on them... Shockwave at SFGA? Rough, boring. Viper at SFMM? Ugh, my head hurt before the 2nd loop!

Gimme 'dem smooth B&M Inverteds any day.

How can Nevis possibly say that about MF?!?!?! Air time isn't everything. In fact this ride isn't designed to give airtime at all. This ride is about height, speed and POSITIVE G's. And it delievers more than enough of each.

Just look back once your 400ft in the air, its unbelievable! And I cannot believe your complaing about the lack of airtime!!!! Bring something that weighs between 1 and 3 pounds and let go of it when your at the top. It will float just like your in space!! This is the only ride that will give you that experience for 6 seconds. I completly agree that Thunderbolt and all of Kennywood is OVERRATED!!!!!

It's the Rattler for me. People said it was better than the Texas Cyclone (I heven't been to many parks. Just SFFT & SFAW, and Disneyland) I got on it after witing almost an hour. Then after the first drop, we went upthe secand hill and down agoing, which was fine, but then ,along comes a Helix. It was waaaay too slow. We kinda went in a cicle and went down. Really stupid.
That was REAL mature. For those that haven't been following this little saga, he can't seem to understand that someone might not care for 'his' coaster (Wanna guess which one?). You want to talk disappointing? A picture ofStealth is in the dictionary for the word. I was so hyped to ride it because of the 'rave reviews' and its unique passenger seating. But it turned out that it was a very short ride (Yes I know it was the prototype), pulled too much Gs in specific places (Vertical Loop), and there were too many restraints all over the place and all of my weight was against it during the ride so it wasn't too comfortable either. I actually liked the park's Invertigo better.

Looking into Dr. Insanity's crystal ball, I predict people will be disappointed with X, the Arrow "Fourth Dimension" coaster going up at SFMM. It looks like the sort of ride that is more of a gimmick than anything else. Does anyone really want to ride a coaster with spin-and-spew seats? Of course I'm hoping that I'm wrong, and Arrow pulls off a great ride.

OK. Now this may stir up some gossip, but let me explain before I say the ride's name. Now this ride was my favorite wooden coaster, and still is, since it debut in 1979 ( I was 12 years old then). Riding this coaster at night was even better as it was "pitch black" all the way through. Last year, I rode it at night and OMG, they added lights in the first part of the second tunnel and lights in part of the last helix. In case you havent guessed it, it's The Beast. It's still my #1 wooden coaster, but why did they have to add those darn lights? It has ruined the ride at night. If it's for "emergencies", then turn them off and only turn them on in that case.

Hold on, what was that about MF and no airtime??? There may be only 4 spots incl. the 1st drop, but in my opinion each one of them delivers magnificent airtime. Then again, I've heard that the ride experience can vary greatly depending on the wind conditions. Can anyone confirm?

I'd have to say that X-flight (I was there for the commercial shoot) was kind of a disappointment. I heard all these great things about "flying coasters" but IMO the only great thing about it was the intial flip over where you are 100 or so feet above the ground. But I will ride it again and maybe it will be better with more riding.
Hopefully!

Has to be MF. After pulling into the parking lot and seeing that hill i was pumped. The only problem is the ride sucks after that hill. It's just a way of slowing it down.

Worst coaster ever rode, hands down is that stupid piece of junk Six Flags WoA put in. X-Flight, went there Thursday for the commercial shoot, very disappointing. One park should not put so much hype on a giant piece of junk. Like the park don't like the ride. They should also consider opening it too. I ride and find out. Should be working around the end of June. Hopefully!

[ This Message was edited by: 6FlagsWoAFreak on 2001-05-20 19:52 ]
Riding this coaster at night was even better as it was "pitch black" all the way through. Last year, I rode it at night and OMG, they added lights in the first part of the second tunnel and lights in part of the last helix. In case you havent guessed it, it's The Beast. It's still my #1 wooden coaster, but why did they have to add those darn lights? It has ruined the ride at night. If it's for "emergencies", then turn them off and only turn them on in that case.

I got so p***ed the first time i rode at night with the newly added lights. I threw my arms up in disbelief... I simply couldn't believe the park was ruining the pitch black, shake you around, finale helix. It completley ruins the night ride for me, seeing how the drop into and the final helix are my favorite parts of the ride...

Volcano: The Blast Coaster. I understand that it was the first of its kind. I wish it had loops and more than just inline twists and a dive after the first inversion out of the volcano. The ascension from the volcano is awesome, just the rest of the ride should be made longer and more exciting.

Magnum XL200 was my biggest disappointment. I thought it was as awesome as people say it was, but I don't think it lives up to their expectations. It sucks SOOO much! B&M hypers are much better than it! Why do people love it SOOO much?!

The Riddler's Revenge at SFMM. I waited in a two hour line to ride it. by the time I got to the front of the line my feet and legs hurt from standing so long and all I wanted to do is sit down when the Riddler's Revenge is a stand-up rollercoaster.

Jaguar at Knott's Berry Farm in California. It was big when it first came out, but it sucks! we dubbed it the "monorail". you never leave your seat, you hardly feel any g's, and you have to wait in line for up to 2 hrs. i almost fell asleep, and it ended up as a contest to see who could grab the most branches.

[ This Message was edited by: TotallySFMM on 2001-07-07 02:58 ]
Magnum XL-200-- Im sure it used to be thrilling and I loved it before MF came and took over the place (whether or not it packs a lot of airtime just the whole plummeting down a 310 foot tall hill at an 80 degree angle is amazing.. especially in the front at night.. and the peoples reactions just make the ride that much better)

Mean Streak looked great and it's got a pretty big drop for a woodie, but when I went on it (in the front) I could see all the brakes about 6 or 7 and the drop felt like it was about 90 feet instead of 150 or whatever it really is. I actually put my head back and took a quick nap!

I have a HOLE Park I was Majorly disappointed in. DCA, I was really glad I got pre tickets for only 20 dollars. It was more of a restraunt then an amusement or theme park, And I was really dissappointed in California Screamen. It seems they slowed it down when ever they should have sped it up. Really tame rollercoaster. I would let my 4 year old nephew on that ride.

And I to thought Superman at SFMM was a BIG Disappointment. I rode freefall right before I went on it. I like freefall better. and its not as Noisy. I hate how loud Superman is. You can hear it anywhere in the park. And when your in line for Goliath you pray that it breaks down so it doesnt hurt your ears.

Texas Giant.

I always have been looking forward to riding this coaster, especially since it always gets so much media coverage on specials and so forth.

WHAT a let down.

It LOOKS great...but it was all lateral G's, WAY overbraked (I thought we should have just disembarked mid course. It was that BAD.)

Reminded me of the Beast. That also USED to be a great ride, but over time the excessive braking of it has reduced it to a shadow of its former self.

The WORST Coaster out there.... would have to be... Phantom's Revenge!
Last year I went the day before they closed Steel Phantom because I had never been there before, well I rode it 8 times in a row and absolutely LOVED this ride... and I was sad to see it go!

Well this year, I though.. "hmmm MAYBe this revenge will be BETTER...." Wasn't I WRONG!

The good part about it is it still has the First 2 drops, the bottom of the 2nd one doesn't seem as sharp of a turn, and it doesnt' even feel as steep, I guess cause the seats are so lose that you flop around inside it while you're gettin some good airtime.... well the third hill is pretty sweet too.... i like it alot, but after that! WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!!!!

I mean come on, the unnessesary humps right after each other are asking for people to show up in court w/ back braces and neck braces! I mean come on.... this absolutely made me want to leave the park, but for the crappy 25 bucks I paid, I felt i had to try and enjoy myself.... so I rode EXTerMINATOR for the 1st time.... this coaster is DEFENITLY BETTER then PHANTOMS A$$! Best coaster in this lil' dinky park!

(takes a deep breath)

Oblivion. Yes yes I know it was a world first and yes the droppy bit thing is quite cool but WHY DOESN'T IT DO ANYTHING ELSE??? Why, for heaven's sake, when they designed the thing didn't they make it longer with some dips and curves and stuff. All it is is a circle!! I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth and thinking 'if that was in the USA they would have done more with it'. I just don't think it is worth waiting an hour to do one drop on a ride that lasts about thirty seconds.

It's a bowl of sticky, smelly pooh as far as I'm concerned.

Look, mods! I did a search so this wouldn't be a repeat topic, even if it started five months ago! Hee! Anyway, my most disappointing coaster was probably Magnum. It had great airtime, but the stupid lap bar was really hard and hurt my thighs after a while. I love airtime and out n backs, but Mangum was just too rough for me. Give me Racer @ PKI anytime over Magnum. Another coaster that was disappointing for me was Montu. I was really hyped to be riding this monster of a coaster, but it just didn't deliver. The drop was alright, but I had no stomach sensation, maybe because its curved. The inversions seemed pretty spaced, too. I liked the Immelman, but the one on Fire is way more intense. The batwing would have been a lot better if there wasn't a stupid trim right before it. That trim was on pretty hard, too. I really felt that sucker! The MCBR was on really hard. It was on about as bad as Goliath, so being in the front, I slid into my restraint, and slid to the side of my seat down that drop. The second vertical loop was alright, it had some positive G's, and there was way too much slow pacing before the final inversion. There was even a hill that I didn't think we'd make it over, but we did, barely. Those two coasters are very overrated.

I agree with you that i thought that the launch would be faster. But then i realized, that would make the corkscrew way to intense. i'm not attacking you, i'm just stating my opinion. But i don't think that you would like being thrown to one side on that corkscrew. it would give an unnecesarry headache. I understand your thoughts, that they should have made the launch faster. But when i thought about it, they could have easily made the launch faster. I have to go with Joker's Jinx at SFA. The ride looks awesome with neat colors and an interesting layout. I thought this ride might rival the Hulk as my favorite, but after riding it, JJ didn't even come close. After the launch(which is good), there is nothing left in the ride that impressed me. It's a rough ride, and the pacing is terrible. I thought the ride was going to come to a complete stop at one point. I can see why FoF is in the dark. Heck, you can't see anything on JJ anyway with the restraints and track blocking your view at all times.

Hercules looks so cool when I saw pictures of it. When I rode it, it sucked. It went so slow. It had bad pacing. It was a boring ride.

Mean Streak. It looked so awesome from the ground, but it was REALLY rough and there were too many brakes.

the villain at SFWOA. It looked great and my freind who went there said it was great but i just recently went and it sucked.

i agree with tycoon, mean streak, despite being 150+, was a

SLOW AND BORING COASTER!

it flat out sucked; no where near as good as even the racer at PKI!?

I agree with lots of the ones above.
But I would have to say one of the Vercoma SLC.
[Suspended Looping Coasters.]
The term SLC I always said
********y Lame Coaster
Some Lame Coaster
I remeber in 1999 I went to Six Flags Astroworld to ride Serial Thriller brand new then. I had never ridden a SLC before thought they would be good. Only road once and walked away shacking my head. What a lame coaster.
Maybe I ridden Montu to many times. Most don't compare.
Montu

Manhattan Express - It looked really cool going around New York New York Hotel but it was very expensive, long line, and most importantly it was a horrible rough ride. High Roller was also disappointing. You think it would be really exciting and scary being so high but it was quite lame.

I thought Serial Triller was going to be one of my best coaster i have ever ridden only to be aangered by it. It had some good foot choppers, but ive seen better on Dueling Dragons. And the restraints looked kewl but they hurt very badly. The ride layout was nice but it as not as good as i thought.

vekoma flying coasters, these have to be the biggest waste of a coaster ever made, there uncomfortable, very low capacity, very slow, and put so much pressure onyour upper body it makes the whole ride very unplesant.

windjammer.. it sucked (well i never got the chance to ride it but everyone that rode it said it sucked) i cant believe they replaced derby racers for that piece of crap... oh well next years coaster will be better im sure

The most disapointing coaster fo me was X-Flight. All these people from school went and said it was awesome. I rode it and i thought differently. It gave me the biggest headache ever. Well that ride sucks dont listen to anyone that says that it was kool.

i think that alpengeist at BGW was the most disappointing ride ever.

You gotta be kidding me!

MF you can tell they just did it to break a record..lol

GAcoasterguy

It's a tie...

X-flight (SFWoA)...NOT WORTH THE WAIT. It was uncomfortable, took too long to load, and was a waste of time (I'm still looking forward to B&M's design). Since it was built by Vekoma, I should have known it would be rough.

Magnum was really dissappointing too. It was rough, and the air time felt really "forced" (on most coasters it just feels like it happens by accident, not by design). Then again, it was built by Arrow, so I should have known it would be rough.

Mean Streak it looks so awsome from the ground with all the twisted track and the hieght. But it turns out to be boring, the first drop is very bad for a 140 ft. coaster and it's way over braked

I was quite disappointed by Batman KF, it looked like a really great B&M floorless, but the ride just did not deliver. No forces, no good negative G floating effects. Add an immelman and a zero G rollover and then itd be a sweet ride.

I have several:

1. Raging Wolf Bobs- First, how the heck can a coaster be rough when it's going friggin' straight?!?! That stupid coasterv jostled me around like a rag doll when it was on a straight part of track! HOW? Also, the last half of the ride is agonizingly slow. It feels like you're only going about 25 to 30 mph.

2. Magnum XL-200- I'd heard rumors about this coaster being overrated but I was hoping they weren't true. WRONG! Crap, I mean, okay, it actually was really good and is definitely one of my top 5 steel coasters, but the #1 coaster in the world? It's not even #1 at Cedar Point! lol.

3. Lightning Racer- I was actually really disappointed in this coaster. I'd heard great things about it, but it was just way too SMOOTH for me. Yes, I know most of us here at Coasterforum prefer our coasters smooth. And I do on my steels and out and back woodies, but I was hoping for more of a rough and tumble out of control sort of ride on this one. But it didn't have one. Also, the whole dueling thing just doesn't do it for me.

4. Mean Streak- A 150 ft. tall ride that isn't the least bit exciting. Is that even possible? I didn't think so but Mean Streak proved me wrong. I mean, that first drop is like it's not even there. It's weak. And the rest of the ride could've been great, but messes up by just having drops that go part of the way to the ground instead of all the way, not generating enough speed to make for an exciting coaster.

Those are my big 4 overrated coasters. Thanks for your time.

I gotta say for me it was Magnum. I heard so many good things about the ride and saw that it won all these Golden Ticket awards and the ride just plain sucked. It was very rough, the drop was not thrilling, and the cars on that ride are just plain ugly!

Magnum. I don't know how it was number 1 on the lists for so long. It is a good coaster but nowhere near how good as it is hyped up to be.

I would have to say Jaguar. they advertised it as being a huge coaster that went all over the park. it was a kiddie coaster that went around like 3 rides.

You have no idea. Desperado IS THE ANSWER TO THIS THREAD. Don't believe me, go take a look at this gorgeous ride. Through pictures, videos, whatever. Take in all its beauty and photogenic looks. Then go ride it and only to find out it has got to be the worst hyper-coaster ever created. You'll be lucky if you get off with just a bruise or two. That thing hurts like a mother, and I know when something hurts. Windjammer @ Knott's didn't even hurt as much, and it had OTSR!

Well, normally disappointment comes with high expectation. So being called disappointed doesn't mean it's bad, but it's just looks too good before you ride it.

To me, it's Kraken.

my word. it must be Mayan Mindbender. It smells, stinks and is really not thrilling. the only two ways it can be thrilling (or exciting ;)) is if you yell at the top of your lungs while saying funny words. and a very nice looking girl sites in front of you. (because of the way you sit.....lol ;) ) you sit like your straddling a horse. sort of. ish. lol. :D

For me it was Steel Phantom, we had heard so much about how great it was, we had to get there. When we did, the sign said "Only 10 more days to ride", that was the year they were getting rid of it. I was just very disappointed, wasn't the ride I had heard about from other people and the Discovery Channel.

They only other one that totally disappointed me was Alphengiest, I was looking so forward to it, but it just killed my head, I thought my head was going to be turned into pulp, as I posted in another thread.

I was disappointed by Dragon Mountain at Marineland in canada. Maybe it was because I had really high expectations for this terrain coaster that tops out at 186 feet on a hillside, i think was hopiung for a steel looping version of boulder dash. The ride isnt that bad, but it never picks up much speed and it has trims that can only be matched by American Eagle at SFGam.

For me it was definetly X-Flight

It looked so cool, the videos made it look great, and I had heard alot of great stuff about it...and it sucked.

Mean Streak would easily win this if I had ever heard anything good about that piece of flaming dog doodoo.

ID have to say T2 at SFKK. It looks so cool just looking at it cause the design is original and one of a kind. But the ride is so rough for a ride of only a 90 foot drop. It gives me headaches that last throughout the day. I like how the coaster looks and dont want them to get rid of it. It could use more cushioning and some work. I dont know what more to say than that.

I was kind of disappointed with Rock 'n Rollercoaster. A decent launch with some nice G's through the Cobra Roll, but not much after that. Plus, the OTSR and seats were uncomfortable as hell. I actually had more fun on Space Mountain.

not wanting to dis"RESPECT MY(your) AUTHORITAH!" but RnRC doesnt havce a Cobra Roll...;) it as more fo a butterfly wher its 50%vert loop to 50% corkers then 50% very loop..but you still go the same way you start..not turned around..
and for me..the most suckyest coaster was.. Hyper Sonic XLC..its just crap..i was soo happy to get to ride it because it was clsoed alot..but on day 2 of my 2002 trip it opened at like 4pm..so i got in line waited about 20mins and got on..and lets just say...i woulnt wait more then 10mins for a re-ride.... teh lapbar system hurt...the speed..didnt feel it..the top og teh hill very little air time..the very drop..so samll didnt even feel steep...and the turns..you think meanstreak is bad.....DAMB! the turn was sooo shakey then the speed hill the air time was good but the lap bar keeps you down and then the trtain comes to a dead stop...and i just wanted to get off....its just a very bad ride...Everyridee in the park is better..even Ana and FOF! WITH OTSRs!...but its not 100% teh coaster its that TV shows and what other people said just made me think ti would have been more.....lol as much as i didnt liek it i still got a Tee Shirt from it...

I thought Georgia Scorcher would be an awesome ride. I was sort of upset about something else going on at the time so I don't think I was in the mood to ride a coaster when I rode this one. It wasn't bad...I just expected it to pack a punch and it just didn't quite hit me hard enough.
