View Full Version : Most Surprising Coaster

05-05-2001, 09:33 PM
Say you are about to ride a coaster and you aren't excpecting much, then you ride it and it was insane. are there any coasters that did that to you. or vice versa ones that let you down. For me one was, Scorpion at BGT, it is a tiny coaster and the loop was incredible and so was the helixs. It was awesome. Also, Cyclops at Big Cheif (WI) it was incredible! what for you?

05-05-2001, 09:47 PM
Top Gun at PKI. I know that many people do not like this ride because it is short, so I had heard nothing about it when I first rode it. I was pleasantly surprised by the short yet smooth (as far as Arrow coasters go), fast, out-of-control ride.

05-05-2001, 10:02 PM
Gemini at CP. It looks so tame and boring but is smooth and that first hill is huge. You can't wipe that smile off my face when we are racing neck and neck with the other train. Great ride!

05-05-2001, 10:03 PM
All those abundant Mind Erasers at every single friggin' park. Well, the first time I rode one I really digged the Zero-G roll and all the other things in it. Not bad for such a small footprint.

I agree with slipknot. Gemini was a fantastic coaster, and truly surprised me by it's smoothness and quite excellent airtime.

The Wildcat at Hersheypark. The first year it opened, I went to Hershey without even being aware that they had a new coaster. And when I saw it, I laughed that they had blown millions of dollars on a pint-sized woodie. But it's a monster - fast from start to finish, with ejector-seat airtime.
<BR>And man, I thought I was the only person on Earth who really loves Gemini. Talk about a coaster that gets no R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

the eureka mountain mine ride at dreamworld australia. it's almost totally inside a man made mountain and looks pretty pathetic but i'd have to say it's the best mine ride i've been on. especially the surprise final drop right at the end.
<BR>i've been on big thunder mountain and eureka mountain mine ride kicks it.

coaster man098
05-05-2001, 10:59 PM
goliath. it surprized me because before that i never rode a good hyper (magnum and steel force) and wasn't expecting it to obliterate medusa

05-05-2001, 11:13 PM
I know this sounds stupid...but the Coney Island Cyclone. I just looked at it and wrote it off as being small and not a big deal. Hopped in the first seat...it blew my mind. I didnt have a chance to catch my breath the entire time.

05-05-2001, 11:16 PM
Riddlers Revenge really did because the ads made it look really slow and i was 6 loops? so wut viper has seven. then i was like...WHOA!!! that is great! and Ghostrider suprised me because it was the first great wooden roller coaste4r i had ever ridden.... And knotts 2 previous coaster were jaguar and windjammer. So i wasnt expecting much...

05-06-2001, 12:44 AM
Ghostrider. Oh man looked at it, Looked at my friend and said "Well looks pretty cool" Got on it after a day at Magic Mountain. Went up that lift. The lift is short and it doesn't really look that tall. So we creeped over the hill and Baaaaaaammmmmmmm We were gone not to be seen for 3 min. Up down side to side almost seemed like it was a dream Slow motion going really fast can't see right then the Helix Baam and another Baaaammmm. I don't think we really understood what happened. But we were really happy people! So we rode again and again and again. It is my top favorite coaster of all time!

05-06-2001, 12:53 AM
SPACE MOUNTAIN at Disneyland. I was like it's slow not very tall and has to be pretty short to fit in that building. When i rode it i was amazed. It was a LONG ride and you can't see the track so you never know where you are going and it leaves you all messed up. It was a great ride!

I had good excpectations for Rock'n Rollercoaster, but I didn't excpect it to be my second fav. The most dissapointing coaster is Skull Mountain.. I waited an hour and a half for the worst ride of my life!

05-06-2001, 11:27 AM
This might sound kinda weird but when I was at CP we went on Blue Streak. I was kinda mad because I wanted to get in line for Raptor. Blue Streak really packs a good sized punch for not being that big and all. I love Blue Streak I rode it 5 times before I got in line for Raptor. It just goes to show that the ride don't have to be huge.

05-08-2001, 09:18 PM
I agree with birderboy, the minderaser coaster was a pleasant surprise. I truly didn't expect much out of them. Granted they aren't that great, but a surprisingly good amount of fun. I just wish they were a little longer. Its rather sad the first train is waiting on the brakes before the second train ever leaves the station.

05-08-2001, 09:34 PM
the coaster that supriesed me most was batman the ride. after alpeneist it looked comical but in someways was better but way too short

05-09-2001, 10:16 AM
I would not call these two "insane", but they were my biggest surprises...
<BR>1) Leap The Dips (Lakemont): Leap the Dips and Skyliner were my reasons to go to Lakemont. Skyliner surprised me (was not expecting such airtime on that first drop), but Dips really caught me off guard. It's historical significance aside, it is really a fun coaster (my wife and I laughed the whole way... through our 4 rides on it).
<BR>2) Scorpion (Busch Gardens Tampa): After being at IOA the day before, and riding Gwasi and Montu earlier in this day, I rode Scorpion because "it was there" and it was a coaster. It really caught me off guard. It is not the most intense or thrilling, but it is really a fun ride. I wasn't expecting that much from it, and I was more than pleasantly surprised. There are some parts where you come so close to other parts of the track that you are checking your neck to see if your head is still attached.

05-09-2001, 10:30 AM
Excalibur at ValleyFair! surprised the heck out of me. It doesn't look like much of a ride but it's great. We didn't want to stop riding it.
<BR>As for disappointments, it's no contest. Thunderbolt at Kennywood. I was so looking forward to this ride because it's been ranked #1 so many times. It turned out to be the biggest letdown I've ever had. And the ride HURT!
<BR>I will never ride this coaster again.<BR><BR><font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by: DEK on 2001-05-09 10:31 ]</font>

05-09-2001, 11:42 AM
I would have to say the Rock-n-Rollercoaster. You don't expect the takeoff the first time you get on it. I knew that it would take off but not the the extent that it does.

05-09-2001, 01:43 PM
I would have to agree with slipknot, Gemini at CP and Blue Streak, THen I would have to agree with Riddlers Revenge, that just blew Mantis away with its smoothness and speed...

05-09-2001, 01:47 PM
My first ride backwards on the Rebell Yell at PKD was a big surprise. I had rode it many times forward. Backwards seemed to give this out and back much more air time and you aren't thrown into the lapbar but into the padded seat back. A whole new ride to me!

05-09-2001, 01:54 PM
I was surprised at what a great coaster Lochness Monster was at BGW! I am not a big arrow fan due to roughness but this coaster was great!

05-09-2001, 01:57 PM
THE INCREDIBLE HULK, the first time i rode it, i never bothered to look up to see it coming out of the tunnel, and when i rode it, it was AWESOME

05-09-2001, 02:10 PM
The coaster that surprised me most many years ago was Z-Force at Six Flags Over Georgia. It didn't look like much- it was smallish and laid out almost like a tame old Mad Mouse coaster. But the diving turns were a new and thrilling element I had never experienced before. One day when there were no lines I rode it 20+ times in a row.
<BR>The coaster has since moved to SF Magic Mountain and was renamed Flashback. You can see pics here: <!-- BBCode auto-link start --><a href="http://rcdb.com/installationgallery128.htm" target="_blank">http://rcdb.com/installationgallery128.htm</a><!-- BBCode auto-link end -->

05-09-2001, 03:04 PM
thunderhawk at dorney. When I first saw this ride I didn't even bother going on it. A few of my friends wanted to ride it later in the day so I decided to ride it with them anyway. It was a lot better than I expected

05-09-2001, 03:26 PM
my first ride on Blue Streak @ CP was an k ride, so then we rode raptor and then it started to rain so we hped back on blue streak and sat in the very back seat, we got on and the thing was tearinb through the track, i wasnt expecting all that airtime, but boy did it deliver.
<BR> another coaster that suprised the crap out of me is the big dipper at SFWoA, this thing had standing air on every hill and me and my sis are both pretty skinny so we were almost falling out of the single pos lap bars. also i wasnt expecting to be stoped on the vert spike of S:UE

05-12-2001, 03:40 PM
This coaster didn't suprise me that much, but do you agree that Viper at SFGAm, was awesome!!! It is the coolest layout, a ton of airtime, and overall one of my favorite wooden coasters.

may the FORCE be with you
05-13-2001, 02:06 AM
Don't know if anybody will believe this, but mine was Millennium Force. I wasn't expecting it to be anything like that, but it ended being so much fun, strong graceful but yet powerful. I didn't believe a rollercoaster could be like it was, and its ashame how much it ruins the Magnum.

05-13-2001, 05:32 PM
Well I'd have to say Umm. The Hulk because I watched it come outta the top a few times and it doesnt look like it goes that fast but when your on it WHAM! Quote"It's going to work...it's working...no somethings gone wrong...Noo!"

05-13-2001, 06:00 PM
the first time i rode joker's jinx. it was SURPRISINGLY PAINFUL!

05-13-2001, 09:41 PM
Millenium Force?!?!!? Wow, that is kind of wierd. i was so scared in that line!!! And the hulk that ride was very intimadating!! Dudley Do rights ripsaw falls, was so much fun!!! i thought. there is so much more than you see. i loved that ride!!!!

Old Crow
05-14-2001, 12:55 AM
The Scooby-Do coaster at PKD was much more then a kiddy coaster in my book. We squeezed into the car and man did it give a good little ride. There are not many kiddy woodies that ride as intense as that one.

05-14-2001, 01:05 AM
the first hyper i had seen or rode really threw me for a loop
<BR>it was superman:ros at sfa
<BR>the airtime was like nothing i had ever experienced before

05-14-2001, 04:18 PM
Good: Woodstock Express @ CP. Snappy li'l bugger.
<BR>Bad: Thunderbolt @ Kennywood. I rode it in the back seat last year, and there was no air at all. I ain't there if there ain't air.

arkansas twister
05-14-2001, 04:25 PM
I would say the ultra twister at six flags astroworld. When you see it is not very big, but is suprising. It is a togo prototype pipeline that drops you straight down and then you do many twists inside the pipeline and then are sent backwards through twists to finish it off.

05-15-2001, 07:59 PM
Everybody i talked to said that Manhatten Express was bad but i thought it was awesome!!! That twist and dive element was amazing. I thought that it was surprising that so many people could not like this coaster, it was awesome in the front and the back.

05-15-2001, 08:03 PM
I would easily say Ghostrider. You look at the ride, and it doesn't look that special. It's not that tall, doesn't have any really unique elements, and it doesn't even come close to breaking any speed or length records. It just looks and sounds pretty average.
<BR>Something about that ride though really is special. It has become an instant classic, and is destined for greatness. It simply blew me away the first time I rode it, and it keeps surprising me every time I go back.

Jim Payne
05-15-2001, 08:03 PM
Ghostrider. Prior to Ghostrider the last wooden coaster I had been on was Psyclone at SFMM. I was shocked.

Erik Johnson
05-15-2001, 08:51 PM
My pick is SFNE's Superman. I was expecting an average hyper (since it was a kind of cheesy Six Flags park) and what I got was the absolute best roller coaster experience ever. So much airtime and positive G's!! I don't think SFNE even meant to build as good of a coaster as they did!

05-15-2001, 09:02 PM
The Magnum blew me away the first time I rode it when I was 10 years old. I had never been on such an amzing coaster. Also, surprisingly enough, Raptor. The first inverted coaster I ever rode was Alpengeist and I rode in the front seat the first time. It was awesome, but when I rode in the middle it wasn't nearly as fun. I was expecting the same out of Raptor, but that is awesome no matter where you ride.

05-21-2001, 03:05 AM
I was surprised by Gemini and was also surprised to see how many people felt the same. The first drop is amazingly steep. Of course at Cedar Point, you hear how steep MF and Magnum are, but Gemini just kind of shocks you.

05-21-2001, 09:15 AM
Ghostrider for me. I wasn't expecting that thing to be so fast and wicked. Ghostrider's statistics show that could be lame. But when I rode it, it blew my mind away. Since that day, I learned that a coaster doesn't need to be tallest or the fastest to be a great ride.

05-21-2001, 10:09 AM
For me it has to be the Raging Wolf Bobs at SF WoA. The first time I rode it really suprised me. Though it doesn't look like much and I've rode a lot of rides better it still suprises me every time. In my opinion this is one of the coaster world's hidden gems.

05-21-2001, 02:37 PM
Mine is definately top gun at canadas wonderland, although im sure wen i get to cp this summer mf will take over. For all u americans comin to toronto go to wonderland they hav great coasters!

05-21-2001, 02:43 PM
I would have to say Rock'n'Rollercoaster at Disney Studios

05-21-2001, 03:44 PM
I was expecting a terrible ride on Mean Streak, but I ended up thoroughly enjoying it. I didn't think it was nearly as rough as I've heard people complain. The trim brake on the lift needs to be taken out, but other than that, it was a good ride.

05-21-2001, 04:02 PM
i have to go along with the person who said the MindEraser. I expected it to be pretty tame after riding S:ROS, but boy was i wrong. It went super fast and you were thrown from one inversion to another

05-21-2001, 05:25 PM
GHOSTRIDER totally. I had not heard anything about it, saw it, thought, OK, some wooden thing, a moderate coaster, sounds fun.....but then....then.....AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHO HMYGAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWRRRRRSCH...that first drop! it kept going...and going..and there were MANY *huge* drops on that. the first one is just one of them.

05-21-2001, 05:31 PM
Blue Streak @ CP, its a perfect warmup coaster and it may look dull, but the airtime is awesome.

05-21-2001, 08:37 PM
My most supprising coaster is comet at Great escape, Lake George New York. I saw it and i thought it looked ok but when i got on it it was awesome, i didn't expect all of the airtime and how big the drop actually was <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_eek.gif"> There's nothing like a good ole woodie <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif">

Yankee Cannonball
05-21-2001, 08:54 PM
Yankee Cannonball. I had already ridden Cyclone at SFNE, and thought it was okay, but figured Yankee Cannonball wouldn't be much better. I was wrong. You get great airtime over the third hill. It's a short ride, but a lot of fun, and it's my favorite wooden coaster. (I haven't ridden very many. <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif"> )

05-21-2001, 08:55 PM
Wow. The Demon @ SFGAm. 2 loops and in the back....2 corkscrews
<BR>ALso the Raven at HOliday World

05-21-2001, 08:59 PM
Rock n' Roller Coaster at Disney. All the other coasters are pretty tame when compared to the others out there, but this was impressive.

05-21-2001, 09:08 PM
The ride that surprised me most was the Thunderbolt @ Kennywood. The first time I rode it I had not been paying any attention to where it went out of the station. That drop totally caught me off guard.

05-22-2001, 12:12 PM
I was in line for the Wildcat at Hershey Park, and I though "this ride looks pretty cheesy...why would they put an onride photo thing for it?"
<BR>I came off and got right back in line. It was a great suprise and a fun, fun ride!

05-22-2001, 03:21 PM
I was suprised by The Great American Scream Machine at 6 Flags Great Adventure and also suprised by The Gemini at CP.

05-22-2001, 03:40 PM
The first time I looked at Big Dipper at SFWoA, I wrote it off as a has been, loser coaster. I got on it because my little sis wanted to, and I had a heck of a ride. Speed the whole way through, great views, awesome tree branch headchoppers, and a cool turnaround. This coaster is one of the best in the park.

06-18-2001, 05:14 PM
V2 totally blew me away i thought it wouldnt be as good as medusa but its way better

06-21-2001, 03:09 PM
It has to be Superman Ultimate Escape, and Thunderhawk that coaster looked like like a kidde but when I rode it in the front I came off with bruised knees!

Matt M
06-21-2001, 04:41 PM
<BR> Viper at SFGAm and the Cyclones many mirrored images and clones. Ride them in the back, those woddies kick @$$!

Cyclone Master
06-21-2001, 05:12 PM
Loch Ness Monster hit me with a double whammy of suprises. First: The drop. I didn't think the drop looked that steep from the ground, but when you're on it, you feel like you'll fly out of your seat. And I never felt that much air on a drop with OSTRs . Second: The helixes. I thought those things would never end, and it was very well themed, too.

06-21-2001, 05:33 PM
Well, there are three surprising rides for me....
<BR>1. Tennesee Tornado at Dollywood, I didn't expect Dolly to have anything good, but this ride surprised me. I rode it four times in one hour, the lines are great there.
<BR>2. Big Bad Wolf at BGW. I didn't think it would be much of a ride, considering I'd just ridden the great Loch Ness and Drachen Fire, but it turned out wonderful.
<BR>3. Lightning Racer at Hersheypark. The ride didn't seem overrated, and it wasn't really promoted very much at the park when I went, even though it was opening year for it, but the ride was Oh-So-Smooth and awesome! I reccomend this coaster for all the woodie lovers, it truly is sweet!

06-21-2001, 07:16 PM
Lock Ness Monster at BGW. I expected it to be a typical bumpy Arrow looper but wow! what a ride! <IMG SRC="/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif">

06-21-2001, 07:25 PM
well i think that Runaway Train is pretty surprising. the first time i went on it i thought it was gonna be one of those tiny coasters thats like 5 ft high and has 2 drops, but i swear that lift seems longer than medusa's when u r on it. plus, the scenery really makes you think your gonna hit a tree. on i believe that second to last hill, you actually get some air, something you really don't expect on a family coaster. also, there isn't that much to hold u in. when i went on it with my super skinny friend she realized if she tried, she could easily slide out of the side
<BR>"The opposite isn't war, its creation!" RENT

V2 surprised me because i wasn't expecting much from such a small coaster but its great. Another ride that totally surprised me was Big Thunder Mountain at the Magic Kingdom, Orlando. I rode it when i was younger but i thought it was great and so much fun with great theming. I thought it was gonna be boring, anyone else agree?

06-21-2001, 10:19 PM
Lightning Racer at Hershey Park. It looked so small and didnt look that great. This was before any ads. i rode it and it was AMAZING!
<BR>I was disappointed with Steel Force at Dorney. I had thought it was gonna blow me away but it just ended up being another coaster.

06-21-2001, 10:41 PM
I agree, Gemini. Looking at Gemini, its so subtle and tame. But on it, Its a great ride. Not big, well, not BIG, but that first drop sure does take you. And when you are racing the other train, its a great ride. Looking at it and riding it are two different worlds.

HA HA! Hour and half! Sorry, didn't mean to laugh. I like Skull Mountian, however, I've never waited more that 5 minutes for it.

Anyway, I LOVE HP's Wildcat, too. Also, Talon surprised me. I expected Batman, but it's a WHOLE LOT better!

I also agree that Steel Force is dissappointing.

08-17-2001, 06:13 PM
The most surprising coaster was steel force at dorney park. i wasn't expecting much but man do you get airtime. i think it's better than nitro.
The most dissapointing coaster was hercules at dorney park. i had high expectations but there's brakes on the drop and you go so slow through the already short track.

I agree with the Gemini part. I thought it was going to be SOOOOO Weak but it packed a huge punch, i love the drop and airtime. Magnum also impressed me. Unfortunately i rode MF first so while i was going up it didnt seem that high at all, but the second drop, airtime and speed really surprised me!

08-17-2001, 08:36 PM
V2 surprised me i never though it was that cool

08-17-2001, 10:20 PM
I would have to say any of these figure-8 twisters

New England Thunderbolt
Dorney Thunderhawk
Kennywood JackRabit

08-17-2001, 11:58 PM
i would say loch ness monster. i thought it wasnt gonna be that great but i was defiently suprised. i loved it.

08-18-2001, 12:26 AM
I would half to say Incredible Hulk.... at IOA.... you cant see the back half of the ride so its a total suprise...and the launched hill blew my mind... and the brakes b4 the corckscrew crazyness!!!

08-18-2001, 12:28 AM
Rock-N-Roller Coaster at Disney MGM Studios...I was expecting a typical Disney Coaster...but that one really has a punch to it!

08-18-2001, 01:31 AM
Viper at SFMM was kind of disappointing,
fun but it could be faster.

I hear it was alot more fun before they added the trim brakes.

Roar, also surprised me, it looked weak, but was awesome, also AC was by far the most. I thought it was sooo weak then on the way up i was like, o man, wut the **** was i thinking 10 minuetes ago!

Most definitely have to agree with that one! I was surprised at how smooth it was. Sitting in the station waiting to launch, staring at that tight overbanked turn at the end of the tunnel, all I could think of was, "uh-oh this is gonna hurt!"
Plus speed definitely lives up to it's name.

roar is kinda weak i never get any good air just a lot of ejector air no floating its still an awesome ride tho

08-18-2001, 03:59 PM
Ya, AC was totally awesome, i rode it when it was BRAND SPANKIN NEW!

08-18-2001, 11:09 PM
flight of fear at kings island i had no clue what it was i thought it was a flat ride and it ended up bein awsome and u couldnt see much and it had all fo those inversions

08-19-2001, 12:36 PM
Gemini, Blue Streak, Top Gun at PKI, and Space Mountain at Disney World all took me by surprise.

Also, when you come into the entrance at Holiday World, the Raven looks tiny and slow. One ride on this changed my mind.

08-19-2001, 01:01 PM
Mine was montezooma's revenge, I had never been on a shuttle before and not know what to expect when that launch came I swear I was left behind I could not tell where I was. All that airtime with only a lap bar was insane. I would do it again in a milla-nano-(something exceedingly small)- second.

08-20-2001, 01:23 PM
I think Wildcat at CP packs a pretty good punch for such a small ride. I wasnt expecting much, but I was surprised.

08-20-2001, 02:01 PM
The Thunderbolt @ SFNE suprised me. It's so much smaller than Cyclone but is a lot smoother. It also has nice air on the camelbacks.

California Screaming went into the ride thinking disney coaster came out thinking wow! It has a great launch, cool music, has a great drop which seems a lot bogger than it is (107 ft.), good pacing, decent speed, great bunny hills, and not to mention it is the smoothest coaster i have ever been on!

Son of Beast. I never saw pictures of it or heard anything before I went to the park. We went on it just for something to do and I couldn't believe how intense it was. The 50 ft drop out of the station was one thing but that first helix actually scared me. The rest of the ride was just relentless after that. Even MF didn't scare me as much.

Thrill Rider

Demon at SFGAm shocked me. I loved that ride. Loch Ness Monster also surprised me a whole lot too and the Big Dipper at SFWOA surprised me.

08-31-2001, 11:53 PM
Ghostrider was a big suprise
i had heard it was a great ride but it was my first wooden coaster so i didnt know what to expect

09-01-2001, 03:44 AM
Ghostrider. I'd heard nothing but good things, but DAMN. That thing blew my socks off and became my favorite coaster.

09-01-2001, 10:33 AM
Jack Rabbit. Didn't look like much, but was unbelievable.

09-01-2001, 02:01 PM
There were a few that caught me pleasently by suprise.

Millennium Force: This was my first coaster over 200 feet, let alone 300, so I had absolutely no idea what to expect. Let's just say it delivered. Big Time.

Gemeni: This was the only coaster at the Point, (besides Millennium Force) that I got the stomach-in-throat feeling. I loved this ride.

Raptor: The only kind of inverted coaster I had ridden before this was Top Gun at PCW, a Vekoma SLC. Big difference!
Raptor was smooth, and really intense going into that last helix!

Superman ROS (at Darien Lake): I rode Millennium Force only a few weeks before, so I figured "Nothing could even come close to the Force!"
I was wrong, this ride almost took my #1 place. Hell, if it consisted of that 3rd hill alone, I would still consider it a top 10 coaster!
That one hill is most definetly the most extreme ejector airtime I have ever felt.

09-01-2001, 02:03 PM
Rock N Rollercoaster!I thought that ride would be bad but it was pretty good

09-01-2001, 03:47 PM
actually skull mountain suprised me alot. it looks like a family non-thrill coaster indoors, but actually it keeps up its speed and has pretty good airtime.

I agree with you, it did look like a tiny ride from the outside, but it was an insane ride; a great indoor coaster

09-21-2001, 08:02 PM
Medusa East. I didnt think it would be that great because the only rides that hd inversions i rode before was a boomerang and an slc so it wa way better.
Also Nitro cuz i didnt think it would be anything like S:ROS @ SFNE but it came pretty close but it didn't beat it.

09-21-2001, 08:13 PM
Viper at sfgam, it looks small, but it is so good.

09-21-2001, 08:49 PM
V2 actually suprised me. I didn't think it would be that good of a ride because al it is is 2 towers and the ride is over in about 40 seconds. However I soon discovered that it was a great ride and worth the wait

09-22-2001, 01:06 AM
I know this is kinda weird, but Disaster Transport really suprised me! It deliverd a quick and thrilling ride. Sure, the theming is pretty corny, but it deliverd a good ride.

12-23-2001, 09:15 PM
Incredible Hulk. I dont want to give it away, but the suprize on that coaster is unbelieveable. It caught me by total suprize. It sacred the bajezza out of me. They need to make more coasters like that.

12-23-2001, 10:06 PM
Loch ness monster. wasnt expectiing much but it ruled. The raven was better than i thought too.

12-24-2001, 01:37 AM
the two coasters i didnt expect much out of but were actually amazingly fun are two classic out and backs, the wild one at SFA and Blue Streak at CP.

MF, i didnt think that it was possible to have that much fun, period.

12-24-2001, 03:00 PM
I was suprised by Ghostrider. I didn't realize it was that long and intense! Now it is my favorite woodie. Other rides that suprised me were Taz's Texas Tornado (wow...that was intense!), Scorpion @ BGT, and Flight of Fear.
Negative suprises: Joker's Jinx-too rough

12-24-2001, 04:00 PM
If you don't know what is coming, Kennywood's Jack Rabbit is BIG surprise!

12-24-2001, 09:52 PM
Boulder Dash. I was expecting an OK but bumpy ride, and WHOA! What a great ride, fast, air time and bunny hills galore. I love that ride sooo much!

12-25-2001, 06:02 PM
superman ultimate escape @ sfwoa

12-25-2001, 06:11 PM
Any of the S:ROS's, didn't expect THAT much ejector air

12-25-2001, 07:12 PM
Jack Rabbit at Kennywood and the Rollo Coaster at Idlewild

12-26-2001, 03:29 PM
Gotta be Blue Streak. When I first saw it from the parking lot I pointed it out to my wife and said to her that it must be Junior Gemini because it was so small. It sure packed one heck of a wallop though and had some great laterals and air on it.

Pretty cool!

D T ...it is so FUN and a great coaster :D :D

12-26-2001, 04:45 PM
Ghostrider, the drop after the brake totally took me by surprise!

12-27-2001, 07:59 AM
No ride has really been better or worse then My expectations because I really don't like to have pre-judgments on a ride. It is funner to just let the ride take you on it's corse. I guess that's why I liked Windjammer. Ghostridder was great. California Screamin' is a GREAT family coaster that is still thrilling and has air. Manhatten Express is a good ride that scared the fecies out of me when it went through the twist-n-dive, I though it would never dive down.

Raging Rider
12-27-2001, 09:07 AM
Gemini was very surprising, and so was Cornball Express. I was expecting a small slow drop with small hills and just a little airtime, but it really seemed fast and had great airtime, the helix was also pretty fun. Both Gemini and Cornball Express are great rides.

01-06-2002, 04:54 PM
gemini at CP. It is so fast and so steep with great head choppers but doesn't look like such a great coaster.

id have to say Blue Streak at CP. it looked like a little woodie that wasnt worth going on but my cousin wanted me to go on it. so i went on it. i sat in the back and unbuckled my seatbelt and loosened the lapbar boy, airtime, airtime, airtime!

01-25-2003, 07:00 PM

rcdb says big dipper at sfwoa goes like 35 mph. when i went there last summer, i could have sworn it went 55+ mph. that thing is awesome. the ejector airtime on top of every single hill is crazy. it should be talked about more often.

01-26-2003, 10:08 AM
Cyclops at Big Chief's Karts and Koasters in Wisconsin. I was expecting a nice little ride when I took my place in the back seat. Boy was I wrong, I felt like I was going to be thrown out and I put a death grip on the buzz bars the second time around.

01-26-2003, 03:17 PM
Space Mountain at Disneyland Paris. I dont want to spoil this ride for those of you who havent been there , but there is a surprising element right at the start .

01-28-2003, 04:12 PM
Raptor at CP:)

01-31-2003, 03:55 PM
Wild Thing at ValleyFair! I figured it was no big deal until I rode it. It is not in the same class as Millenium Force, Magnum or Ragin' Bull, but it packs a punch.

I thought the exact same thing. This ride has probably the most airtime of any coaster I've been on (excluding Pheonix.) This is a great, underated, and surprising coaster.

02-01-2003, 09:54 PM
I'd have to say that Space Mountain at DL in California was the most surprising coaster I've ever ridden. When I got on the ride I was really expecting a darkened version of Big Thunder Mountain, which I had ridden earlier that day. Boy was I wrong. That ride was so incredibly intense that I couldn't quite believe it for myself. When I got off the coaster I couldn't stop smiling from awe and sheer exhileration for about 5 minutes.

RAPTOR! I looked at it thinking it wasn't so great because I rode Alpengiest before. I was wrong. For some reason I enjoyed Raptor so much more than I enjoyed Alpengiest. The inversions had such a smooth and steady flow to them, that it just clicked. It is a AWESOME coaster, one of CP's best!

02-12-2003, 07:38 PM
I think that the X Flight was most surprising. It didnít look to bad, but at the top of the hill when it flips---OMG!!!!!!!!! The rest of the ride was a blur.

Mind Eraser was also very surprising, especially being so short, and I laughed at the kid that got sick before I got on. Silly meóI didnít get sick, but definitely intense.

02-12-2003, 08:33 PM
I'd say Flight Of Fear, Since i rode it this year with out lapbars for my first & only ride. I was expecting a inclosed Jokers Jinx. An okay ride in it's own right but nothing better. I Personally thing FOF comletely and udderly blue the st*t out of JJ. I felt 10 times as fast. I just didn't like the slow parts near the block where you could hear that awaful music. ack! After that I would say Raptor cause' it doesn't look like much (compared to MF, Magnum you get it.) and it isn't all hyped up (like MF, Magnum etc.) But man was it good ties for my #5 with an Intamin Invert. and another great suprise: Volcano- TBC. every one hypes the launch and first invertion but I think it was the zero-G rolls tht did it. WoW! The I think Gemini.... that first drop is insane. The rest of the ride felt faster and smoother than Magnum.

02-16-2003, 07:43 PM
For me, it would have to be Vortex at Paramount's Canada's Wonderland. The only other Arrow suspended coaster I had been on was the Iron Dragon, so I was expecting the same tame and slow ride. I got in, and found myself hanging on to dear life after the first hill! Geez that thing is deceptively fast.

02-16-2003, 10:07 PM
Taxi Jam at Paramount's Carowinds...absolutely terrifying

02-17-2003, 01:05 AM
Jr. Gemini sure packed the punch for me. I was so excited when I got off I wanted to ride again. All the tall (200+) coasters suck. No airtime whatsoever and the ops staple you into the seat.

02-17-2003, 01:01 PM
Hereare my surprising coasters:

The Legend and Raven: I heard they were good, but these two ride are incredible.
Thunderbolt-Kennywood: Quite a fun ride, and the ravine drop right out of the station is a surprise, for sure.
Gemini- Self-explanitory
Twister- Knoebel's- All the talk from that park seems to revolve around Phoenix. Twister is really good, too.
Big Dipper, SFWoA- Ride the ride from the front seat, and 32 MPH feels a whole faster, while you're not being tossed into the air.

Mean Streak was surprising in the fact that I'm surprised that my kidneys still are fully functional after riding that thing. :)

03-07-2003, 11:17 AM
Corkscrew at CP...the short pop of airtime surprises me everytime especially in the back seat.

Cyclopes and Zeus at Big Chief's. They look tame, but they aren't.

Wild Maus at Busch Gardens. I couldn't believe how hard the cars take the corners.

03-07-2003, 06:08 PM
Wild Mouse at BPB. It looks small, slow and dull. It feels tight, fast and frightening. I thank God I'm still alive every time I get off it.

03-08-2003, 12:02 AM
one word "beast" i think beast is unlike any other coaster. you here all the talk about how great it is, you try to look at pictures on the internet, but there's only like three that show you absolutely nothing of the ride, then you spend a day in the park, riding all the rides son of beast, vortex, thinking to yourself 'where is the beast' becasue it is so hidin in the park. then you hop into the queue, take you seat, creep up the incredibly slow lift, and from there it is pure insanity!!!

03-13-2003, 12:12 AM
Cyclone at SFNE...if its runing good and un trimed you feel like your dieing..... ride the back seat and keep your hands up...its a shaky ride but its still "DAMB!" the Scurve drop is the best part....:)

Carowinds 73-03
06-05-2003, 06:08 AM
I would have to say Millennium Force, in 2000 This was my first coaster over 180ft and i noticed no inversions so i wasen't expecting much but boy was i wrong. I think MF got me hooked on Hyper/Giga coasters

07-12-2003, 01:05 PM
This sounds odd but Canyon Blaster at SFMM, best airtime in the park

Thrill Rider
07-12-2003, 05:17 PM
Raven definately did that to me. The general public here in Indiana tend to think that the Raven isn't a very good coaster just because it is small and isn't at a big park. That ride blew me away the very first time I ever rode it.

FoF at PKI also did that to me after the replaced the OTSRs. I had been on it before, but when I rode it for the first time after the modifications, I was blown away.

Georgia Cyclone completely blew me away. This one prolly was the most severe as far as under-estimation goes. I couldn't believe how good this ride was.

Raptor also had a similar effect the first time I rode it. I knew it would be good but not as good as it was.

07-12-2003, 05:43 PM
Swamp Fox at Family Kingdom! It was tiny, so i thought, i'll ride this "tame" (or so i thought) coaster, and man, does that coaster have some awesome airtime!! I couldn't believe it had so much airtime!! Also, Mad Mouse at Myrtle Beach Pavilion. I thought it looked fun, and it scared the heck out of me. I thought i was about to fall out on the the pavement!!

07-12-2003, 05:53 PM
The first time I rode Mindbender it really surprised me, and Wildfire at SDC went far beyond my expectations as well.

07-12-2003, 05:55 PM
When i was in line for it i thought that it was just gonna be another B&M inverted like top gun since they both had 6 inversions, but when the first time I rode it i had my hand up and after the loop i put them down to hang on for deer life! It jerks you around but in a fun and smooth way, if u know what i mean

Lock ness at BGW b/c of it's smoothness and good layout and b/c there is a loop in the begginning and then at the end, there were not just all clumped togather

big bad wolf b/c of its fast past ride action swinging!

I thought that the hurricane in mytrle beach was gonna be so much more but when i rode it, i was disapointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MAGNUM XL-200!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it was back in 1996 when for whatever reason i thought it would be a fun idea to go to a little park out in the middle of nowhere. Something told me I should go to holiday world in indiana. At the time i had only been to big amusement parks like cedar point and kings island among others. I liked wooden coasters but didnt consider them any better than steel. When I got on the raven It totally changed my whole thinking. Now I realized that a relatively small wooden rollercoaster could be the funnest thing on earth! Ever since Ive been in complete love with this type of park and that type of ride.

Anymore I dont really judge a park or a coaster until im there, but that doesnt mean that rides dont surprise me

Superman ultimate flight was the first flyer ive been on. I was completely surprised by the whole ride especially the "pretzel loop" I think its called. It feels like your going down mf on your back!!
I didnt think that the flyers would be as insane as they were. I was in no rush to ride any of them.

The cheetah at wild adventures was quite insane also for being a kinda small ride.

bk, step away from the crack.
