What is the best time to visit SFNE to avoid at least some crwods?

From my experience, early and late seasons are the best. Definitely don't go on weekends.

Yeah, if you want to avoid crowds I'd reccomend going on a weekday in very late August, or sometime in September. All of July and most of early and mid-August, it's packed.
