Wood

Magnum will always rule!

Even though my two favorite coasters are Magnum and Nitro, I think wood are generally better. My top ten list goes S,S,W,W,W,W,W,W,S,W

Steel coasters are better than wooden coasters because they are smoother and are able to do things wooden coasters can't do.

I like steel much better.

1. You can't build many inversions and different track elements on a wooden coaster.
2. A wooden track is much rougher.

Steel because a Wooden Batman & Robin the chiller would not be cool

I think that steel is better because it is much more flexible than wood. You can build coasters out of steel that you couldn't even imagine being built out of wood. For example look at Son of Beast. It's wood with a loop... however that loop is steel. Steel gives creators the ability to do things with coasters that have never been seen before.

thats like comparing apples and oranges
they're both good for different things
steel is good for inversions and tight turns and smoothness (as long as it's taken care of properly)
but wood gives an out of control feeling because it is rough and rickety... also it gives great airtime

When you said that I couldn't help but think about the movie Election. Reese Witherspoon was so funny in that. :)

Anyway, back on topic. I like steel coasters better because they're generally smoother and can do more things. Here's my top 10 list:

S,S,S,W,S,S,S,W,S,W 7 Steel, 3 wooden coasters. Though this list may change, my top 2 will probably remain the same.

I still think steel is a whole lot better than wooden coasters because it is more versatile. Versatility is always a plus for a coaster designer/manufacturer.

I'm a woodie kind of guy and Although I love steel to death, I would take a woodie over a dteel. Steel is very important to the building of both types of coasters but I love the odd feeling and slight roughness a wood gives you. I always feel more out-of-control when i'm on a woodie and I think woodies are some of the most beautiful things in the world.

Steel because of the different types of steel coasters you can have. There is only a couple of wood types. But as for Steel you go go anywhere from a stand-up to a 4d.

even though my top 3 coasters are steel, wood is generally a better type of coaster. ive never been on a wooden coaster that i havent liked (even mean streak)

I a woodie fan. One reason is that an old steel coaster becomes a dated relic that offers few thrills and usually requires replacing to keep crowds coming. The longer a well running woodie exists, the bigger the draw. I just don't think stell has that appeal. Other than space mountain, what "old steel" coasters will folks go out of their way to ride? All the steel fans are always focused on the new stuff. The woodie fans love new coasters, but always have old classics on their lists of "ridden" or "to be ridden".

Wood

Wood has a feel that I like in coasters.

I think it's that they came from life, not made entirely by the hands of man. They are almost like real beings and feel like they give a real experience. Steel coasters seem virtual and feel like a re-run. Woodies have a real personality. I believe that is why parks give wooden coasters an atmosphere, and I believe parks have to give steel coasters a theme, to give more life to them.

The roughness of a wooden coaster is always more tolerable then being beat up by a steel coasters harness. I guess that may be because wood gives and steel does not.

Who cares how much you can do with steel? If you like them so much, why would you want to do more with them? It seems that there's a bigger difference between a wooden twister and a wooden cyclone, then their is between a suspended and an inverted.

I prefer steel, but mainly because there are a lot of neglected wooden coasters out there that require a lot more maintenence. There's nothing like a great woodie, but the thrillseeker in me still yearns for the things that steel coasters can do which woodies can't.

In all the other polls stating wood or steel, I always voted wood. Not changing my vote now, I love wood coasters best.

The age old question of wood ar steel?
Steel slightly edges out wood because they /can\ be more original. There is only so much you can do with wood.

I don't know, it's so hard to decide. I think I'm going to go with Steel, even though wooden coasters feel more out of control. Of course, I haven't exactly ridden the best wooden coaster out there (that that my woodies have been bad ones), GASM, GA Cyclone, and Gwazi.

I'm going with wood here. Sure, steel can do more and all that stuff, but if it's better, then how come so many wooden coasters can give just as much thrill without those advantages? IMO, wood is far superior to steel as far as it goes with coasters. Although I do have environmental disagreements (they do take up a lot of wood), I still prefer to see a nearby park put in a wooden coaster to a steel coaster.

I'm definitely for wood. There is not a better type of coaster to ride as your first for the day. Not only does it get your blood flowing after that long car ride, but also completes the mix of the remanants of your breakfast.

Definitely STEEL. You can bend steel in so many more ways than you can with wood. Actually, you can thank B&M for that. Prior to their arrival, I preferred wood.

Wood. Steel just feels too cold and homogenous, and isn't really about bing out of control. Wood on the other hand has that "shake", and gives a truly out of control ride. And it won't always be the same when you ride it. Hence, wood is IMO superior.

I wasn't really sure until I went to SFOG the other day. Batman, S: UF were fun, but GASM and Cyclone were crazy. So the answer is Wood.

coastercory06
06-06-2003, 01:55 PM
I like them both about equally. Steel is crazy, and there is so much you can do with it. Heck, my top 5 is all steel, and B&M are the greatest manufacturers ever. But, I gotta give the edge to woodies. I love the traditional look and feel, and they seem to defy time and age. Take the Phoenix or Thunderbolt as examples. There are many types of steel coasters, but each time seems to come as a fad, and then a new type comes along, but woodies will always have their popularity.

Ok, my top ten is,

S,S,S,S,S,W,S,S,W,S

I am definetely a steel person.

I would rather have that smooth feeling, and the height, technology, and track designs, are so much better with a steel coaster.

I think I prefer wooden coasters becuase I saw and rode only few so I wish to "feel" more of them. In Europe till recent years there were only few wooden coasters but now things are different and still, wooden smells different, sounds better and feels different.

I like both really but wood coasters can be jerky at times as well as bumpy. As for steel is much smother and I think is just more entertaining.

Well earlier I said steel, but I'd like to revise that.

Steel if you want intensity and innovation.

Wood if you just want a down right great time.

So for my final answer, it's a tie.

Wood is better. It gets that same out of control feeling in 70 feet that it takes over 200 feet with steel.

I agree with wackokid and didn't vote because of it. I love them both, steel and wood remind a little of cats and dogs. Steel has the sleekness and cat quickness, but wood is that old friend, lumps and all, that you can take your problems too and feel it understands, perhaps because it seems like it's gone through life too. (Sorry, to get so poetic.)

I WANT BOTH! lol you really can't choose they both have differnt qualitys that make them grat. When i ride a wooden coaster i except something differnt from whee i ride a steel coaster and visa-versa.

WOOD!!!! I have always liked the roughness of a good woodie over the smoothness of steel.

I would have to go for steel, I like smooth coasters. My top 3 coasters are steel, even though I do like wooden coasters and how they look.
