You know I always hate to see a park close down for good, but I am wondering what are investors thinking here. This is three years in a row that this place has had troubles financially. It really is time to start liquidating assets.
Makes me wonder if the bad taste in locals mouths from the closing of the Pavilion is what cursed this place.
Plus Hard Rock had no idea how to price the place, they were totally out of their minds.

I read a response to another article. Someone mentioned public officials with their approach to the transformation of the city, they're not as welcoming of tourists, their ban on bike weeks since I suppose it got too crazy in the past and the fact that the former Pavilion lot is still just a sand lot. Tourism has been down. I'm not sure what the identity of the town is now. Did they want to become a more upscale beach property town when the times were good? When I heard about that buildup and saw the pictures of all the construction cranes I was bored with it. Cutting the Pavilion was a cut to my heart.
I wish the malls that existed between the 501 and the park were destroyed because I was totally confused with the orientation of where the park was when I tried to get off the highway. The empty outlet mall in front was not a welcoming sight. I recall right behind the park there was a new bridge that I just found out debuted right after my visit to the park. The Fantasy Harbour bridge connects over the intercoastal waterway to Myrtle Beach. There's another approach to the park now besides 501.
I didn't even know they had made an alternate route to the park.
And yes, from what I gather the MB officials are trying to make their image a more middle class/upscale experience downtown.
All the retail and stuff will be pushed out to Hwy 17 from the looks of it.
I hope that doesn't mean they will rip out all the cute little places unique to MB like the Gay Dolphin. Which is just a gift shop, despite the name.

Your web browser and the Maps site are incompatible (http://www.bing.com/maps/Default.aspx?v=2&cp=pmj3m58dns3z&scene=44709232&lvl=1&sty=b&where1=Hard%20Rock%20Park%2C%20SC)
Basically this is what I saw coming into Freestyle Music Park's parking lot entrance all the way in the back of the whole property before history was made and I met Wes at the park. This bridge at the back end of the property looked even more fresh than the park itself in June 2009. It would open a month later in July connecting to Myrtle Beach.
There was the similar problem in Wildwood, NJ with the the destruction and building to go upscale. It threatened the old Doo-Whopp culture of the town from the 50's.

The Problem with Freestyle park was the developers. The Original project the one The feasibility study was based on was More Amusement then theme park. Smaller scale and family friendly. Then this hole Hard rock thing come into play. The simple park grew in size for opening along with changing to a theme park.
They raised a lot more money and built a park that was not sustainable. There is not a big enough local population to Support the park. Though Relying on tourism they ran with hours closer to a local or regional theme park.
If An investor could be found and the Park retooled it could survive. but they need to run a season that supports the tourism base.
