View Full Version : Best-Themed Park in USA?

I want to know, which US park, in your opinion, is the best-themed. My vote would go to Disneyland in California, for the simple reason that it's Disneyland.

Mine would have to be Islands of Adventure in Orlando

I've never gone to IOA, but, from all the great things everyone tells me, had I been there, it would have gotten my vote

While Islands of Adventure may be the best park as far as thrill is concerned, I don't think it is superior to any Disney park when the question asked is "What is the BEST THEMED park?". Disney has, by far, the best themeing around, and IOA's rides may be faster, higher, and more thrilling, the "Disney experience" is far more satisfying because of its completeness.

I dont go there to look at the trees, or the pretty stuff, lol. Give me the rides!!!!
CEDAR POINT gets my vote!!!

I agree w/ Gravedigger, Cedar Point is the best!!!

CoasterFreak
05-03-2001, 10:15 AM
Sorry Gravedigger, but Cedar Point is not a "theme park." There are no themes, only cheaply-made "steel rides". They are we we call an "old-fashioned amusement park". You are straying from the orginal question, which is "What park is best-themed?".

This is a tough call between DL and IOA, but I think DL has to take the cake for best theming. IOA definately has more thrilling rides, but DL just engulfs you into the total experience. You just can't beat the fact that the park has even taken the time to make sure you can't SEE outside of it!!! You really do get pulled into a totally different world at DL. When you can do that and still have great rides you've got something special.

And BTW, I'm talking strictly DL here. The Magic Kingdom in Florida can't hold a candle to DL.

CoasterFreak
05-03-2001, 10:24 AM
Ghostrider, the Magic Kingdom at Disney World may not beat Disneyland, but I think the "World" as a whole tears it to shread when you consider it has four great theme-parks, three water parks, DisneyQuest, and so much more.

Disney Experince? I don't see much of an experince in DCA do you? 3 years ago I would have agreed with you about Disney being the best themed parks around, but how can you say no to IOA. I know Disneyland was the first, but how many times have Fantasyland and Adventureland been copied. Where in Disney is there so much detail like Seuss Landing where every single thing is bent to make you feel like your in a Seuss book yourself?

Coasterfreak, I'll agree with you on that one. DL is far superior to the Magic Kingdom park, but DW as a whole simply blows away the (he-he) "Disneyland Resort".

Sorry, I still can't take that name seriously...

Take out all the rides, and IOA is still ahead of either Disney Park. I am not knocking Disney. IOA has just upped the ante.

VorTeX

I think Disney World (including all the magic kingdom parks like epcot, animal kingodm, mgm) take the cake.
But what's life if you never get to the Point?

IOA gets my vote. Going to both Disney and IOA, I think IOA is better themed, all around...all of the islands have every little detail themed...and the rides are a ton better than Disney, too!

CoasterFreak
05-03-2001, 11:22 AM
I don't think IOA has "upped the ante" so much as just come up with some original themes. Disney's themes don't seem so original becuase they've been copied so many times, but I do have to conclude that Disney does a much better job of immersion (and thats what theming is all about) than IOA. For example, Splash Mountain is far superior to Dudley Do-Right; Tower of Terror is a much better free-faller than Dr. Doom because of its ability to immerse you in a much better (and not to mention less cheesey!) storyline. While the Disney rollercoasters may not compare to the Islands' collection, you have to admit that the themes Disney gives them (the whole ride, not just until you get onto it like IOA) are far superior.

I'm not anti-IOA at all, I just think they have a ways to go to reach Disney-level, and Disney had better do something before IOA reaches that level.

05-03-2001, 11:28 AM
Ok here it goes - It's ok I can take the abuse but as far as theming goes the ANIMAL KINGDOM at WDW took theming to a new level. Yes it might be lacking in the thrill ride department, but the question was about theming. Universal did a great job with IOA and I was very impressed, but the detail at AK is amazing. It is only a matter of time and a couple of big rides away from becoming a great park!

VorTeX
05-03-2001, 11:40 AM
Yeah, I have to agree with goopy... I was very, very impressed by it. The rides they had were excellent and the nature surrounding everywhere just sucked me right in.

Knotts. I have to buy into the theme aspect and Knotts has done a better job than Disney, save Main Street.

Skyboss, don't tell me the Point's rides aren't cheap compared to those of Disney or Universal. What is CP's most expensive ride? MF=$25 million. A typical Disney ride can cost close to $100 million, sometimes more! And what about Spider-Man at IOA? Don't tell me the technology backing that ride up is greater and cheaper than that of Magnum XL... and where I live has nothing to do with the truth.
Iceman
05-03-2001, 11:59 AM
it's IOA. The only reason it beats disneyland is because while disney pushes you into its theming, IOA just sits there, and it really wants you to feel like you're in the ultimate comic book or the jungles of jurassic park...
just my opinion.

I think IOA an WDW's MK are tied for first, with DL in a close second. IOA has great theming (with the exception of Dr Doom's Fear Fall, which is really cheesy) tied into great rides, for theming alone does not a great attraction make. The ride is a part of the theming. MK has such immersion that is unbelievable. There is no outside world when you're there. DL just seems too close to civilazation to be number 1.

Best theme park has to be Animal Kingdom I agree with that or Disneyland. The best Thrill park has to be Magic Mountain easily I don't know how anyone could deny that!!! Especially with Deja Vu and X on the way!!!

I'm glad that we can finally discuss this without that stupid Jeff deleting it. But I haven't been out to many of the great parks, so I would have to say SFMM just becuase of sheer quanity of coasters (hell they even have great quality).

Islands of Adventure, having relatives who live only 8 miles from IOA is the best. I have been there countless times and i'm still not tired of it

I LOVE LOVE LOVE IOA - it is definitely the best THEMED park there is - I read many posts about DL being better than MK at WDW - I thought the two were identical - what's the difference that makes DL so much better??? Even though BGT has more roller coasters than IOA, IOA is a better THRILL park because of Dr. Doom and Jurassic Park - -

Busch gardens, williamsburg is the best themed...i loved riding the big bad wolf through the fake town and swoosh-drop over the river. that is definitely the icing on the cake. Apollo's chariot is excellent. Loch ness and Alpengeist was well done in the theming. love the natural look, not the concrete and steel look like most major parks...theose parks are great on their merit. but busch gardens Williamsburg is the grand champion!

Tycoon612

I think that Disneyland is the best themed because nothing beats looking at the river with Splash Mountain on one side and Thunder Mountain on the other.

I haven't been to Disney since I was very young, so at this point, I'm gonna have to go with BGW. Went there last year, and even though they don't have a long list of coasters, the ones they have are great, and the park is simply beautiful.

BGW is tops. Where else can you convincingly travel so many countries in one day? There is nothing like the chase through the town or the trip down the slopes.

IOA is pretty cool to, but i don't think it has the exact effect as BGW. One is fantasy-like the other is like taking a real trip somewhere.

Knott's Ghost Town is the best theming around. With everything down to a blacksmith. Fiesta village and camp snoopy are good too. But the Wild water Wilderness and Boardalk themed areas leave a LOT to be desired. When you can go to disney or IOA and everything is good.

ParkFreak
05-05-2001, 03:16 PM
Ok, my 2 cents:

1. Magic Kingdom WDW
2. Disneyland Park
3. IOA

DL is a VERY CLOSE second, only because of the Matterhorn being visible throughout the park. What I consider great themeing is the immersion one feels going from land to land. MK's transitions are incredible. The crystal palace evolving Main Street into Adventureland, the passageway halfway through Adventureland into Frontierland and the subtle changes in the buildings between Frontierland and Liberty Square. . .just incredible!

IOA is fantastic in its detailing, but being able to see Jurassic Park from Seuss Landing just doesn't cut it IMHO.

Don't get me started on DCA!!!

Cedar Point is an incredible amusement park, but we're talking about theming here, let's try to keep on subject!

leftcoastpunks-MXPX
05-05-2001, 05:59 PM
Also the Paramount and Cedar Fair Six Flags parks. Paramount parks with the movies, Cedar Fair parks with Snoppy, Universal Parks with what else than Universal Movies and Marvel Comics. Then theres Six Flags parks with Looney Tunes characters, WB Movies and DC Comics. And last but not least, the Disney Parks with the Disney characters and Movies. All those parks within those company's have good theming, but very different from all the other parks.
