I want to know what you think is the most painful coaster?

I think its GASM at SFGAdv.

TrBiggar
05-04-2001, 05:01 PM
I would have to say it is Shockwave @ SFGAm if your riding it near the back. All Arrow megaloopers are rough, I think. So I guess that is no surpise that it is the roughest IMO.

Orient Express at Worlds of Fun, ouch baby, that burns! My brother cut his leg.

SIMStationMaster
05-04-2001, 05:06 PM
The most painful coaster I have ridden would have to be the Ninja at SFSTL. That thing is just horrible!

The odd thing for me about Shockwave at SFGAM is....I loved it! I sat in the front seat and I didn't experience any headbanging.

Having been on many of the above mentioned coasters, I can say that they don't even come close to stacking up to the pain and torture caused by Knott's Berry Farm's Windjammer, a coaster that is still at Knott's, but no longer operating.

This coaster didn't evolve into a painful device like so many others do with time. Nope, this was a torture machine from day one. It was so painful and so rough that Knott's closed it down only two years after its debut. There's something to be said for pain when a park sues the designer of a coaster.

You cannot describe how badly this coaster hurt. The OTSR's were made of a rock-hard solid plastic. They were huge - you couldn't even turn your head during the ride. And the track was so bumpy and jerky that you could not brace your head properly. The result was a headache unlike any other. It was harsh. Thank goodness it's closed.

Sorry, but the first time I rode Rockin' Roller Coaster at Disney World, I got a MAJOR headache. I mean, Aerosmith rock music mixed with a coaster that bangs you around enough already? Oh well, it got better the seconed time I rode. But it still left my ears ringing for 2 1/2 hours!

Mean Streak! Wooden coasters are obligated to be bumpy but, this bumpy? Come on, Cedar Point do something!

Number one would flight of fear, old style.

But since it doesn't exist in that carnation anymore, the dubious honor goes to Mean Streak with a very close second to Revolution at Magic Mountain.

PLUS they are tearing viper down

VTD
05-04-2001, 06:44 PM
actually, they AREN'T tearing down Viper, which is ok, because I think its a fun little ride, through dont ride it on a cold day. It is the roughest coaster I have ever been on though, simply because the OTSRs are just sandbags(literally) in the shape of shoulder harnesses.

PatMan007
05-04-2001, 06:48 PM
i bet they move viper to a smaller six flags park that needs rides.

I think the most painful ride would have to be SFNE's Cyclone b/c when I got off of it I felt like I had gotten beaten up. Never go on this one folks:<

robotman4
05-04-2001, 08:26 PM
The Cyclone at SFNE is rough, but still fun. A better choice would be Minderaser at the same park. My ears and head have never been in so much pain after a ride and what's with the monster shoulder harness?
I rode the Mean Streak once and don't plan on riding it again anytime soon. Especially with all the other great rides at CP.

I HAVE TO GO WITH THE SOON TO BE REMOVED WINDJAMMER AT (KBF), ITS JUST PAIN AND MORE PAIN ROLLED INTO ONE SINGLE COASTER.

The one and only time I rode Mantis I manged to get the "seat" locked into position when I was on my toes. I'm not a moron, just wasn't paying attention. Needless to say it was an uncomfortable ride and not worth the wait.

OrlandoCoaster
05-04-2001, 10:18 PM
Hmm...first time I rode the IDORA WILDCAT. You had to learn how to brace your right hip against the side of the car during the fan curve or else you would get bruised ribs. But once you figured that out, WHAT A RIDE!!

Most painful...how about this shuttle loop I went on in Japan. It was made by SENYO...HARD plastic OTS restraints....the SLOWEST chain lift of any coaster, and incredibly rough. Nothing fun about it at all.

40000man
05-04-2001, 10:27 PM
i totaly agree with scream machine being the most painful. I went on a day when it was raining and the ride ops, for god know what reason, turned off the break run, and we hit the first inversions at around 60 mph, about 15 mph faster than normal.

Professor KoasterFreak
05-04-2001, 10:59 PM
Hence the name, scream machine...=0)
The Carolina Cyclone, Hurler, ThunderRoad, and Vortex combined...can give you the fastest emptied Tylenol bottle I'm afraid. Didn't you ever wonder why they didn't have a FOF---the guests would have had brain tumors by the end of the day!

05-05-2001, 12:08 AM
VIPER'S GOTTA GO! It's the worst! followed by that nasty little Runaway Mine Train, and GASM is definitely a headbanger.

05-05-2001, 12:15 AM
I forgot to mention one thing at SFGA, ROLLING THUNDER IS SO ROUGH! I swear that everytime you go around a bend, the train slams into the side of the tracks and pputs yet another large split in the already dilapidated track.

arlok2
THE JOKER'S JINX AT SIX FLAGS AMERICA!!!

Catfish
05-05-2001, 10:18 AM

SFOG 52401

Come on people those rides are like being pinched compared to Flashback at SFMM. They say to put your head back but that just makes you slam your head against the OTS restraints. One of my friends teachers broke a rib on that thing.

RollerCoasterer
05-05-2001, 12:35 PM
The Robin side of Batman and Robin The Chiller at SFGAdv! Since its a launched ride and its not always going the same exact speed every time, this can be anywhere from moderately painful to "I think I just cracked my skull" painful!

Artex2020
05-05-2001, 12:38 PM
Well Gang, I have ta disagree with VoRtEx on this one (Mean streak isn't bad as long as you sit near the front, though I have to agree, the back is DEVASTATING! And though revolution isn't SMOOTH by any definition, it wasn't as killer as some others at the park *Cough* CYCLONE *Cough*) I would like to point out one no ones mentioned. "Raging Wolf Bobs" at Six Geauga lakes of wonder. This thing HURTS, and thats no lie, at ALL!

The break run on Volcano at PKD hurt (why don't we send the one drop on the ride directly into the brakes? ) The back of Grizzly can hurt too. My most uncomfortable ride was on Wilde Maus at BGW (no, really). I was taking my little sister on. When your as tall as I am it gets slightly awdward to get in those little cars with the seats at floor level, so I still had one foot on the platform when my sister, in her zeal for roller coaster safety pulled the lab bar down. over my knee. forcing my right leg to make an 'L' out of the seat and onto the platform. i didn't even think guys could perform a split like that. and it hurt 10x worse than the worst charlie horse i've ever had. the helpful attendant said "you're going to have an uncomfortable ride." i told him to "just open the lapbar." but my leg hurt the rest of the day.

The most rangbunctious coaster by far is Hercules at Dorney. That 150 foot drop into a steep banked turn is one of the scariest moments on wheels. If ridden defensively, it a heckuva lot of fun. Otherwise, its one vicious assault.

In a category of their own are the headbangers. Windjammer and Plight of Ears simply have no right to exist, IMO.
Viper at SFGAdv just because of the horrible shoulder harnesses.

I think Space Mountain @ Disney Paris or Vortex @ PGA would have to hurt the most.

Flashback at SFMM. I'm surprised they don't have gauze by the exits for all the people leaving with bleeding ears having had them knocked against the OTSRs.

Mean Streak at CP isn't a bad choice either. I had a headache after riding that one.

Raven_Rider
05-05-2001, 03:39 PM
The most painful ride I've ridden would have to Magnum XL-200. It was so hyped up, but on my first ride I was VERY disappointed...it was rough, and it had the worst trains of all time. The 10 lb. lapbars prevented me from getting any airtime as well.

The Cyclone at Lakeside Amusement Park in Denver. There's all these tree limbs that whack against your forehead! Even on drops!(ouch) Plus bigger people have to sit on one side to avoid crushing little people! back row especially, no headrests, you knock that little crease between your head and your neck where that big vein is against the back of the car, plus the twigs, plus smashing into the poor sould beside you. OW!

I hear it got better as the year went on, but I rode Son of Beast early in the year and it kicked my butt (or actually my back). Flashback at SFMM is a pretty nasty headbanger too. What's up with the guy who said that Magnum was rough?

Old Crow
05-05-2001, 07:57 PM
Flashback at SFMM was the worst ear pounding I took. Reciently, Votex at PGA has been pretty bad. Grizzly at PGA when it first came out was damn rough too. Now I can run faster then it.

Medusa West is the smoothest I've been on, (that may not mean much)

05-05-2001, 07:57 PM
I gotta agree with Raven_Rider....Magnum's bunny hills at the end are very rough. As soon as you hit the crest of each hill, you're jerked up into the air HARD and your legs hit the lapbar. OUCH!!

roughest part of a ride is The Wild one at SFA the last helix is horrible, the worst ride ha sgot to be FOF before new restraints

Tom Zeliff
05-10-2001, 09:08 PM
I'm surprised that it was well into Page 3 before someone mentioned Flashback! I like the ride, and hardly ever hit the restraints anymore. (tip: ignore the signs and lean forward. Look where you're going and brace for sudden direction changes) The roughest and most unpleasant ride I've ever been on though has to be the Rattler. That slow helix was just bone jarringly bad! The only smooth part was in the tunnel through the quarry wall (which was the best part of the ride I think).

Okay, I was really excited to ride Son of Beast last year, and I really do hope that it's gotten better because IT CHEWED ME UP AND SPIT ME OUT!! It wasn't really scary because instead of concentrating on the hills and the turns, I was concentrating on keeping my body as braced as possible in the seat. I rode the Beast and it bruised my arms, then rode SoB and it bruised my legs, they should build Uncle of Beast or something and go after my torso and head I guess. Of course that won't stop me from trying out SoB again this year!
Yes, Excalibur is rough... I rode it Saturday, and it feels as though the bath it took this year really sped it up... I actually don't remember any brake runs through it... But compared to the old FOF, it's nothing. At least it only has lap bars.
In defense of the Mean Streak, it IS bumpy, but its not painful, it just jolts you around a lot, I don't understand how you get pain from shaking, pain comes from banging and/or intense G's on your legs.

I have to agree with most of the posts here. I'll break my response into the two obvious categories since they usually are painful for completely different reasons.

Steel - Flight of Fear and Joker's Jinx (or as I refer to it "Headbanger's Ball"). These are listed for the brain abuse. Haven't been on FOF without the over-the-head harnesses. I understand they are much better. (Don't know if they have done the same on Jinx.) Mantis also ranks high for me too because of the brain-busting. I'm continually amazed people enjoy that coaster.

Wooden - Grizzly at PGA. I have bruises on my ribs and legs after every ride. (Have they ever performed maintenance on the ride?!?!)

I'll also add that Gwazi will pound you unless you get a really good grip on the lap bar. It's two great woodies in one, but I definitely recommend you ride next to someone... well, someone soft.

Windjammer at Knott's. When this ride first opened, I loved it for some strange reason even though it was bumpy. But as I grew older and went on more coasters, i noticed Windjammer was very bumpy. This ride hurts. It also has probably the bumpiest loop of any coaster. This ride hurts!!!!!

For me, the worst woodie I have EVER been on is Predator at SFDL. Even with its recent retracking, the ride is rough, and on more than one ocasion last month, the lap bar got jolted into my stomach. OUCH! also, someone give this ride a good oiling! Major squealing on this one.

The worst steel coaster for me would probably have to be Skyrider at PCW. Skyrider started off as a good coaster, if for only the fact that it was one of the first standups ever built (a clone of King Cobra at PKI). After having rode on newer standups, the primitive restraint system on Skyrider has to go. Actually, ditch the entire coaster and give the park a decent new one for a change.

Raging Wolf Bobs: Ugggh!
GASM(SFoG): I rode this in the back seat and every drop hurt like hell to me.

Mr. Freeze's front seat: Fine until you begin your return trip back down from that vertical spike. Then it all goes wrong.

Shockwave(SFGam): It's bad enough that you almost black out on the two successive loops, but Shockwave hits you with an extremely tight turn right after it, which is a bone jarring treat for the skull.

Iron Wolf(SFGam): My gosh the seats shake when the ride is not even in motion. And what's worse is that SF had to get rid of the uncomfortable restraints and replace them with this material that feels like a plastic bat! Get some new trains!

Chalk up two votes for the Big Dipper at SFWoA (Me and my neice). We rode in the back seat, which provided a lot of ejector seat air. However, we were also slammed back into our seats, which were poorly padded. Also, the lapbar was jammed into my midsection. Perhaps, further forward would not be so bad, but we were leary of riding it again. I can't believe somebody said Raging Wolf Bobs. They had very cushy seats. Second for me is the Boss last year.
Drachen Fire: more headbanging
Shockwave at SFGAmerica: still more headbanging
Viper at SFGAdv.: get rid of it!!!!!
Windjammer at KBF: still more headbanging part 2
Son of Beast, Mean Streak, Hercules: woodies are supposed to be rough, but not THIS rough
FOF, Joker's Jinx: OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great American Scream Machine: as if there wasn't enough headbanging in this world. I have ridden it several times, and some times it is rougher than others. Usually it is a very fun ride, but when it gets too rough it is no fun at all.

I have been on a lot of painful coasters. The 2 most painful coasters for me have been: 1)Viper at SFGAm. Most people that I talk to really like this ride, but both times I rode it, I got off with a really bad headache from being tossed around so much. 2)Iron Wolf at SFGAm, but this coaster was only rough because my feet were off the ground when my seat locked in place. So, during the whole ride, I was thrown around. Very painful.

Old wooden coaster and twisters can be rough too! Although they are rough, their roughness adds to the woodies being fun! Wooden coasters are meant to be rough, so they're fun! Roughness and steel coasters are another story.....

I agree Viper is soooooooooooo painful. You stay upside down on a corkscrew for like 5 secs. It doesnt sound like a lot but a regular roller coaster stands upside down for like only a second. VIPER OUCH!!!

Shockwave at SFGAm IS THE ABSOLUTE WWOOOOORRRSSTTTTT!!! But, did you hear about the lady's foot there? She was riding the thing at SFGAm where it spins really fast and the floor droops, but on the way back up it crushed her foot! it's Disfunct. now, but talk about painful!!!!!!!!

i would definitely have to say that Viper at SFMM hurts the most. Right of the first drop where it makes a sudden turn feels like it is going to snap your neck. of course, that is a very good ride from the front where you dont feel much. my next worst coaster would be Big Bad Wolf at BG Williamsburg. Coming of the drop top the river there is a turn that heads up the hill for the turn around to the station. again, the same feeling as viper only this time at the front.

Pysclone at SFMM is the worst! Even with your head back and your mind prepared, that thing slams you around like a piece of meat! Everybody on the ride was like "OW!" "I HATE THIS" or whatever.. A close second is Windjammer at Knotts (unfortunately, my first looping roller coaster)

Oh gosh...for me it has to be any middle car of the cyclone at SFOG....I had to pray for it to be over...It just hurt my back and head.....Always sit ONLY in the very front or very back of that ride...ANYWHERE ELSE HURTS!...either way..the fear of hitting your head on a rafter is always there and causes you to kinda bend down...the BAM! your spine may as well be a slap bracelet

It would have to be FLASHBACK at SFMM. Ouch, OUch OUCh, OUCH!!!!!. They need a chiropractor at the end of that ride just to get you walking straight again. Painfull ride. But as long as we keep it we can hold the title of Most Coasters in one park

Although the roller coaster itself is not bad, I had my most painful rollercoaster experience on THE BEAST. I had never riden it before and I had my arms up, we went around a turn right before a tunnel and that stupid divider in the middle of the seats jammed right up under my arm.
P.S. I loved the ride though and it did not happen again.

I gotta go with Coasterfreak2k and Ghostrider. Windjammer is by far the most painful hunk of junk on the planet. Knott's is one of the parks i visit most often and I'v only ridden Winjammer once. I wasn't aware they were closing it down, but now that i know i am overjoyed!! :D The second most painful would have to be Flashback at SFMM. I swear you can get wiplash on that thing.

I've been on Magnum many times. But one time a few years back I rode it and the scarf Brakes ( The ones on the hill right after the first tunnel ) were on. O got air on all the bunny hops but the last tunnel threw me out of my seat so hard my legs were brusied. that wasn't cool.

I would have to say King Cobra at PKI. That one gives me a headache every time! Maybe I just need to start sitting in the front. All the rough coasters I have been on, seemed to have their roughness tamed down in the front. Even Corkscrew at Cedar Point. Thats why I like the front seat the best. And the view of course.
