I'm putting more than five.....'cause I want to. And maybe someone might check out some of this music. I should't be surprised that you all like such mainstream music. Some of you people should maybe take some risks and check out some music that they don't play on the radio. Anyway, here's my list, in no particular order...
The Beatles, of course.
Cocteau Twins
Depeche mode
The Chemical Brothers
My Bloody Valentine
The Boo Radleys
U2, yes I do like SOME mainstream music.
Paul Van Dyk

Ever think that there are reasons people like this music. If all the bands you just listed went mainstream would you want someone telling you not to listen to them for the fact that they are mainstream?
I think Halation is talking about the people who like bands just because they are mainstream. Linkin Park, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, pure MTV-produced crap. If this stuff wasn't on MTV, nobody would like it. It's different if a band is around for years and then suddenly they go mainstream. Usually I lose my respect for them when they go mainstream, though, because they sell out. Offspring for example. Back in the day, they were my favorite band. Then Americana came out and they went mainstream and began to suck. Now I can't stand them.

05-07-2001, 04:05 PM
Heres my list. Ia agree about the offspring thing, Blink 182 did it two.
2-less than jake
3-catch 22
4-Bad Religion
7-Alkaline Trio
10-The Suicide Machines
yeah i like these non-mainstream bands. but even still you shouldent yell at people for what they like(n matter how crappy those bands are IMO)

The reason(s) I criticise mainstream bands like Aerosmith, N'Stink, Limp Bizkit are:
1. Their music is "safe". They take no musical risks. I've "heard it all before", it's dull.
2. It gets shoved down your throat everywhere you go. Personally, I get tired or hearing something fifty times a day.
3. In Limp ******wich's case, I CAN'T STAND their whiney victim mentality. "the world sucks..and I'm going to ***** about it". I wish Fred Durst would have blew his head off instead of Kurt Cobain.
4. The "music" is manufactured. Like Destiny's Child, yes the can sing and they have good bodies, but like half of the music out there, it was created by someone other than the performer. Thats why the punk rock "Do It Yourself" idea is REALLY about "keepin' it REAL", not some fantasy about riding in the back of a limo with a bunch of supermodels drinkin' Cristal.... give me a break......and as for people who think Blink 182 is punk rock...don't even get me started.

05-07-2001, 07:48 PM
i agree COMPLETELEY withe every word that you said, but who are you to tell other people that their opinions are stupid. EVERY WORD you said is right, but some people dont know any better than to like what MTV shoves down thier throat. you still shouldent teel people what to like. and allthough nothing that blink 182 puts out know, i still think that carousel is a very good song(its off of cheshier cat). i saw them at the warped tour like 4 or 5 years ago and they were playing on the small stage in the back(the one that punk kareoki is on)

05-07-2001, 08:11 PM
counting crows all the way

05-07-2001, 10:26 PM
Yea, I understand what your saying. Thats part of the reason that I stopped listening to most of the music I did a few years ago. Almost every band I had followed since before they were mainstream started changing their music to become radio stars. For some reason I started listening to rap. More of an underground music scene.

05-08-2001, 11:06 AM
I am entitled to my opinion, just like anyone else. If I think someone is stupid for listening to Limp Bizkit, I will say so. If people ARE having something shoved down their throats and they're fine with that, well I can say that I think they are idiots. That is one of the problems in our world today, I believe, is people who let corporations, the government, the church, etc. do all their thinking for them. PEOPLE DON'T THINK FOR THEMSELVES!!! Not that I have all the answers, but I believe people need to WAKE UP and question what is being fed to them on a daily basis. "Is Mc Donalds real food?" "Is what the newspaper tells me really important?" " Is the government and global corporations really concerned about MY wellbeing?" " Can MTV or Rolling Stone tell me what is 'cool' or 'hot' or 'tight'?" I say ****** no to all of that. Get your heads of the sand kiddies, and get REAL.

05-08-2001, 08:22 PM
Papa Roach
OPM-Heaven is a Half Pipe

Hey, I don't think that your band are all that great, and chances are, you don't like mine either. But we're all different, and people listen to what they want to. Picking on people b/c of what music they listen to is just asking for a fight. We all like different things, that doesn't make anyone wrong.

I didn't read all the posts too closely, but I can't believe no one has Guns and Roses. Slash is definitly on of the best guitarists ever and how many people have a voice quite like Axl Rose's. Here are my other favorite bands in no particular order:

05-17-2001, 07:55 PM
I am a big fan of MxPx and im really mad that they just played a show around where i live and i couldent go because it was a school night. i was very pissed

05-17-2001, 10:11 PM
Ya, MxPx rocks, and kudos to all the rest of their fans. I am just pissed because this is the first year I get to go to the Warped Tour, and their not gonna be there.

05-19-2001, 12:15 AM
MxPx is not really a lesser known band. They've been on MTV quite a few times, and anything that comes on MTV is not really lesser known. Anyway, I think they suck.
I am going to Warped Tour too (in Miami). I can't wait to see the Vandals, Rancid, Me First & the Gimme Gimmes, Dropkick Murphys, Bouncing Souls, H2O, AFI, Guttermouth, Fenix TX, and the Ataris. It's gonna be a great show.

yeah MxPx is a pretty well known baand(but not like Blink-182) but they havent tried to become played on the radio, they have *almost* sound the same(Pokinatcha punks sounds different but not much) the only thing the did was tone down the God theme from their earlier albums, but that came over time. i will also be goin to the warped tour but i will be goin to the one in boston. this year doesnt have that many great bands except catch 22 and pennywise.
its always alot of fun though.
The only reason they toned down the Christian stuff was becuase they were trying reach a more broad based audiance. Many people write off Christian bands as talnetless just because their music talks about things they don't agree with, so they simply tone down the Christian stuff and more people listen to them. If you've notived many Christian bands that went mainstream such as Sixpence None the Richer or POD leesened the Christian songs on their first mainstream albums. If you've heard MxPx's newest album "The Ever Passing Moment" you would notice that it has much more Christian content than "Life in General" or "Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo". A simple strategy of drawing in the unbelievers than hitting them with the truth

05-22-2001, 03:53 PM
You missed quite a bit then. The following songs either mention God or have Christian themes: Buildings Tumble, Educated Guess, Foolish (one of my favorites on the CD mainly becuase it describes my frustrations almost to perfection), One Step Closer to Life, It's Undeniable, and Misplaced Memories. That's 6 out of 15 which is much more than their last two albums (most of the rest of their songs talk about their girlfriends/wives LOL). Many of the songs don't say much about God, but they are speaking about Christian principles, and about their frustrations being Christians in a world dominated by sin (songs such as Foolish, Educated Guess, and Your Problem, My Emergency from Life in General). I think they have done a good job staying true to their Christian fans while still reaching out to non-Christians with great music.

Woo hoo to Tori Amos!

I can pretty much stand everything except for country. My favorite is rock music.

08-21-2001, 10:25 PM
I like all sorts of music. Right now though I'm into synth-pop like Rational Youth (http://channels.mp3s.com/channels/6/6949.html) (listen to Saturdays in Silesia [both single and album version] and just try not to stand up and dance [and best of all its not generic 'electronica' dance trash]), Depeche Mode (Think there was another thread about these dudes), and old alterno-rock like the Cure, the B-52s (and I'm not talking about 'Love Shack' which is too overrated! Listen to 'Rock Lobster' and 'Private Idaho' instead!), and Shonen Knife (just try and get tunes like 'Riding on the Rocket' and 'Milky Way' [both from "Let's Knife"] out of your head.)

Genres I don't like:

Soft Rock: Especially that crap from the 1980s. Soft Rock is a genre designed to make clueless soccer moms and sensitive little league dads (without nads) think that by listening to Micheal Bolton or Starship ("We built this city on rock and roll?!?!?" Sounds more like Dentist office music to me!) that they're still cool because the word "rock" is stuck in it.

Boy Bands: Self explanitory, but if you think the Backdoor boys and N'stinq are bad, just give a listen to Donny Osmond singing "Puppy Love." Wow talk about bad!!!

08-21-2001, 11:38 PM

Rock would be my favorite, but I like most kinds of music...I can only take so much of country though :)

:D Uh oh, Lars won't approve of that ;)

My favorite is syn-pop (listening to "Enjoy the Silence" now) and of course alterno-rock (the real stuff, not the copy-cat "mallternative" stuff like Silverchair and Hanson) like the Velvet Underground.

Oh yes, I've got nearly 1gb of mp3s (mostly bootlegs and hard to find oldies, and a few "guilty" pleasures I wouldn't be caught dead buying ;) lol) and a couple of music videos on mpg format (Jackos "Don't stop till you get enough" [best video effects ever :p] and Twisted Sister's "We're not gonna take it" [a video not musical classic])

Ain't Bear Share Grand? :D

I like most kinds of punk, but i'm not a big emo fan. Rancid, Bad Religion, and Pennywise are my favorite bands. Dont' really have a favorite song because there's so many good ones, but some i really like are "roots radicals" and "radio" by Rancid, anything off the "against the grain" cd by BR, and "The Secret" and "******* authority" by Pennywise.

Favorite music is EBM/Industrial, though my roots are based in hair bands of the late 80's and early 90's prior to the Nirvana destruction of the hair band scene. I then fell into that new found era known, at the time, as grundge rock, which later became stylized as alternative. However, all the alternative bands coming out at the time began sounding the same, and with it, lost my interest. A friend of mine introduced me to KMFDM, and that was my "backdoor" entry into the industrial scene. Now I am into the true EBM/Industrial sounds of bands most of you have never heard of simply due to the fact that they are overseas bands. I still listen to the "alternative" and "pop rock" styles of music on the radio in my car every now and then, but I prefer the tunes cranked from synths more tuned to my liking. Fav bands include:
1)Project Pitchfork
3)Velvet Acid Christ
4)Leaether Strip
and on and on and on.
