"AGAWAM - Six Flags New England hopes to add three new rides before the amusement park reopens this spring.
But before the rides can be built, the amusement park must receive permission from the city, including permission to erect a 146-foot-high ride called the Slingshot.
Officials at Six Flags declined to comment on specifics about the three rides. "I don't want to get into anything until the plans are finalized," Six Flags spokeswoman Melissa Pinkerton said Wednesday.
The amusement park recently submitted various plans to the city for the three amusement rides. If approved, all three rides would be built within the existing boundaries of the park, according to the plans created by Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. of Springfield.
The Slingshot would be located in the Crackaxle Canyon area of the park. The proposed ride is temporary and could be relocated to another area of the park, according to documents submitted by the amusement park to the city.
The Spinning Coaster would be 42 feet high and built around the Time Warp, an existing ride. The new ride would require approval from the Conservation Commission, according to the site plan.
The third proposed ride is the Typhoon Water Slide located in Hurricane Harbor, the amusement park's water park. The proposed slide would be 39 feet high, according to the site plan.
The Planning Board must approve the site plans for all three rides.
The Board of Appeals must also grant a variance for the Slingshot due to the height of the ride. The maximum height allowed for amusement rides is 45 feet, according to the variance application submitted by the amusement park. The Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing Feb. 14 about the height variance application.
Six Flags New England has been adding new rides regularly to the park since Six Flags Inc. of Oklahoma City, Okla., purchased Riverside Amusement Park in 1996 and renamed the park Six Flags New England in 2000.
One of the biggest additions to the park came in 2000, when Six Flags New England unveiled Superman: Ride of Steel, the 208-foot-high roller coaster which reaches speeds of 77 miles per hour.
In 2002, the park unveiled Batman, the Dark Knight, a twisting, turning floor-less roller coaster.
Then in 2003, the amusement park spent more than $8 million to significantly expand its existing water park, which was then renamed Hurricane Harbor. "
when i got to talk to the GM he told me that they would add a sling shot. and he also said a ride would go in some place in CAC>. it seems both are happening.. but for the spin coaster around timewarp.. thats going to be a hard fit..or a small coaster.
