Ohh pranks...

This happened last season while I was working at Front Rentals. So in an average day, Front Rentals rents out about 150 strollers. Now usually kids who ride in these strollers go to Peanuts Playground, run around in the mud, and slop it all over the foot area of the stroller. So in the morning, before we rent the strollers out for the next day, we clean it with some speacial Windex. Well considering the amount of strollers rented out each day, we use up quite a bit of the Windex, as compared to other Merchandise locations who just use it to clean windows.

At some point in July, the Merchandise Warehouse decided to play a little prank on us. Because the Warehouse had to constantly be the one who supplied us with the Windex, they decided to play switch-a-rue and replace the Windex with...Blue Kool-Aid. Well nobody noticed, I mean how could you?

Well 2 weeks later the Warehouse told us, and we felt pretty stupid. Though it did explain why the strollers were always so sticky, and we certainly found it funny the times when the children's parents would yell at their kids for licking the strollers. Hell, we just figured they were retarded.

That is absolutely hilarious, Marcus.

I think it's time for a Spelling Bee story!

Spelling Bee started off in Zone 3 (I'm in Zone 2). He didn't get along with their ATL, and their TL was too lazy to do anything. Spelling Bee told supervision that their ATL, a woman, would walk up behind him in the break area and rub his shoulders and flirt with him. That was a lie. In reality he had a problem with women in leadership positions.

So they moved him to Zone 1, the zone adjacent to my zone (technically my zone was so big it touched every zone, but I shared the most midway with Zone 1). Zone 1's leaders were both women, and that only lasted about a week. They decided to move him to my crew. I was known as the make-or-break TL because I enforced the rules and actually cared about the job.

I'd heard plenty about this kid, so I went on the defensive right away. I knew he liked to goof off, and I wanted to make it clear that there would be none of that on my crew.

Oh, he thought he could fool me.

On his first day on the crew, he came into the break area and told me he left his keys in Zone 1's break area. I let him go get them on the condition that he swept to the break area and came back within 15 minutes.

He didn't come back. My manager called me over the radio. I called him on the phone, and he told me he saw Spelling Bee walking around the parking lot (NOT within our zone. Actually, not a zone at all). He actually got in his car and just sat there, according to my manager.

When Spelling Bee was told to come back to our break area after a long talk with the manager and supervisors, I told him that I don't tolerate stupidity and that he should get the job done.

He never took me seriously.

All these stories sound crazy awesome. I guess it isn't that hard to get a job at CP if they hire idiots like Spelling Bee.

No, I don't think it's wrong. I've got good stories, too. I'm just telling stories, that's all.

Also, when you're the boss of these people and they don't do any work at all (and run around behind your back trying not to work), I think that gives me some freedom to tell stories of them.

The fools like Spelling Bee put themselves in that position, so I think Chip (or anyone) can talk about them.

I can still remember a few stories about Chip from way back when we were roomates. I probably shouldn't tell those stories though.

As a manager myself, I feel if my employees fail, i am a failure cause i am responsible for them. You should feel that way too.

But if they are an unfixable idiot, you can't exactly help that can you? If they fail, and it's not your fault, you shouldn't feel like you failed.

Really? What are you a manger of, I'm curious. One of the things I learned early on in life is that even if you're responsible for people, you can't make them responsible. You can encourage them, provide incentives, etc., but if they're determined to be lazy, irresponsible, or just plain stupid, then there isn't anything you can do about it. Except make sure that they get the point or get rid of them. And you can't take that personally, because if you do the only one you're hurting there is yourself since, quite frankly, they don't care.

And personally, I"m enjoying it. Especially with having to put up with so many of the people like this myself in various spots over the years. If anything, it might help those reading the boards here to realize how incredibly bad they look if they do the same thing. And to let them know they're not getting away with it or as sly as they think they are.

Let me ask you this... have you EVER worked with the public at all?

If yes then you are entitled to your opinion I guess, if no then go and try it out!

I work for a large bank and I've worked with some great people over my 14 years and I've also worked with idiots that I have no idea how they got a job at a financial institution!

You are entitled to your opinion, but I totally disagree with you. There are some people that you will run into in life that no matter how hard you work with them they will always choose to be lazy idiots. You can't change them and it's not your fault if they don't change.

ok bw freak, you talk about being all religious yet you agree with making fun of people? In my all 3 years of managing i have been able to take the worst employee and make them into on of my best. I like to take on challenges. You know chip your terrible employees might have felt like you were a doushbag and did not care however they did their job.

As long as i earned my employees respect which i have always done, i have had no problems.

^ Dude...please get off your high horse.

Just because you had a good experience as a manager doesn't mean that it's going to be universal.

And as far as being religios goes, Chip is telling funny stories about real-life things that went on.

I don't see how that is bad. Funny things happen all the time in real life. Does it make it wrong for him to post the stories? I don't see how it could be.

Really dude. You need to stop being so hyper-sensative to anything someone says to you.

I believe that you should love everyone, but that doesn't mean I LIKE everyone. Even Jesus got mad. He got mad at people that acted like idiots and mis-treated his people. I am the same way.

The Bible also says "If a man will not work, he shall not eat." It doesn't get much plainer than that.

Please stay out of my thread if you want to derail it. This will be my last post on this matter. The rest will be stories and answering questions. I advise everyone else to stay out of it so we can stay on the topic of fun and funny stories.

That's really cool that you've turned people around. What you seem to fail to realize is that a lot of these people go in expecting NOT to work. They're surrounded by roller coasters, and they're fresh out of high school. They think it's all fun and games. They're not looking to make a career out of this, nor are they looking for a promotion. They want to have a blast, get drunk every night and make money. They're seriously not here to work.

Though I try to motivate them, sometimes I have to discipline them. Some I did straighten out, but some I could not change.

With that, I'd like people to request a story about someone. Tell me the name, and I'll tell a story!

I do feel for you. I have been in management in one way shape or form for 18 years and recently I have been in an area that just seems to breed people who don't care at all... Like you said they want to party. I have actually had people brag to me that the county I work in was ranked #2 in alcoholics per capita in the nation...What a thing to be proud of... People come in late, don't do work, lie, and try to steal you blind, but when discipline is handed out on a very light basis they get pissed off and try to get other people to leave with them... As a manager you can ask people to do things, you can show them how it is done, and you can give guidance. A manager can't manage to get someone who doesn't want to work to work untill they change their mind...
