| | | Roller Coaster (The Movie) Just watched the movie Rollercoaster. It is a pretty good movie about a guy who blows up roller coasters and is asking for this ransom...it was good, it had helen hunt when she was like 10 in it. Anyways, i had a few questions for those who had or evne hadn't seen it:
1. in the movie, the first coaster targeted is The Rocket at Ocean View Amusement Park. I doubt Ocean view is fictional, because they thanked them at the end of the credits. I also got the drift that it was a pier type park in california...could be wrong. Yet, neither the rocket or ocean view amusmeent park come up on RCDB...anyone?
2. In the movie, the finale coaster is Revolution. The movie was filmed in 1977, so Revolution was already open, but they made it seem like opening day (actually it was very interesting to see the park with just revolution and goldrusher....back then revolution didnt have any tree cover so you could see the entire twistin white track. also, now viper and more recently X along with a slew of trees cover revolution. in the movie, u can see all of revolution from the parking lot, it was crazy) Anyways, so i was saying they made it look like opening day and i wanted to know if the following was true:
1. MM publicized the event extensively
2. Revolutions full name is the great american revolution
3. revolution opened on july 4th
4. they had a giant celebration for opening
Thanks, and if anyone could answer all that....that would be cool.

| | | I would assume that Magic Mountain publicized it's opening extensively because it was the first modern roller coaster to have a vertical loop. It's true that it was opened as The Great American Revolution, but they shortened the name to Revolution later. I bet they had a giant celebration for its opening, it was the first coaster with a vertical loop, I mean, what's not to celebrate there? I'm not entirely sure about it opening on the 4th of July, but I do sort of recall reading that somewhere else.

| | | Ocean View park was based in Norfolk, Virginia and went out of buisness just before the movie was made, so the owners of the park gave them permission to blow up the rocket.

Don't be so sure...It took no dynamite to bring down the WTC's. In the right places (structural engineers help me out) a well place bit of C4 could bring down any coaster...

absolutely. taking down the entire coaster would be next to impossible (due to the fact it has a layout), but taking down a significant portion of it would be easy. just wrap dynamite around three of the supports and whammo--there goes the lift hill. but then there's the question of getting the explosives on site.

| | | it'd be relatively easy to execute such an attack at a theme park, just not when people are on or the park's open. but to sneak into the park at night with some explosives and take out a few supports--that'd be quite simple.

| | | I thought the movie was very entertaining, but maybe that's only because I'm into coasters so much. Still, quite a good watch. I was also quite shocked with how different PKD looked in the movie from when I visited it last month. It's impossible to get many good shots of Rebel Yell (I love taking pictures of coasters) in the present day, but back then you could walk all around the coaster! Anyway, fun movie. |

| | | I love Rollercoaster. It's neat to see parks back in the day. Just like the Brady Bunch when they go to PKI.

| | | The movie is good, except for when the bad guy gets hit by the coaster at the end, yes this was in the 70's (60's?) but they could've done a little better job--it was SOOOOO fake.
