Well, EUROPEAN countries, not every country (unless if I'm missing something and we're converting to Euros over here too? :))

I dunno if it's gonna work, I don't think many people are that willing to switch over, from what I've heard. A very interesting idea, and one editorial pointed out that a common currency was what fused all the american colonies together into what's now the US, so maybe we'll see a big country called Europe or something...

Personally I think it's a great shame that Europe is merging into one big superpower. Im glad that England hasn't joined the Euro as of yet because the whole Euro thing is a very big step to take with huge consequences if it fails.

Another reason I feel that the Euro is bad thing is because I believe that the pound is one of the only things that distinguishes England from Europe and the same with the other currencies. At midnight last night, 12 countries lost their national identities.......they lost the Deutschmark, the Franc, the Drachma, the Peseta, the Lira, the Punt, the Escudo, the Guilder, the Markka, the Schilling, the Belgian Franc and the Luxembourg Franc. All of these patriotic symbols lost to a currency whose coins will give 1 out of 7 people eczema on their hands......that's tens of millions of people we are talking about.

I know that the Euro will make business deals and going to other countries much easier, but I would rather Europe was a continent, not a country.....I've been to many European countries.....Portugal, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Greece, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland......and I loved each for it's individuality and I feel that's being taken away from them.

Sorry for sounding like an overly patriotic old man, but it's something that I'm really against and I'll just have to hope Tony Blair doesn't go and spoil it for all of us....

I think I'll go and take a chill pill now, lol.

Well, one half of what you said is probably true! Of course it matters; 300 million people will now use the same currency, without having to change money all the time when they travel. Not to mention the fact that the Euro will soon rival the dollar in global economic terms, now that 12 countries economies' are tied together.

I'm just disappinted that Britain (again) is missing the boat. I accept Rob's points above, and do agree with most of them. However, the pace of change in Europe is now unstoppable, IMHO, so we would be far better off swallowing our pride and joining rather than risk far worse economic consequenses by not doing so.

I agree with Andy, i think it was a big mistake to not join this year. I don't see how each country will lose it's identity - it takes a lot more than a single currency. The only way the uk can compete with northen europe is by being part of it, if you like it or not. Why wouldn't it work anyway? it works in the US, thats all the same money, and some areas are poorer and some richer. It'll happen anyway whatever - unless the conservatives get into power, but if they do that they'll mess everything up anyway so it dosn't really matter.

When I went to France last summer, I liked the Euro much more than the franc, mainly becasue it was almost equal to a dollar.

The euro will definatley make it easier when my family travels in Europe. It got so annoying having to change the currency in every country we came to. Although I think Britain should have adopted the euro themselves.

I think the Euro was a great idea. There are so many countries in Western Europe and if you are a tourist it helps you out a lot. CNN said that .88 Euros is equal to one dollar so it is a strong currency. If the dollar worked in the US the Euro should work.
