| | | The AFI awards Did anyone watch the AFI (American Film Institute) awards? They had best films, actors, actresses, TV shows, and other stuff. I think it was the first time they had this award show on TV and they seemed a little unprepared for that. There were parts when people stood up there, tripped over words, got cut off by music, or almost announced the winners before the nominees were said. It was kinda funny but it was a bit embarassing since I like the AFI. I didn't catch all of it, but it was cool. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring won best picture and a lot of the nominees for stuff were barley in theaters or not in theaters yet. I found it strange that films could win awards before anyone has seen them.

| | | It's good to see Man Who Wasn't There, Memento, and Royal Tenenbaums win something. As for the rest, I disagree with the choices.

| | | I think it'd be very hard to beat the digital effects award that was given to LOTR. The seamless way they made the hobbits look small was excellent.

| | | While I'm not a fan of AFI, it's weird how they have said their name means many things. I've heard FROM THE BAND that it means a bunch of F*%*ing idiots, asking for it, and now a fire inside. I think they made them all up. Anyway, I was pleased with most of the awards, especially that Lord of the Rings won. Memento would have been nice, however, for best picture also :) |

| | | Re: The AFI awards well, all of the movies were at least released in a limited run, that's the only way they qualify. they winning films were determined by a panel of jurists that ranged from movie critics to academics to producers.
as for LOTR winning the digital effects awards, i simply couldn't beleive it. don't get me wrong, i greatly enjoyed the movie (definately a top ten of the year), but it had the worst digital effects of the year, not the best. all of the effects shots were grainy and dark, classic signs of 'smudging' the screen to lessen the appearance of digital effects. (think GODZILLA and the rain).
also, i don't feel it deserved the film of the year award. like i said, its wonderful, but i can think of four films that deserved it more: Muholland Drive, In the Bedroom, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Man Who Wasn't There--and there are a few others i saw that deserved it more. oh well.

| | | I saw it. I liked that they recognized some really great films. I'm not sure about LOTR as best of the year. I personally pulling for Memento or Mulholland Drive. Even though The Man Who Wasn't There had stunning cinematography and great style, it was one of the MOST BORING films I've seen in a long time. The Royal Tenenbaums was good as well. I've got In The Bedroom and Monster's Ball high on my must see list.
