The SACD

The SACD (that's super audio compact disc) is a new method of music pioneered by Sony and Philips. It is like a standard CD, only with 5 channels instead of CDs sterio sound with 2 channels. Here is a recent email i sent to the RIAA:

I would just like to say that the RIAA is doing to little, to late to prevent piracy, you might come out with SACD's, but there is really no market for them, with the digital revolution and free music available to anyone with a cable modem. The SACD is not going to make people happy because they want to take the songs they like, put them on a mp3 player and go. The SACD can't do that (from what I know) and will do no better than a CD other than from people with a SONY DVD player, with SACD capabilities. Even if the SACD does make it, most people will just head to the internet and download it, even with the anti-piracy measures, hackers around the world will almost instantly break any code and the music will be available on the internet. People love their CDs, and like the fact you can go on the computer and make your own discs or playlists on an mp3 player. With Windows XP, you can (burn cds without a burner). With an SACD, you are stuck with the two or three songs you like and a crapload of bad songs (see blink 182) So with SACD, you can't (customize your songs and playlists). People will rise against the SACD because of the imcapabilities and with the copyright protection, it will be hacked anyway, so why not stick with the most successful investment of all time, the CD? Even with the 5 channels, can you really tell the difference with 2 speakers? You need a BOSE sound system to tell the difference. The SACD has a long way to go, probably too far to go. The CD can do (almost) everything the SACD can, and even more, so until the SACD can be played on a CD-Rom drive, I'll stick with my CD's (don't bother with DVD-A either, they are a waste of money and are not portable, making them terrible) Until the SACD can be used on a PC, its worthless to most fans.

I know almost anything about them (and DVD-A, so feel free to ask. but I want to know what you think?

Ok, i have a question - They sound almost identical to DVD-A 's to me, is there any difference apart from the machine used to read them? they both have about 5 channels don't they? smae quality?

I agree with you they sound so pointless, no ones going to bother with dvd-a (its so expensive and will takes ages to be portable and cheap) in their homes, why do they need another standard?

It's true that people want better quality and more music on one disc but with CD's are easily good enough for most people.

Yes, the DVD-A is nearly identical to the SACD, except the DVD-A can play videos if on a DVD player, these new medians are both pointless
