| | | Patton was always my favorite. It wasnt as gory as Saving Private Ryan, but you could still sense the intensity of war and wat really goes on in training and during the war and the officers you have to deal with.

| | | Frankly, I'm not into war movies all that much -- too much glorification of causes that at least half the participants disagree with. But to choose, I'd say Braveheart -- not an American war, certainly, but a superbly done movie with a generous historical accuracy considering the time period at hand. The book is better, though. :)

| | | "The Longest Day" I've always been a big John Wayne fan so I'll have to say "The Longest Day". "Patton" is another one of my favorites.

Of course I'll also say Apocalypse Now, but that seems like so, so much more than a war movie.

| | | Gettysburg is the best movie, its sorta long, but the greatest with Martin Sheen as Robert E. Lee, and realistic too.

| | | I would definately have to say "The Great Escape" with Steve McQueen. That is a great movie with great acting. Definitely my pick.

| | | HBO's Band of Brothers is the best World War II movie ever. However, it is a ten-hour-long miniseries, so I don't know if that counts for this topic.
Other than that, The Thin Red Line. It shows the realistic conditions of men at war, but it doesn't do it in a way where you see a pile of intestines lying next to a guy and say, "well damn, that's realistic." Also, every single one of the main characters, who were mostly played by big-name actors such as Nick Nolte, Jim Caviezel (though he wasn't big yet), John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Sean Penn, Elias Koteas, Ben Chaplin and others were able to rise out of their other roles, so you don't see them as other characters they've played in other movies, only their character in this one (which is the advantage of hiring mostly currently no-name actors like Band of Brothers did). Acting was superb, cinematography, the location, everything. The plot follows a company through the Battle of Guadalcanal in their struggle to capture first Hill 210 and then other hills, nothing else. It allows you to see what the war was like without having to focus too much on a story.
And don't compare it to Saving Private Ryan. Just because it came out the same year does not mean it is anything like Saving Private Ryan. Both are fantastic movies (TTRL is better, though) that are good in their own ways. Saving Private Ryan's opening D-Day sequence is nothing short of amazing, but after that first half hour it loses everything. TTRL never loses a thing. People think that just because TTRL came out a few weeks after SPR and because Spielberg directed SPR, it is a "ripoff" of SPR, even though they were both in production at the same time and except that they both deal with WW2 (different theaters of WW2, at that), they are not the same at all. And how can TTRL be a "ripoff" of SPR when it was written almost 40 years before SPR? Yes, TTRL was a novel written by James Jones, author of From Here To Eternity, and it is an amazing book and I suggest you read it.
Sorry for that. I like war movies.
Other good ones:
Braveheart, obviously. As good as you can get with realistic medieval combat -- although the Battle of Stirling in the movie is quite different than the Battle of Stirling which took place in real life. In the movie Wallace used long spears to kill the English cavalry as it charged, but in reality no such thing happened. And in reality, the English cavalry and infantry had to advance over a bridge to get to the rebels, and in the movie there was no bridge. But there was a budget. It makes the movie no less amazing.
Black Hawk Down portrayed extremely realistic modern combat but that's all it portrayed. Except for the first part before they went into the town, the whole damn movie is a long battle. I love battle scenes but BHD took it too far. You can't just have a giant battle for the movie. You need other stuff. And while BHD had a good (and true) plot, it just became annoying after a while. Still good, though.
Platoon. Just an extremely good movie. I'm getting tired so I'm gonna end it here, but that's all you really have to say about Platoon. Extremely good. Again, portrayed realistic combat, this time in the Vietnam setting. My favorite of all the big mid-to-late 1980s Vietnam movies (which also include Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill, and Casualties of War). Also, Tigerland is a good Vietnam-related movie. |

| | | Shut my mouth, I totally forgot about Glory. I show that movie to my American History classes (rated R and everything - bring your permission slip because I'm not going to be sued for your sake...), and it's a marvelous Civil War rendition of the Massachusetts 54th black regiment. Definately illustrates the prejudice and discrimination, with superb acting throughout, and also shows that the good guys don't always prevail! Excellent score as well, and I have the soundtrack too.
