| | | I don't care too much for soccer, but the World Cup is different. It's more popular internationally than the Olympics. Anyone interested in playing the Yahoo!/FIFA World Cup Pick'em fantasy game? I can create a private group for just coasterforum members. Post if interested and I'll make a group.

| | | USA will stink up the World Cup once again(the only team not to make it out of the first grouping on home turf). France has a good chance I think. I will also join the group.

| | | My predictions are up there. Come on everyone, it only takes a couple of minutes and its free.
I'd love to see England do well this time but I'm fully prepared for another disappointment.
All the usual suspects are going to be thereabouts. France, Argentina and Italy must be favourites. Portugal look like a great side, which is bad news for the USA who are in the same group.
Ireland may well get through the group stage even without Keane.

| | | Well my predictions have got off to a bad start but I suppose nobody thought Senegal would beat the World and European champions, france.
Just shows that everyone has a chance.

| | | mmmmkay, I'm gonna play the Ignorant American here and ask some stupid questions:
How does the World Cup work? Is it a tournament-style event, or what? Cause I thought since France lost, they were gone. But I guess not. Also, why only every four years? And, how does the whole system work? That is, is there only one team per country, and how do they pick? What's the general structure of the world soccor/football leagues?

| | | The World Cup is divided into two segments. First, there are eight groups of four, and in each group there is a round-robin setup (Each team plays three games against the other three). A team gets 3 points for a win, 1 for a tie, and 0 for a loss. The top two in each group advance to a 16-team single elimination bracket, and the last team standing is the winner.
I don't know why it is every 4 years, but that is partly why this worldwide is considered more popular than the Olympics.

The World Cup is contested by national teams. Each squad is made up of the best 23 players from each individual country and can be selected from any team, worldwide. But obviously all the USA players have to be American! Claudio Reyna, the USA captain, plays for Sunderland in England.
Most countries have a domestic league just like in most other sports, where teams play each other week in, week out over the course of a season.
The US league is Major League Soccer. You can find more info at www.mlsnet.com.

| | | I woke up early this morning to catch the Germany vs Saudi Arabia game. What a great game played by Germany beating Saudi 8-0! One more goal by the german side and they would have tied the record of biggest margin win in World Cup History.
Anyways about the Senegal vs France game, no one can rule out the 3 African nations. Senegal played a very discipline game against France and just wanted to win more in their win-win situation. It was their first World Cup ever and they beat the defending World and European Champions in their first World Cup game. Now that is an acheivement. I hate France anyways so I'm happy.
