Buying a Scanner

I'm looking for a decent scanner, unfortunately, I am technically illiterate in this sort of thing so I need some advice! :D I don't want to spend $$$$$ but I'll go over $100 if it's a good thing. What I'm wanting to know is what to look for -- the "dpi" I know is dots per inch -- so more = better, right? At what point doesn't it really matter? I'm likely to not really be printing these scans (though it might be a possibility), and I am fairly good at retouching photos and so forth with graphics programs, so it doesn't have to be perfect. They would be color, of course. Any particular brand name I ought to focus on?

My computer is a Gateway though getting up there in age (3 years, ancient for a computer), and our printer is a similarly older HP inkjet, though I'm pleased with both quality and performance of both machines.

So, please advise! Brand names, things to look for, price ranges for quality equipment, etc... Thanks! :)

I've got a really good scanner. It's a Visioneer 6100 and we got it for only $80. It came with some software and it scans things crystal clear. I think the scanner recognizes 68 billion colors (I may be exaggerating. It may only be 68 million), but that's a buncha colors. It scans pretty quickly and it uses USB ports, so it's pretty simple stuff. I like it and I'd think about it. There are bound to be cheaper ones, though. Have fun! :)

it might be that much but it's pointless since your eyes can only see around 16 million different colours. of course there is a infinate range of actual colours.

I just a mid-range cannon. It's better to get one that dosn't take up a lot of desk space. And make sure it's usb too.

I don't own a scanner myself, but I think you should be able to buy a good scanner for under $100. Here is a list of some of Best Buy's scanners and prices, and I personally think they are kind of high.

Hope this helps :)
