| Professional Sports Boycott
I hereby am boycotting all professional sports whose players get paid outrageous wages just to play a stupid sport. This includes MLB, NFL, PGA, and NBA. Most hockey players don't get paid as much as well as other small sports like soccer, rugby, lacross, etc. So who's with me??? Comeon there much be some one out there besides me. *Cricket Cricket* O well I guess not. But seriously, please help me boycott perfessional sports, if we stop watching they will be forced to pay lower wages.

Sounds good. oh wait. I've never liked professional sports anyways. It's not even the games themselves...it's the importance people place on them and the ludacris amount of money these players make. I can't believe it when people, like say on the bus or something, read the sports section, and nothing else. How stupid. Or how they play "classic games" on cable now. Get a life. There are million other things that are great in life...like music, art, nature, philosophy, or....roller coasters. People whos lives revolve around sports...and nothing else are pathetic. And people like Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan are NOT gods, and should not be treated as such. The REAL heroes in the world are teachers. Teachers don't get the praise they should. They have incredibly hard jobs, and get paid a pittance (compared to sports "heroes"). O.K...I'll get off my soapbox now. |

Last I checked, the PGA does not send you a check if you don't play.

Ok, not the PGA, even though some of those guys get paid outrageous sums of money (Tiger Woods, even thought I admire him as a golfer).

In terms of those in pro sports, the pros I respected weren't the highest paid... they didn't have egos that they were the best, yet they played for the game, and whatever money they earned they tried to help others out. I can name at least three good NFL players... Chris Spielman, Ty Hallock, and Mitch Lyons... all great players I had the chance to meet. They have all since retired, but I remember them more for what they did off the gridiron, and not for their stats. Others like Kobe or Alex Rodriguez... they need a reality check. Also, I wouldn't count the Detroit Red Wings among those who are greedy... they play their hardest. While the team may have the biggest payroll, none of them are the highest paid... in fact some have even taken a cut just to be a part of the team. They also have a drive that I have not seen in any other team... and it all goes back to just after the 1997 Stanley Cup where they lost Vladamir Konstantinov and their trainer to a nasty accident (leaving both of them with permanent brain damage), plus they do genuinely play for the fans of Hockeytown. Where else is a hockey team so much a part of the community as Detroit... good times or bad?

Yes, but the point is he earns that money (excluding promotional deals and contracts). Some of the pots on the PGA have swelled in recent years, but we can rest assured that the best player always takes home the top prize, and nearly half the field will walk away with nothing. Talk about competition. Such is not the case with other sports, where players are paid despite the quality of performance.

Are you going to boycott all musical stars because they get paid a fortune just for singing? Are you going to boycott all movies because Harrison Ford makes $20 million per picture? Are you going to boycott all fast food joints because the CEO's of those companies make a fortune? We are in a free market society. If I could get paid $10 million or more for acting or singing you can bet your a$$ I am going to do it.

Hmm, I'll boycott every sport except Tennis. Yeah, they get paid a lot of money, but its not as much as football or baseball players and they work twice as hard (a fat person playing professional tennis: never happens. Fat person playing baseball: happens all the time).

thank you!! someone agrees with me. sports players are not the only people that get paid a lot of money. good sports players easily have more talent then a good amount of actors. i think its fine that they get paid all that money. this goes with movie actors and atheletes - if people pay $8 to see a movie or $40 to go to a baseball/basketball/football game then what do you want them to do with the money. do you want the owner/director to keep all the millions and millions of money? its just like a normal buisness, if the buisness makes more money, they pay their workers more. thats why there was going to be a baseball strike. they werent going to strike because all the people that dont know what is really happening and saying that they are overrpaid crybabies who just wants more money. they were going to strike because the teams were making a lot of money and the owners werent paying them the right percentage of the income of the money. what if you were working for a buisness doing all the work to make the money and you were only making 100K a year while the buisness was bringing in $200 million. i love professional sports and i have to stick up for it, and everyone else have to get their facts straight.

Most athletes are great people in professional sports, who use their fame to help others. Some don't/or do bad things, and they recieve all of the attention. Pro Sports isn't as bad as you think. Just for the record, I do think they are overpaid. College is still better, though.
Originally posted by BryanWood Just for the record, I do think they are overpaid.
jeez, are actors overpaid? are CEO's of major companies overpaid? is anyone that gets more than $5 million a year overpaid? the answer is no. it sports works the same as buisnesses, movies, and record contracts. if they bring in more money, they earn more money. again, as i said in my last post, what the hell are they supposed to to with $200 million? they have to pay it to someone, and those people are the players, and its just like a normal buisness, the better workers(or in this case, players) earns more money. they would be overpaid if the team made $200 million and the payroll for the team is somewhere around $190 million, but payrolls are averaged in the $60 million so they are not overpaid.

I'd much rather watch Virginia Tech than the Dallas Cowboys, and I like Virginia better than the Chicago Bulls or Washington Wizards (I never knew about that team until Jordan started playing for them).

I'd be with this if it were just about players like A-Wad and such, but really, there's a lot of good honest players out there that work their butts off every day of the year and twice as hard during the season that don't demand the very high wages. Some of them just aren't as good all around, but will put in twice the heart. Joe Girardi for instance of the Cubs, he's a great defensive catcher, but offensively he hasn't hit above .250 much in his entire career (some very good exceptions though), but he puts his all out there, and he could actually ask for more than he actually gets. There's an awful lot of players that actually do put up the numbers out there and don't ask for a whole lot of money. On the other hand, here comes Shaquille O'Neal who gets paid millions and millions for sitting under one hoop, then running over to under the other hoop every 25 seconds. IMO, it's not right at all, but you can't penalize those who actually are honest hard working people earning what they make just because all the bad apples in there.

Yo SHUT UP. It's my opinon and don't diss it. one, this isn't about actors, dentists, singers or attorneyes. if it was, actors should be paied lower, singers and attorneyes too. doctors in canada don't make a great living, PLUS they SAVE YOUR LIFE, so they deserve to get paied a lot. Two, the reason sports teams bring in $200,000,000 is because of the exorbinate amout of money you pay to seem them. eg. to see the Vancouver Canucks play, a lower bowl seat costs over $90 a person!! if it their wages weren't so high, maybe we could go to games for cheaper. The same goes for lawyers, singers and actors. movie ticket prices would drop, lawyers would be cheaper and cds would be cheaper, that would lower the whole file sharing thing. Theres more than what meets the eye, so i think you should get your eyes checked.

natelox, thats what im saying. we the people pay the baseball players their salery. how many sports games have you been at in the past few years? if you dont want them getting paid that much, dont pay for their tickets and their merchandise. stadiums could sell out a lot of their games(the goods teams) so they are able to pay more. the only way to lower their salerys is to have a country wide fan strike. but untill then, i could care less how much they get paid. their saleries should really be kept private just like your parents saleries!

i hardly EVER go to games, cause they cost to much. I KNOW they can sell out a stadium at the current prices, BUT, that money could be much better spent on things, like feeding the poor (in the city and africa), findign a cure for aids, building homeless shelters, paying off the governments debt (cnd) etc....

about ^...well put. Nate, if you rarely ever go to see the pros...how about the minor leagues? AAA, AA, A for Baseball. ECHL and IHL for Hockey. And there really aren't "minor leagues" for the other sports. They all have affordable tickets. I don't know if I mentioned this in an earlier post, but Professional Bowlers are UNDERPAID. Next time the PBA or PWBA comes to town, check them out. $15 to see the televised finals is very affordable. Or for something free, check out a collegiate bowling tourney. I used to be a collegiate bowler and the tourneys both as a player/fan were great.
