Solo & Ensemble

This is for all of the musicians out there. Has anyone heard of solo and ensemble, or do you have a similar program at your school? I play string bass, but people in band/orchestra/choir can compete in it. Or anyone else that wants to enter. But basically, you play a solo for a judge, and you get graded on a letter scale. If you get an A* then you get to go to state. We also have a large ensemble where our orchestra plays together. The competition is this weekend. So I was wondering if all states do this and if you are competing, or if it is just a Wisconsin thing.

I used to do these, but after a few years I stopped because I realized that they are basically pointless, since you're only competing against yourself. Some people like to do that and evaluate themselves, but not me. I already know I'm a decent drummer, so I just feel its a waste of time. Also, this is something that usually comes with taking private lessons, and I stopped taking those too.

We have solo and ensamble here too, and if I remember correctly, like marching, the scale is poor, fair, good, excellent, superior. If you get a "good," you are laughed off of the field (or the gymnasium, depending on which you are doing).

Yeah, we have ISSMA solo and ensemble for solos and groups as big as 4. I did it in jr high but our grading system worked differently. Each group or soloist was graded on a scale of 1-10. But its just kinda of a thing for fun, whether a group gets a ten or not doesn't determine whether you go to state. Its just basically a rating to tell you how good you are.

We have a UIL Solo and Ensemble down here that I did last weekend. Ours has 3 different piece classes. 1 being most difficult, 3 being least difficult. You then get graded 1-5, 1 being the best. If you have the piece memorized and you get a 1, you can go on to state. I got a 1 on a class one song, but didnt play from memory, although I could. Of course, it was a 10 hour wait for 5 minutes of playing. A whole saturday wasted.

Of course! We got two "Bands" which are the Wind Ensamble, and our very own Jazz Ensamble. I am going to be in the jazz, I'm picking up the tenor sax so I can get in. I can't wait either, it looks like a lot of fun. The jazz teacher at our school ( he as well teaches other bands) is very nice and a great guy to be around.

My school has Solo & Ensemble. I'm not in it, but I think the competition was two weeks ago but was cancelled due to big snowstorm that weekend, so I don't know when they re-schedualled it for.
