Guitar Question

How hard is it to learn electric guitar? I've been wondering because I really wnat to learn to play an instrument because my music knowledge has gone to waste so far. I know how to read music and I understand all the other music type "stuff," I just haven't learned to play an instrument. I would appreciate it if someone that plays guitar could help.

Thanks!:)

I play guitar. It's not too bad if you practice a lot and get lessons, neither of which I do, so I still suck. But you should definately pick it up. Or better yet, start drumming. It's a lot harder to find a drummer for a band than it is to find a guitarist. You will be more wanted if you drum.

Well, my band kinda wanted me to learn guitar so I could play second guitar while I sang, so I started to think about doing it. I still don't know if I'll actually try it though.

I just want to say that for me, personally, lessons were a complete waste of the time. I taught myself pretty much everything I know and its been great. You can go at your own pace, because some people don't pick up on things quite as quickly or get nervous at lessons or whatever. I'd say, basically, it's a lot of memorization, like any other instrument. Theres thousands of different chord shapes and stuff to go through, but I'd say that if you have some kind of musical knowledge, you shouldn't have that much of a problem with guitar, it just takes awhile to get used to moving your fingers around and putting them in, many times, awkward positions. But I'd reccomend to definetly give it a shot, but more importantly, stick it through cause the world always needs a guitar player.

Well, if you can sing, then I'd say pick up guitar. It's even harder to find a decent singer than it is to find a drummer. I think that trock has a point, that if you are generally good at learning stuff on your own, then you definately can do it by yourself. My uncle never took a lesson in his life and hes one of the best guitar players I know. I, on the other hand, would rather have someone tell me what to do because for some reason when I try and learn on my own it doesn't work out too well. Okay, I'm done talking now.

*ahem* waits for Bimmer to invite slipknot to come sing for his band...

anywho, guitar takes a lot of work...but as said before, teach yourself, and be patient. I however am not patient, so I sold my guitar and picked up a microphone...and found my thing.... you should find your thing...it could be drums, guitar, singing...whatever. Singing comes naturally to me because I like to be the center of attention and like writing.

If you decide to teach yourself, buy a good book-don't use the Internet. There's so much bull waste on the net right now that you'll never learn anything.

Um...actually do use the internet and not books. Most easy songs are on the internet and in TAB form rather than music form. TAB is WAAAAAAY easier to learn and you will be content with it until you can read sheet music. The easiest songs I know that I learned first are Blind, by Korn....Brain Stew by Green Day, The Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson, and ANY Nirvana song. Look those up and keep at it.

I meant as an actual guide to learn how to play, not for specific songs.

Everyone knows that tabs are easy to use, but don't try to get the basics from BillyBobsGuitarGuide.com

well, I say, if you have the money, pick up a drum set. It is probaly the easiest (and most fun) to get a hang of....but be warned...a good drum set will cost ya at least 3000 bucks...as well as replacing equipment when it breaks...which is often....

We already have a drummer, and that doesn't really appeal to me. Plus, I'm the singer.

If you want to try it, and if you have the money,do it.

You're never going to look back and go, "Gee, I wish I had never tried to play guitar".

Well, unless your guitar attacks you and breaks your legs off, but that's very rare.

I have the money, its just that I don't what to spend it, and then not be able to do it, or not like it. Thats why I'm still thinking.

I really haven't looked at any in particular, I just pretty much scanned the ones in my price range, which is up to $250 for the guitar. My friend told me an amp to get, so I don't have to worry about that.

Well, it is much better to get a crappy guitar and a really good amp then a good guitar and a really bad amp. An expensive amp with effects can make you sound like a guitarist god no matter your skill level.

Yea, definitely true... I just started playing guitar recently, and it's a lot of fun. I was in the same position as you, I had the money and everything, but I didn't know whether or not I really wanted to do it. But, I did and I've been teaching myself. I'm really glad I did it.

Yeah, but that's exactly why modern rock music sucks. Too many power chords, too many effects not enough raw talent.

My friend has a electro guitar. I would say it wouldn't be too hard. The ampage is what you would proabobly have some trouble getting used to. YOu could play a string and the amp might support some loud sound, that maybe you arent used to since the guitar doesn't amplify it's own sound. An acoustic is loads of fun, truthfully. I would go for an acoustic. Get an electric once you get good. Because theres nothing worse then a smart mouthed, little freshman with crappy guitar skills and a awesome guitar... (Bimmer.....................)

Oh right. You are a bimmer! Sad enough. Umm. Like I said, Acoustic is easier to learn with, and it's easier on your ears as well as your parents. I mean, imagine yourself sucking with a electric, and you suck. It will defenetley NOT be music to your ears. (Or as B&M wrote in my letter "It was a nice music to our ears") Oh well, they make awesome coasters, so they can be pros at one thing!

Anyway, bust out a acoustic.

Sometimes crappy guitars sound awesome (White Stripes).... So don't think that you have to buy the nicest guitar ever. But if you want a cool guitar, go with an acoustic with pickups.

Jack White plays a $1500 Gibson hollow body sometimes too.

I got two words for you..."Drop D"
Yeah I know it sounds lame, but its the easiest way to get started and get going right away, you can pick up the harder guitar stuff later.

Oh, and Ibanez has some pretty good guitars out right now between the 200 and 300 dollar range.

Well, I've been researching and i'm pretty sure I'll be getting an electric(sorry Raptordude;)) and I'm teaching myself with books and videos, and this cool software program I found. When I narrow down which guitars to buy I post them to see what you guys think.
