| | | 11/4/03 Don't forget to vote Today is voting day...
There's not much to vote on in my neighborhood---only the school levy and mayor's race (current mayor is running unopposed).
But still....the only vote that doesn't count is the vote that was never cast.
So if there's an election in your neighborhood, then go vote. After all, it's your right!! |

| | | I am still registered to vote in the town where I grew up (and my parents still live), but there weren't any tax increases to vote against, so I didn;t bother.

| | | I heard about the proposed Lakewood Project to kick residents out of their current home, tear those homes down for a mall and condos/townhomes. Sounds really *bright* to me.
Kent Mayor and a few other things were up, but just like Lucas County, those Yax Levies generally pass.

Eminent domain does have a role, but I vehemently believe that it should be used ONLY to provide space for a public good. New condos (to increase property tax revenue), new Wal-Marts, new malls... that's NOT what eminent domain is for. |

The Lakewood Project didn't pass, but barely---39 votes! I guess they'll have to find some hanging chads or something....
Ohio is one of the top users of Eminent Domain. |

| | | What on earth is "eminent domain"? It sounds like the sort of thing that I'd oppose on principle. :D

Totalitarian if you ask me.

They don't have to consider it blighted. They can take any land as long as they have probable cause.
Way back in 1991, my old school district tried to condemn a sportsman's club so they could build a new High School using eminent domain. A judge threw it out, needless to say. There was nothing wrong with the club, except for the fact that I didn't quite like it. I wouldn't have cared cuz that meant I could walk to school :). |

The interesting part of this is that under that designation, literally 95% of Lakewood would be considered blighted. It's a city where most of the houses are nearing 100 years old, so obviously they didn't have much use for 2 car garages back then. Even the mayor's house would be considered blighted by her own rules. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
