The starving student cooks!

What do you guys typically cook for meals if your folks aren't around to make or buy you dinner? I left for college a couple years ago and had to fend for myself. Late at night I'd have the munchies and break out ramen or a cup o noodles and cook that. Cook? OK, I'd heat up water and make the noodles soft. I know, it's lame, but it's food.

This year I'm living in an apartment. I was living on ramen and macaroni and cheese until I went shopping. I bought meat, beans, and other good stuff determined to cook some real food. I also got a George Foreman Grill for my birthday so I can cook up food really quick now.

I've made spaghetti and some awesome burritos so far. I'll be making heaps of other food with the supplies. My roommate has a vehicle now so we can actually go shopping and not worry about the bus!

So, what do you guys make when you're all by your lonesome?

I still live at home, so I can't completely relate.
But whenever my parents are away I rely on pizza pockets, 'cause I'm really lazy.

Although, give me a campfire, and I can whip up almost anything. I picked up a lot of awesome ideas and techniques for cooking while camping (even in -10C!), so I guess I can go out in the backyard and start chopping wood if I ever get desperate...

I have my own pad, but I generally cook the simple things. I'm looking into getting my dad's spaghetti sauce recipe and my mom's lasagna recipe though. Noodles are my specialty. Love pasta!

Well, while in school I either kept a meal plan (convenience), or learned to adapt with a microfridge. Now, I can do nearly anything: chicken fettucini, roasts, popcorn chicken, homemade fries, different varieties of roasted chicken, spaghetti, etc... Of course, ironically enough, tonight we're having Thanksgiving leftovers! :D Roasted chicken with gravy and dumplings, over rice. Mmm... Even better the second time around.

I usually cook whatever fits in the microwave. I tend to live of pizzas when my folks aren't there to cook for me. Or I go to my grandparents house to eat there. That works as well.. :)

It really depends on the funds and cooking supplies. Chicken fettucini alfrado is my favorite thing to make; however it can be expensive for a broke college student. Pastas and various grilled items are awesome. When the budget is tight I try for some varity such as ramen noodles, marcroni and cheese, bagels, and anything else I can find cheap. It gets worse at Cedar Point because there is pretty much only mircrowaves and toasters to cook with....

Chip, I have a lot of simple, inexpensive recipes. If you'd like any of them let me know. Some of them are perfect for the single guy on a budget. My brothers used these recipes when they were single and on their own.
Do you have any good pasta recipes or steak recipes?

i just have simple things, pasta things like that. Boring but easy and cheap. The cost of food never really bothered me, but its probably cause i don't eat much.

Well I’m not in the same situation (I’m still in high school) but I often cook myself food (mostly for lunch on days off). Anyways I usually just cook spaghetti, tomato soup, or popcorn when I’m too lazy to cook any of the others. :p

Soup is always my favorite to do, when by myself, or a frozen pizza.

I make dinner for myself a lot. I typically make frozen stuff or some Mac And Cheese. I can sometimes get creative and make something in the skillet, but that's rare. When I'm hungry, I want food fast. I find the shortest way to get something into my stomach.

Chip got the munchies? Oh god.....

When I'm home alone (which happens ALOT now) I usually cook hot dogs, hamburgers, or pizza (IMO, homemade pizza is alot better than that greasy Pizza Hut crap). :)

Well I vary between two delightful dishes. On the one hand I have the 15min Swanson Hungry-man pushed in the microwave. Or in desprete situations, I have the Banquet 2.5min Chicken Nugget Meal. I've consumed over 150 Banquet CN Meals and still counting.

I used to eat those ramen noodles all of the time. That was, until this one night in college, I was so high and drunk that I realized I ran out of water to make the noodles. So I had to put beer in a bowl, with the noodles, and microwave it. Needless to say, it tasted horrible, so I did the only intelligent thing I could come up with...FROOT LOOPS!! Yes, I put Froot Loops in the bowl with the noodles and beer, stirred it up, brought it all to a smooth noodly texture and it tasted great then, but it made me sick the next day. That was the last time I ate those noodles.

Why not to do drugs. . .

1. You'll end up eating beer soaked Ramen Noodles and Fruit Loops.

I can see the commercial for it now.

Getting back on topic,

I make food for myself a lot. I used to rely on Hot Pockets and PB&J's all the time. For some reason, I love to put Fish Sticks in the oven and eat them a lot. I'm a fan of the fish, what can I say?

Chip, with the Foreman grill, you can cook so much. Hamburgers, bratwurst and chicken breasts are great for the Foreman, tastes like they're fresh off the grill. Foreman's are great.

I usually make anything I can find in the Frige. I'm only 16 but I happen to be a great cook (of course with instructions and recipes). I usually try and make cheesesteaks, Chicken Parmesan, baked ziti, chicken noodle soup (homemade), pancakes, waffles (with a waffle maker) and when I am lazy i cook pocket pizzas. I'm not too big on pasta so I stay away from that.
