| | | Transportation of Whales Ok call me a idiot, but I was wondering. I was reading the news on the new Killer Whale for SFMW, and they said they loaned it to some Aquarium (uh?) in Ohio. They said they were bringing her back.
Which brings me to the point, how do they transport a whale? Those things are HUGE! Do they have a huge truck with water? Do they use a plane with water? Train with water? Ahhh I'm so confused!
You can call me a idiot if the answer is obvious, I just have no idea!

| | | If I remember correctly, a plane was used to transport the whale. I just saw something about this on TV not too long ago.

Its a little different moving a killer whale 15 miles across land than thousands of miles over an ocean....
But as Robert's link suggested, they basically load the whale into whatever transportation (in this case the plane being an obvious choice) and into either a large sling if it were to be a short journey (a la Free Willy), where spigots would keep the whale's skin wet long enough to keep it healthy for a short trip.
In this case however, being a 14 hour process, they made a "cradle" as they called it, basically a box filled with enough water to keep the whale somewhat comfortable enough to not have any health issues as a result. From what I saw on the news, (different report) it was basically a 20X15X10 fiberglass container.
Hope that somewhat answers your question.

| | | Frankly, I'm surprised that you didn't know how this is done. If any of you would have taken the time to study the documentary film, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, you would well know that you use specially reinforced plastic to enclose several levels of your Klingon Bird of Prey. The whales are then transported up from their habitat to the interior of ship. The ship then can either deliver them to thier proper location, or slingshot around the sun and into the future so that the calls of the whales can save all of humanity from an unnamed threat that speaks whalese.
Silly kids and your dumb questions.
;)

| | | To clear up some confusion on Kyle's part. The four dolphins, Jasmine, Sadie, Liberty and Brisbie, that were at SFWoA were on loan from SFMW. Shouka, the whale going to SFMW, is from Marineland Antibes on a long term loan to Six Flags. All of this was in the press release. As for how, It's been answered.
