Hurricane Ivan

We are here in Montgomery, Alabama .... and these are pics from 8:00 am outside of the house. I'll try to keep ya'll posted. Winds are expected to reach 70 mph sustained ... right now they are at about 50 with gusts over 60. Total storm time of the worst is expected to be 5 hours, and we have not begun the clock yet. The Weather Channel has live reports from here, so you can keep current as well. The winds are going to be immense here ....

New Orleans = pwned

Which is too bad, really. What will we ever do without mardi gras?

If that new one that starts with a J hits New Orleans after Ivan, they wiull have serious problems. Building a city below sea level wasn't exactly smart.

It's highly unlikely Jeanne will hit New Orleans. It's taking a North/Northwest track that will take it from Florida south or the Outer Banks north.

We got spared here in Lousiana, but Gulf Shores, AL (pretty much my second home) is gone. I've been talking with my friends down there and they say the surge was incredible. The entire Isalnd is underwater. I called my old boss and he said the store where I worked this summer isn't standing. I'm packing up to head down there and help my friends clean up. Should be interesting to see what's left down there.

Birdie ... any idea how Pass Christian, MS faired? How about Gulfport, MS? We have some interests there and I was wondering if you had heard anything.

From what I hear, Gulfport and that area faired alright. Some minor damage, but nothing like what happened east of there. My friend's sister in Biloxi said they came out just fine.

Some pics from the day ...

Around 7:00 am

9:20 am ... check out the tree leaning in the distance:

At 10am the flooding and driving rain has begun in full force.

Well, here is what the house and area around looks like afterwards. You can see, it ain't much. I did some light exploring and there are some small tree limbs down on base, but I hear the city really took a beating but it may be some time before we are ok'd to have a look ... if they let us off base at all. About 1/3 of the city is wihtout power ... we lost cable most of the day and internet for a out 2 hours. Lights flickered, but we never lost power.

Some shingles blown off:

A fence piece blown away:

Light top (pointed design) is gone:

As you can see ... nothing major at all, thankfully.
Now, what shall I do with all the water and extra supplies we bought??? You guessed it, store it for the next one!

Well, we got the storm this afternoon and my whole front yard was underwater because the storm drain got clogged. After 30 minutes of cleaning the thing out most of the flooding stopped. We didn't get very high winds, but the rain was bad.

I feel sorry for all these victims. New Orleans moved their football team to San Antonio to practice. That is cool. The pratices are closed to the public tho. Nice pics TConwell.
