Will Bonds Be The New Home Run King?

Barry Bonds just hit his 700th career home run tonight. I was wondering if you other people think he will or will not break Hank Aaron's record of 755. I personally think he will - he only needs 55 more - that means a possible five more this year and then 50 next year. Or break it up between next year and the year after. The reasons he won't: He's already 40 years old. Most baseball players start to tail off in their late 30s, let into their 40s. Yes, he still has 42 homers in only 340 at bats at 40 years old, but just remember what happened to Mark McGwire. He was on an amazing pace and then just retired out of nowhere at age 37. I think he will break the record by a longshot.

As much as I hate to say this, Bonds will break Aaron's record. I really wish that wasn't going to happen, but unless Bonds gets injured he will do it.

Also, capitalization is very handy.

There, I gave you a capital "Y", a comma, and an apostrophe. You can use it to convert your post into a state of coherency.

Yes, pointing out that you don't take the time to just use a damn shift key and make saomething 10x easier to read for all of us is inciting a flame war of epic proportions.

The answer is simply that Bonds will break the record if he wants to. There is certaintly no physical limitations that could hold him back from it, barring an unforseen freak injury. If he really wants the record, he'll either get it next year, or the year after as a free agent he can sign with an American League team and be a DH. As a DH Bonds wouldn't even have to field, and could easily play 2 or 3 years after that. As he pointed out in an interview, Julio Franco still is a fine hitter for the Braves at 46.

But if Barry decides for whatever reason that he's played his time, and the record isn't important to him, he'll stop. But if he wants it, he's got it.
you just love starting flame wars dont you?
It only becomes a flame war if someone writes back with a flame. You can choose to not let it become a flame war.

While we're on the topic of writing correctly, I'd like to direct your browser to the ThrillNetwork Forum Etiquette.

Now excuse me while I fix your posts.

I hope he doesn't. I don't like Bonds the same way I don't like spinach. And if he does, well, we know that its tainted anyhow.

IMO, Barry's ego is second to none. I'm sure he'll stay in baseball until he breaks Henry's record. I've always hated Bonds and hope he fails. Regardless of whether or not Bonds breaks the record, A-Rod will beat them all.

There is no doubt that he will break it. It's not a matter of "will", it's a matter of when. Personally, I think he will get 800 and even 850 wouldn't be out of the question if he really wanted to. He's in great shape and I know many will accuse him of drugs on that, but regardless of whether you like him or not and most people don't he is a great hitter. Not just for home runs, but for percentage also. He gets walked a lot and many are intentional but I heard a stat that about only about half are. So that means he still has had the patience in the count to get walked instead of taking bad swings like some other players do. Just look at Sammy Sosa, he hits a lot of home runs, but he swings at about anything it seems at times.

Bottom line, yes he will smash the record.

If Bonds does one more Season with the Giants, he will proabobly break the record of the most home runs. He already broke the most home runs in one season.

I hope he does it anyway. He's the only good player on the Giants.

I do think that he will break the record sometime next season if he doesn't get as many intentional walks like he has had this year. As for the whole drugs thing, it really doesn't bother me as he is still the one that has to have the skill to make the contact...all the drugs can do is add a little distance and most, if not all, of his homers would still go out.

In my opinion, MLB has to do something to improve the quality of pitching becuase that's the one big factor that has led to the homerun invasion of baseball in recent years.

I would love to see Hank's record stay forever, but someone has to break it sometime. Barry will break it no matter what. He isn't stopping any time soon either. He would be stupid to retire when he is still in good shape and he only has 55 more homers to go.

Bonds will hit 714 and 715 in early 2005, then he is going to hit 755 and 756 in early 2006. I think he will probably finish in the area of 775-790 Home Runs, he will probably be at the end of his rope around that time. After Barry, it is going to be Albert Pujols. That guy has been in the league only 3 seasons and already has 150+ homers. Give him 10-15 years and he is going to be pretty freaking close...
