My mini bike

My Dad and I are building a mini bike. We bought a chassis for $20 and we are going to sandblast it to get all the rust and stuff off. We already have the clutch and motor bought, also. I am just wondering what you all think of it.

picture 1:

Picture 2, and yes that is me!!!:
http://www.thrillnetwork.com/boards/attachment.php?attachmentid=12271&stc=1

and here is the motor:

I hope to post some more pics when we have gotten a little bit farther on progress.

Honestly, if that was me, I would be embarassed to ride that. It just looks so goofy. It dosen't look comfortable without a back, and it looks to small for something I would ever use. But I am sure you will have fun. How fast can it go? And just wondering.. where do you plan on riding it? Because I can almost guarantee those are not street legal.

I would love something like this... http://www.atlantatriumphducati.com/ducati/620Sport.html And its actually something affordable for a Ducati..

^I'm not going to ride it on the street!! I'm probably going to ride it through the new neighborhood which has just been paved and doesn't have many houses yet that is right down the road. The bike that you are looking at is roughly 12 times the price of mine. I'm only 13. This thing is awesome to me. Edh, you are just always in a bad mood aren't you?

You asked for everyones opinion, and I gave mine to you. Sorry if it is not something I would ever ride. I just have different tastes then you. When you ask for someones opinion, not everyone has to like it. I DID say "But I am sure you will have fun." Not liking the same thing you have dosen't make me be in a bad mood. And I am 19. So obviously I would think about stuff differently then a 13 year old.

I noted the "My dad and I". Good to see that you are doing something with your dad, cpdude. Mini-bike does look cool.

And Andrew P, I found that mistake too but I was just too lazy to fix it!

Is it those pocket bikes? Those things are noisy (even though I expect it to be). They were on the news once, disscussing about how its illegal to ride on streets and such.

Here is another link with that Ducati.
http://www.goldcoast-motorsports.com/pages/03Ducati620Sport.html

And no, it isn't a pocket bike. It's a motorcycle (well for $7,000 it better be). And your right, those pocket bikes are noisy. I've seen people riding them before at my school. It would be so hard to fit on one of those.

Its nice to get into a project with your dad, it should be a lot of fun to do. Plus minibikes are cool to ride around the neighborhood in.

Dude, I had alomost the same mini bike. Mine was green black. Man, me and my brother had fun times riding it in our yard. We always got in trouble though becasue we would accidentally rip up the yard. AWe had to trash it when some jealouse neighboor poured Sprite in the gass tank. When I found the person that did that I made him make sure that he didnt do it again. Nothing like a punch in the face a couple times to get an appology. Have fun and be safe and make sure that no jealouse neighboor sabotages it.

Yes, but only when you are grown up. I had various motorbikes (full size though, or very nearly, designed for younger people) and even a quad when i was about that age (sold them all long ago now). The quad was the most fun because i never dared to take the motorbike off road properly, and they were difficult to ride with an awkward gearbox (about 5 gears but 2 more low ratio). I might even have some pics lurking about if i can find them i'll post them.

Now i have a nice car though which takes all my money so i don't have anything like this any more. Having a car or bike that is road legal probably is more fun though.........

We might paint it a rocket red or an orange, and we are going to put an OCC sticker on the back. After we get it running a little bit we might lengthen the forks and make it into a chopper, but thats a might.

Zzzing. Yeah I can see where you are coming from CPdude. I remember being 13 and thinking that Go-Peds were so awesome. I never got that, or anything motorized for that matter, then you hit 16 and up and you wonder what you were thinking now that you can drive a car....

^This one is big for a mini bike. My dad is 6 foot 2 and he can fit on it.

I might have some more pics of it after school tomorrow, we have the motor and the clutch in it to see if it fits.

NEW PICS!!! The mini bike is now in our garage/machine shop on top of a bucket, lol. We put the motor in it to see if it fits, and it does!!! My dad says that it will probably go about 40 mph, and just to let you know, THIS WILL KILL ANY POCKET BIKE.

looks pretty good, is that engine brand new? If so is this project really worthwhile (in cost?). It would be a lot easily to buy a cheap mini bike and mod it.

Anyway what you going for? A 2 stroke? That engine looks kinda big for a 2 stroke 50cc but its difficult to tell. When you said clutch presumably you meant gearbox because the gearbox is big compared to any type of clutch.

EDIT: I just noticed the oil tank next to the petrol so i guess it probably is 2 stroke. most bikes like this are.

Dude, that's sweet. Mini bikes are a blast. I used to have one when I was like 12 or 13. I still have a running go-kart. We use it all the time.

You can probably look at the link that I posted in the first post. It's a link to a webpage where we bought it from. The engine is new, and even I realized that it was huge . It almost doesn't fit. We thought we were going to have to bend the one bars right by the gas tank because you couldn't unscrew the gas cap, but somehow, it ended up fitting. The clutch we got is awesome. It is $150 alone. The clutch and the engine is $400 bucks. I'm going to be nice and pitch in $50 of my money into it, lol.

If you ask me this project is worthwhile in cost because we can make it what we want. Yes, it would be a lot easier to buy a cheap mini bike and mod it but most mini bikes are only about 5 hp and this one has 6.5, and because this one is a little bit bigger than a normal one. (from what I've seen)
Actually hey its a start, it looks good so far, mabye a paint job or somthing but hey.. thats just me.
We are going to assemble it first and see if it runs. Then we will get all the rust off and paint it.

This is probably really close to the most well thought out post I have ever had. That is really sad.....

Well i'm not convinced that 1 hp will make a huge difference really. Thats not actually very powerful. For the bike, yes its an amazing power/weight ratio. But add an 80kg+ adult on it and don't expect it to go that fast. 40mph might be a little opptimistic but it would depend on the gearing.

We don't have a normal clutch. We have a torque converter. I only weigh like 140 so it will go faster with me on it. (no I'm not a fatty I'm just tall, lol)

a torque converter is worse for power loss, you have lossed 10% of the power already. I thought it might be a cvt if it was an 'auto'.

This isn't that type of torque converter. And it is a 4 stroke. I don't know what you are seeing next to the gas tank...... you obviously don't know much about these kind of engines.

We just got all the parts that we need yesterday. We are going to assemble it probably next week. This thing is going to turn out pretty cool. I will get pics when I can.
