When Humans Play God

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/01/0125_050125_chimeras.html
Check this article out. I had never really thought about this. I suppose some good could come out of it, but my overall impression is that this kinda thing shouldn't be done. As cited on the website, what if mice got human brains? I never thought this kinda thing could happen, and I think it could be dangerous.

Discuss.

I think that this sought of thing should be VERY, VERY closely monitered so that things don't get out of hand. I think that perhaps only established government labs should be taking part in this sought of thing so that it is monitered, rather than just any scientists going and doing whatever they please.

However, I do believe that some of this work should be done. If I ever needed a replacement organ, I would much rather have one that was created from my own DNA, so an almost exact replica, rather than an organ from a donor which my body may not accept. The bodies of people needing organ transplants not 'accepting' the organ of a donor I believe occurs often. So having one an organ replacement from your own DNA grown on an animal to me means almost 100% success rate for organ replacement.

But as I said, this needs to be monitered - I don't like the idea of smart mice with human brains running around everywhere, so there should be a limit as to what sought of things can be done, but it shouldn't be banned completely.

That is just an amazing article!

I don't know. To think of what could be learned from such experimentation makes this concept seem very tempting, but then again like it's been said. Where's the cut off?

It reminds me of Dark Angel...except that had animal DNA put into humans to give them animal like traits.

I think technology is vital. There should be some controls, but generally, i don't see any problem is improving things if it can be done.

That artical sounds dubious though, its unlikely the creature would have ever been alive.

Finally, I'm closer to having a real Jack-a-lope head to mount on my wall!

But seriously, I'm less worried or concerned with this type of research than Artificial intelligence in computers. At least with a genetically engineered animal, it'll still die from a bullet.

^With all this technology being developed it can only be a matter of time before something reaches critical mass.

Since when are humans not animals? Do animals not have emotion, or the ability to lvoe and communicate? Are animals barbarric, or better put, or animals any more barbaric that us? It seems that evolution stopped, because it saw the last thing it did was us, and didn't want any more damage. If I were an "animal" I would be ashamed to be cloned as half human. Wow. Thrillnetwork always has these bad stories to ruin my mood. At least i can always go play No Limits and feel better.

You called someone in your other "Oh no, it's the end of the world" thread uneducated. Your post shows how uneducated you actually are. "OMG, technology is the devil, it will get out of control and kill us all!" I may not agree with some of your conservative views, but this thread and your other thread are ridiculous. Your whole high and low moral periods idea is complete conservative Southern Baptist BS. You are ignorant, afraid of everything, and you blindly follow what others tell you without thinking.

While I'm greatly in favor of much research in this field, I believe this is too much. I'm all for spare parts, stem cell research and even full cloning with an upload of all brain content. I don't like this, though. The thought of creating some sub-human slave race or some such thing is disturbing.
