Though this could have been answered in a PM, I'll answer, the post count was lowered to 500, though you still have to be here for 6 months for the personal avatar to kick in. Now onto the Hurricanes...

I can't believe how much this storm has grown since it hit the gulf. I was not too worried about it since i thought it would be a depression by the time it hit land again. Hopefully everyone in it's path had enough warning and are getting as far away as possible. Hopefully it will stay far away from here.

Isn't that where Kraken (the old/banned TN member) lives? Hopefully almost everyone in New Orleans will obey the mandatory evactuation. Otherwise, they're going to be in for one hell of a ride. EDIT: http://www.intellicast.com <- Good for tracks and latest information on hurricanes. |

Wonder if anybody has had contact with Kraken lately? My prayers go out to all the people who are trapped in the city and won't be able to escape the storm, and also to those that may loose their homes and belongings. Several years ago I saw a documentary on how New Orleans- due to it's topography and location, would be near destroyed if a strong hurricane happened to come through the area. Guess this is it.

Alot of the interstates leaving New Orleans proper are now one way, eastbound going eastbound, westbound going easbound as well. This is the reason why the Interstate System was built- evacuations of large cities. At least they are moving quicker now than they were before...

It even looks like alot of places not on the gulf will see large effects from this (ie storms of severe nature). It even looks like it will reach the northern Ohio area albeit on a much smaller scale.

Keep sending prayers their way. I got to visit their wonderful city a few weeks ago, and it would pain me to see something so terrible as near destruction happen to it. Especially the French Quarter. There is too much history there for it to be destroyed in one swoop.
I can't believe how much this storm has grown since it hit the gulf.
You really shouldn't be, after all, it pretty much always happens. The water in the Gulf is generally much warmer than the water in the Atlantic and even in the island-infested part of the Carribbean, so it just charges storms and makes them grow exponentially. |

I left this morning and it was a category 1-2 and when I got home it was a 5. Horrible. New Orleans was the greatest designed city in history but I think even if it was at sea level it would have major flooding. The satelite images of this storm are huge. The eye is so defined. It is almost scary. Kind of like 'Day after Tomorrow'. In all seriousness: I thought of the fact that the cemetaries in NO are all above gorund, meaning the bodies are in 'boxes' that are above the ground and not 6 feet under. This is due to the water level and whatnot. But if the city is completely flooded, many bodies will be floating. This could be a serious problem. Has anything like that ever happened before?

From what I understand, New Orleans (as we know it) will pretty much be wiped off the face of the earth by the time this thing has passed. All that will be left is a giant body of contaminated water. It could end up being one of the biggest natural disasters of our time.. Once again, my prayers are with everyone that is in the path of Katrina.

This storm has massively exploded in a very short time. Right now, it is a category 5 storm with winds over 160 MPH around the eyewall, and the projected path is forecasted to make a DIRECT HIT on New Orleans, Louisiana. This storm will be one for the record books. The primary threat for destruction will be the tornadoes. The cause of all this is the extremely warm waters on the gulf; water temperatures are well over 90 degrees Fahrenheit. This has been the story of this season's tropical season, which is why we are seeing an unprecedentally active season. We are not even half-way through the season, and already we've had 11 named storms, which is more than half of the names on the list. The peak of the season is still two weeks away (September 11), and that will determine whether this season shatters the record books.

It is quite strange to think about what might actually happen. From what I've read, much of New Orleans could be destroyed and depending on how many people have stayed, an untold number of lives lost. I can only hope that it won't be as bad as it could possibly be. I do have to wonder though why people might live there.I don't mean for it to come off as ignorant but rather a serious thought. I visited New Orleans almost five years ago exactly. I happened to watch a show about New Orleans and how a severe storm could send them underwater and possibly destory the city. It went on to say it was very likely to happen within as little as a hundred years. And while 100 years would be a relatively short time, I don't think anyone truly expected it to only be five years after I visited and saw this show. I do hope that everyone that tried to make it out of the projected path of the hurricane was able to do so. Also those who decided to stay, (foolish as I think it is for many who did) and others who unfortunately couldn't leave for one reason or another, I hope that it doesn't turn out as bad as some are predicting.

I'm watching New Orleans TV right now as we speak, and I'm just going to say this... this is definitely history in the making. What surprises me so far is that no one anywhere has said anything about Six Flags New Orleans (at least as of 2:45am (Eastern)). Though, I wouldn't be surprised if there was severe damage at the park and it's closed for a while. But honestly, I care about the bigger picture here, and the fact that this has already been compared to the tsunami disaster last December, and people are projecting more damage than what Andrew did in Florida in 1992. Even people in the National Weather Service has been saying some doom and gloom, even using words or phrases I've never seen in weather discussions or weather statements.

Apparently Katrina is now down to a category one hurricane as it moves up the southeast. Its lowest central pressure was recorded right before landfall at 902 millibars, therefore making it the third most powerful hurricane to ever slam in the US; also top sustained winds of 165 MPH was recorded at the time.

It was originally thought that Hurricane Katrina was a lot less disasterous than it could have been. That thought certainly has changed. Leevees have been breached and water has just poured into New Orleans. Water covers 80% of the city with some places being up to the rooftops of the houses. This has turned into a true disaster in every way.

| Hurricane Rita
Well. It has generated enough news already. If you dont know, I thought I should give you an update. The storm has reached Category 5 status and is raging in the Gulf of Mexico taking along with it 165 MPH winds to the Texas Coast. It's expected to make landfall by Saturday, meteorologists predict, but being an intensifying Category 5 Hurricane, who knows. Many counties have called for Mandatory Evacuation, while some call for voluntary. My county has not though, but along with much of Houston Area schools, my ISD has closed. By late afternoon today, it was 700 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, and is raging toward us at a size of 350 miles across, basically placing everywhere that is west of the Gulf in danger. Katrina evacuees that were housed in the AstroDome and area shelters are being speedily sent to Arkansas for placement, while Brazoria County has institued mandatory evacuation for three different zones: A, B, and C, with A being low lying coastal areas, B and C being more inland areas that are also in danger nonetheless. Six Flags AstroWorld has also closed in response to the monstrous hurricane, allowing it's staff to evacuate if they desire. Evacuees are being encouraged to go to Bryan/College Station, Austin, Dallas and other area cities. This will be one beast of a storm, and will hit the Houston region head on. I live 45 miles north of Houston, but am not evacuating. Houston is not the direct path of Rita, but we will experience the strong side of the storm with the hurricane force winds. I am not sure when I will lose my power or my water line, but I know it will give sooner or later. Most likely, by Saturday, majority of the Greater Houston area will have lost all power and water mains. I ask you to keep all Houston area people in your thoughts and prayers as the anticipation and anxiety of this storm grows with every minute. This will be one heck of a roller coaster ride. Sincerely, lectricShark ;party;

I don't know how I should respond to this. I live south of San Antonio. I know all along the Texas Coast will be effected or affected? lol. One of those. So I guess I am starting to get a little worrieded here, cause I don't know what is going to happen. Probably by tomorrow we will know the direct path and what not. Right now its up for grabs. I say it goes a little above Corpus not towards galveston and what some predict. Who knows? Time will tell.

Yea, Montu, that makes you sound like an a-hole. Sure, you may not like Bush, but do you really want Texas to get "screwed" so that Bush's ranch will be destroyed? And why are you laughing? This is another serious storm that America just doesn't need right now.

That was a little inconsiderate. Anyway, majority of the evacuees are trying to leave Houston before she makes landfall on I-45 and any of the other major evacuation routes, which is causing major traffic jams and causing many, many, many gas stations to run dry. I visited a station around 4PM today, and several of the ports were closed, and the ones that were open were running sluggishly.

See what happens when Six Flags says it wants to sell Astroworld's land, thus stripping the park clean. Here's the wrecking ball. Well I hope for the best for Texas. Mother Nature dares to mess with Texas.
