I heard somewhere today that Texas was closing its Interstates tomorrow at 6PM. Is this only for coming in, all of them, or is this just a rumor that is false? In any way, I pray for all of you that are in Rita's line of devastation. How can you even laugh at this and say that Texas is screwed? Have you not seen the pictures of Katrina's devastation? Would you like it if this happened to you? I don't think so. So how about we grow up, look at this situation with maturity, and pray to God that the damage isn't horrible so that human lives will not be lost and that taxes will not be raised again for another $60 billion relief fund. I also heard that Rita's so called, 'route' is suppposed to hit 18 oil refineries along its way so watch out for a spike in gas prices. Gas in Kansas went up 10 cents today. Again, my prayers go out to all of you in Rita's line of devastation. God Bless. |
Yea, Montu, that makes you sound like an a-hole. Sure, you may not like Bush, but do you really want Texas to get "screwed" so that Bush's ranch will be destroyed? And why are you laughing? This is another serious storm that America just doesn't need right now.
Well you Mr. Kentucky doesn't have to worry about hurricanes. It's really only affecting you by gas prices. We got hit (just in our area, not all of FL :flip:)by three hurricanes last year (Charley ripped apart our area, but our house wasn't damaged). Plus, we always have to worry about storm #387237838 coming toward us. Sure maybe it's not good that another storm is coming, but at least it's not coming to Florida. EDIT: and Tncorlo (or w/e your name is), I've already been hit by a hurricane. I've seen the damage it can do. Almost everybody I knew who lived under a tree got part of their roof or whole house destroyed. I've seen people lining up in front of closed down grocery sotres, with no electricity, water, or anything. Lemme tell ya, it's hell. It's 10 times worse then how it sounds. And when we got it, I think Charley was a category 2... Last edited by Montu Man; 09-22-2005 at 12:16 AM. |

If they did, they would have I-45 changed into having both ways (North and South) into only going North. This can be done, but I do not believe that that is what they are going to do. At least from what I've heard/seen. I live right next to I-45. It's a <5 min walk for me to the interstate, and from what i've seen/heard, it will remain as it is.

At the moment, she is about 540 miles, 870 km, east-southeast of Galveston and about 645 miles, 1040 km, East-Southeast of Corpus Christi Texas, with Max Winds of 175 mph, still floundering around in the 5th category. It is predicted to drop down to Category 4 when it meets land, but meteorlogists state that the important northern motion that will decide where its main path of destruction will lead has not occurred. Majority of the Houston region will possible lose power tomorrow or friday morning/evening. Good luck to any southern posters here, and stay safe. Sincerely, -- lectricShark

If houston recieves the brunt of the storm surge, you guys might get about 30 ft of water. She's estimated to hit landfall around 1a.m. Saturday morning! Good luck! I'm glad all I have to worry about is tornadoes...

She's starting to turn northbound, and as predicted, all lanes of I-45 ARE turned northbound.

Sorry Montu Man, it's jsut that I have friends down in Texas where its supposed to hit and I'm worried for them. Sorry for your losses in previous hurricanes, it just seemed like laughing at the situation was disrespectful to all those people down there. I sure hope tough that this things goes west fast or else N.O. will be under water again.

At the moment, the AVERAGE speed of getting from downtown Houston to FM 1960 is 7 miles per hour. TXDot is using all of its resources to evacuate all of the citizens of all the advised counties, as this contraflow is an unprecendented move, but TXDot says it will be done.. And Rita has weakened to a still very strong, Category 4 Hurricane, but with Houston still set dead in her sights.

Hurricane Rita at one point exeeded the intensity of Katrina. Both storms maxed out at 175 MPH top sustained winds, but Rita's 897 millibars now topped Katrina's 902 millibars as the third most powerful Atlantic/Gulf storm ever. But now Rita has shown some apparent weakening since last night due to slightly cooler gulf waters and entering drier atmosphere. Also originally it was on track for just north of Corpus Christi, then the projected landfall moved ever more up the coast to Matagorda Bay, then to Freeport/Galveston, and now to Port Arthur, TX/Cameron, LA. And by the way, I merged the original Hurricane Rita thread with the general topic on the hurricane season.

| Rita is on her way
It's kinda scary to think that in 24 hours hurricane Rita will devistate thousands and destroy so many stuff. 80% of Texas has been evacuated and the roads are blocked fully. What is you're opinion of this second Hurricane in the category 5?

Well Corpus Christi is now virtually out of the picture, as is pretty much anywhere south of Port 'O Connor/Matagorda Bay; we're not going to get anything but little moisture and fairly strong breeze. Also looks like Houston is inching slightly out of the way. And with Rita gradually weakening, things are looking better than what the forecast indicated yesterday. So there some good news for everyone to read about.

Ah, I didnt think so. Rita is slowly shifting it's direct path from Houston, so that is good news. Reports are saying it might weaken to a Category 3 Hurricane by the time it makes landfall, so things really lare looking better. and UK kid, they probably said 80% of the Galveston Area, and it's weakening so maybe things wont be as bad...
Thats what i've heard on the BBC News and they're trust worthy.
EH, but I know a lot more because I live in that area. Its probably 80% of the gulf coast like ...shark said. Its a cat 3 now. With 125 mph winds. |

For a while, the convections to the West of the eye looked like they were being cut off/collapsing, a sure sign of some weakening. It's not going to be pretty, but things certainly could've been much work. Does anybody know how vulnerable the Kemah Boardwalk and it's rides are? Where is it in location to Houston? I saw either CNN or Fox News broadcasting from there.
Ha ha Texas is screwed. Maybe Bush's ranch can get wrecked and we can all laugh at him and make him get a sex change.
I hope you get a hurricane up the butt.
Thats what i've heard on the BBC News and they're trust worthy.
Texas is a big place, I would say probably less than 15% has been evacuated. I don't think this is going to be as bad as people are making it out to be. Many people are still thinking more along the lines of the devastion caused by Katrina. Sure there will be flooding, but there's no 1 million+ cities, with levees flowing through them, under sea level in Texas. Its going to be pretty bad, but in terms of damage...probably not catastrophic.(IMO) Now in terms of gas prices...

^ Gas prices will probably go up b/c of the serious refining industry in that area. Just when prices begin to lower back to pre-Katrina levels...
Does anybody know how vulnerable the Kemah Boardwalk and it's rides are? Where is it in location to Houston? I saw either CNN or Fox News broadcasting from there.
Kemah is near the Johnson Space Center area, probably halfway between downtown Houston and Galveston. It will probably be hit really hard since it is right on the shores of Galveston Bay. It's a shame.. thousands of boats in that area and all of the great development down there will probably be ruined :(
I hope you get a hurricane up the butt.
Agreed, in an attempt to put it as nicely as I can, montu man, you are an immature and arrogant *******.
^ Gas prices will probably go up b/c of the serious refining industry in that area. Just when prices begin to lower back to pre-Katrina levels...
That depends on where you live. Arizona gets 99% of it's gas from pipelines from California refineries. Our attorney general is ready to sue the pants off of anyone who jumps prices.

You're right, I guess I should say that "Gas prices here in Atlanta are just getting back to pre-Katrina prices". I just read that prices dropped in late trading since the hurricane was downgraded so that's good :) Any gas station owner with a good knowledge of economics could beat any charges of price gouging. I highly doubt anyone would be convicted unless they were absolutely retarded and raised prices above $10/gal or something absurd like that. |
