All this anticipation about the Texas coast possibly getting slammed, and yet the Louisiana coast is about to get hit harder than the Texas coast. The eye of the storm looks to be headed right for the state line. But since Louisiana is to the east of Rita, they going to suffer more damage with the storm surge and more flooding.

As for the Houston metro area, they are probably out of the picture as well; all that will happen there is maybe some moisture/rainfall and some fairly strong winds. Most of the action will take place around the Golden Triangle area (Beaumont/Orange/Port Arthur) in Texas and as far east as Lake Charles, LA.

Basically the impact of Rita will greatly pale in comparison to that of Katrina; the Texas coast is much higher in elevation than New Orleans, Rita is a weaker landfalling storm than Katrina was, and preparation efforts for Rita now appears to be somewhat redundant.

Galveston/Houston really was spared from Rita. As she slowly inched more and more towards the border, things really were looking better for us.

Bryan -- At the Kemah Boardwalk, they have the ferris wheel actually SPINNING while the Hurricane makes landfall. They said that it creates less wind resistance. (?) I checked the news later, and the wheel was spinning abnormally faster because the wind was pushing the wheel. And they also have long wires tightend around the sky cabin ride to help it stay standing. KPRC reports that planks in the boardwalk are popping up b/c of the force from the crashing waves! I hope Kemah stays alright. Jelly fish are popping up on to the boardwalk. I believe it made it out alright though.

I dont have school until Wednesday, either. The Metro area in Houston had Hurricane force winds, and many buildings had their windows shattered, glass strewn all over the streets. I lost power for roughly 10 hours, but thankfully, I live next to a Hospital, which provided my power grid with more precedence in restoration than others. The return trip will be very painful for many, but the Texas gov't has created a plan for the Houston area (3 major zones, people who live in each zone to return on certain days in order to regulate the influx).

I really see many people now lining up at Wal-Marts and Targets and other stores with receipts and other items... But, it was better to be not home and have a tree fall down on your house's living room, than being home and having a tree fall down on your house's living room.

I saw that, too. Ten bucks says a light when on in someone's brain and a Six Flags park will get a Ferris Wheel next season and it runs that fast and is called Hurricane Wheel Xtreme. "The World's Fastest Ferris Wheel!"
It's kinda scary to think that in 24 hours hurricane Rita will devistate thousands and destroy so many stuff. 80% of Texas has been evacuated and the roads are blocked fully.
I probably should point out that 80% of Texas is roughly 16 million people....it would literally take weeks to get that many out of the state. Just thought I'd point that out.

Time to bump this topic up...

As of this morning, NOAA confirmed Wilma being the most intense hurricane to date with its extremely low pressure and sudden growth to Cat. 5 strength. Projected paths say that this storm would likely hit South Florida (likely the Naples/Ft. Myers area) or (the path I would LOVE it to take) south of the Keys...

Be prepared Florida, despite the fact the hurricane may deintensify down to a cat 4 or 3... be prepared.

Wilma has me worried. My 80 yr old Grandparents live in Homestead, so I'm worried that they'll get a direct hit :(. They Survived Andrew in '92 but I'm really hopping this time they'll evacuate to my Aunt's house in Tallahassee. I pray to the Goddesses and God's that if they stay in Homestead, that they'll be spared from a direct hit.

My parents live in Bonita, right between Naples and Fort Myers. I am extremely worried. If Wilma goes down to a Cat. 3 they should be ok, seeing as they are at least a mile inland. One problem they have is their attached porch is attached to their roof. The porch goes and so does the roof. Please pray for all the people in FL. This is a pretty bad storm. Good luck all.

Katie
As of this morning, NOAA confirmed Wilma being the most intense hurricane to date with its extremely low pressure and sudden growth to Cat. 5 strength.
The peak central pressure on Hurricane Wilma broke the all-time record of 882 millibars, making it the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in history! It has weakened somewhat due to the close proximity to Central America and will continue to weaken as it pushes through the Yucatan Penninsula and Cuba, but is expected to re-gain more strength as it moves through the Gulf of Mexico before nailing Florida.

This season will certainly be one for the history books. Yet another historical first was made earlier this month when Hurricane Vince became the first Atlantic storm to land in Europe's Iberian Penninsula (Spain/Portugal). Now with Wilma, the 2005 season has tied the modern history for the most named storms at 21, for only the second time, the complete list of names have been registered. Three hurricane form this year -- Katrina, Rita, and now Wilma -- are now on the top four most powerful hurricanes in recorded history. And yet we have another month-and-a-half left in the season.

Homestead is on the Atlantic Ocean side of Florida, not the Gulf side. They still might get hit with a cat 2 or 1, but just because it says at cat 4 doesn't mean it will be a cat 4 when it gets there. Anyways, I wish your grandparents the best and hope they don't get hit hard.

This storm is/was something else. 882 milibars, man that is low. They said the eye is only 1 mile wide or something like that, comapred to a weaker Katrinia's 40 mile wide eye. Once again, I hope everyone the best during the storm. Hopefully this will be the last big storm that we have to deal with this year.

Right now noone really knows where in Florida it's going to hit, and they won't have much of an idea until Friday night or Saturday, from the looks of it. We have to wait for it to start to turn before they can make a better guess as to where it's going to go.

Kind of stinks, since we don't know whether to prepare or not. Guess it means that I'll be working on Saturday to, and have to wait and see on Monday. Boy I could use a storm day off right now. :)

^If the storm hits Naples or somewhere close to that, will BGT shut down for the day?

Now they are talking about a cat 5 as it moves over Cancun and Cozemel. To add to that, hurricane conditions can occur there for 24 to 30 hours since it is moving so slow now. I would hate to live there right now.

^ Don't have a clue. The park hasn't made any decisions as of yet, and are taking a wait and see on it right now.

A lot of it will depend on how likely it is to get very windy and stormy here. If we're looking at the possibility of tropical storm conditions in the area, then they'll probably close. But not sure how strong that it might have to be for them to plan on closing. It's hard to predict to until it makes that turn and we get a good idea of how big and how strong it's going to be, along with where it's going to hit.

Did BGT decide to close? I know Universial and Disney did, but for some strange reason, Sea World has said they are remaining open.

No school tomorrow! Thank you hurricane Wilma! (just don't knock my power out)

Well as incredible as it is, we have one more hurricane in the Atlantic -- Hurricane Epsilon. It is barely a minimal hurricane status with 75 MPH winds and it is not a threat to any landfall, although the effect of high surf from Epsilon was felt around Bermuda. So that makes an unprecedented 26 named storms so far in 2005 with a record-breaking 14 of those reaching hurricane status this season. Unless a miracle happens, that will probably conclude the 2005 season.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/210158.shtml?3day

Again, this has been a season for the history books. Just as it seemed like few thought last year was ever going to be topped, this year made several unprecedented events.

Before 2005, Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 was the most powerful hurricane recorded with 888 millibars (mb) before it slammed into southern Texas/northern Mexico (I even remember living through its impact). This year, Hurricane Wilma broke that record with 882 mb making it the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in history. Hurricanes Rita (897 mb) and Katrina (902 mb) are also #4 and #6 respectively on the all-time most powerful list; all three of those storms this year recorded peak sustained winds of 175 MPH, which are among the highest winds ever recorded.

Hurricane Katrina also topped Andrew (~$26 billion) as the costliest natural disaster ever in the Western Hemsphere with anywhere from $80-$130 billion in damages. It is also the third deadliest hurricane in U.S. history.
