It has been pretty rainy here as well. We just had this giant downpour end a few minutes ago, and now the ready has calmed down. It is 59 degrees right now.

Not quite as scorching hot as it was last week, but still somewhat above normal for this time of the year:

Laredo, TX
Friday -- High 104
Saturday -- High 103/Low 74
Sunday -- 100/74
Monday -- 100/76
Tuesday -- 101/76

McAllen, TX
Friday -- 98
Saturday -- 98/72
Sunday -- 97/74
Monday -- 97/75
Tuesday -- 98/76

The NWS site seemed to be down so I typed it in. Normally, we see these temps in July and August, but for now they are 5-10 degrees above normal.

In addition, the weather will look mostly clear and tranquil through the next several days, as indicated by the following surface and 200-mb level charts.

area surface chart

200-mb chart

As you can see, the winds are coming from the south from Mexico on the surface and the dominant ridge in the southwest are keeping the skies clear and temps on the warm side.

I could be incorrect but tornadoes were probably a negative in Ohio today.....there didn't appear to be very much in the way of wind shear in the area. There were loads of moisture and energy in the atmosphere though to fire up some severe thunderstorms.

I like the old way that tornado warnings were issued. If a funnel cloud was spotted, then the T.W. went up. Now with all the computers, they issue Tornado Warnings "for the heck of it."

A funny story: I was in the Library at Kent State a few summers ago. An announcement went on the speakers that there was a tornado warning for Portage County. I laughed, I looked outside and saw SUN and BLUE SKY. So, before I humored them and hit the basement, I checked radar. The storm that gave my county the warning is on the northern border of the county. Kent is located in the west central part of Portage county.

They still issue a tornado warning the old-fashioned way....if the tornado or a funnel/wall cloud is spotted by storm chasers (or anyone in the area), but that can only cover so much area. With computers, the doppler radar can detect a hook echo where tornadic activity is favorable. But even with the latest tools and systems, this is never a slam-dunk process; there are always some problems:

Even with hook echos, there is no absolute certainty that tornadoes have formed. But because most of the time hooks do produce tornadoes, forecasters can't take chances....they have to play it safe and assume that there is a tornado anytime they see a hook on the radar. So there is a possibility that a tornado warning has been issued, yet not a single one has formed. And sometimes, tornadoes form even when there are no hooks spotted on radar; that is when the doppler radar can't sense anything and storm spotters out in the area are important to forecasters. So there is a lot of confusion when it comes to tornado warnings.

And you would be surprised how many people don't even know the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning, which are two completely different things.

The weather is great here in Florida with high 80's low 90's and the occasional shower. This could change though in a few weeks as hurricane season starts soon . Luckily, the meteoroligists say that it shouldn't be as bad as last year!

^ I know (the weatherman keeps reminding us to prepare now ). However it usually dosen't start to get active till early July, except for last year, but that was an odd season. Does Texas usually get hit by alot of storms? I know there was Rita last year, but is that common?

Yes it is.

We get our major share of storms, though not quite as much as Florida. We will get slammed by a hurricane at an average pace of once every other year, as well as some tropical storms that we get practically every year.

As for my area Corpus Christi, we have been very, very lucky; the last direct hit by a major hurricane was in 1970, and it was a category four storm. We've had several near misses though, and we've been directly hit by a number a tropical storms through the years.
