Cleveland School Shooting thwarted, teens accused claims it was a joke

Yeah, you read that right...

These kids had an arsenal and plans and no motive, which is all perfect for a school shooting rampage. They even had a date set.

Columbine-style attack....On Monday, the teens discussed a plan to place propane tanks around the school, in the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood, and then attack the school with guns on Oct. 11, the SuccessTech shooting anniversary, Stacho said.

At least two other students heard their discussion and the two suspects cautioned them to avoid the school on that date, Stacho said.

When police interviewed them, they admitted discussing the plot but said it was a joke.
Wow. A joke. I'm laughing...my sides are hurting. This is the same thing as phoning in a bomb threat or threatening the President (in my opinion). Are kids getting dumber these days? Don't they know that drawing up plans to shoot up their school is NOT a joke?

Sheesh.

I'm glad this one was stopped before it could happen. I'm getting really sick of the school shootings. The only thing we can hope for is that the shooters talk about it so it's overheard and stopped like in this case.

Tasteless jokes can actually be funny sometimes. The problem for you James is that you're just not funny. Sorry man.

As for the kids, if they were just talking stupid and if young enough, I would say a suspension would be enough. You say they had an arsenal to do it, then that's different and the punishment should obviously be more severe.

I think the "excuse" of a joke is allowed... But I don't think it's a reason not to punish them as if it weren't... They won't learn from their mistakes otherwise.

Surprisingly, it's not that uncommon for kids nowadays to joke about school shootings. They don't even have to be outcasts, they just like to put their spin on how they would do it. That doesn't make it any more acceptable though to joke about this type of thing. It's sickening and scary how some kids don't think much of the issues at hand with school shootings.

It didn't sound like it was joke, but something they were actually considering doing. They only claimed it was joke when interviewed by authorities. These kids should definatelty be punished. I say give 'em hell.

Seriously...

I think the kids think it's like shooting somone in the head and saying "Oh sorry, I didn't mean to" and thinking that is going to fix things.

They should have to pay the consequences of their actions, but at the same time look at their record. If they never caused probems before, don't throw them in jail. Let them serve community service or something that will make them think twice about doing it again.

I think kids are going to joke about stuff like this. They just shouldn't let it get out. Joke among yourselves at home or something. But if they were trying to plot it, them claiming it as a joke is just stupid. People should know that you can't joke about stuff like this.

Maybe the theme of sarcasm was meant to be more prevalent in his statement than just a tasteless joke. But what do I know about sarcasm, I'm just from New Jersey.

Kids are becoming more and more numb to the violent situations reported on the news. They don't care about anyone but themselves. So "joking" about attacking a school means nothing to them except playing out a real-life videogame scenario. Parents aren't raising their kids anymore, they're leaving television, games, and the internet responsible.

The kids just might think it's OK to shoot someone in the head, and an apology will do. After all...when you send Dick Cheney hunting, he shoots people instead of game and doesn't have to serve any jail time!!!

Just another reason to get these Republicans out of office.

I love how this turns into poltics all of a sudden. lol

And don't misinterept that I'm saying go easy on the kids, but people do make mistakes, and I don't think you should "give em hell" if it's their first time, and they just ran off their mouth to be the "tough kids".

We all make mistakes, it just depends on what their real motives were and if they truly were (doubting it) joking.
