US Airways plane crashes into the Hudson river in NYC.

4 p.m. US Airways plane goes down in Hudson River - TribToday.com - News, Sports, Jobs, Community Information - Tribune Chronicle - Warren, OH

Flight from NYC to Charlotte, NC.

Looks like no one was seriously injured!! Apparently, from what I was watching on the news, two birds hit the plane. But, that is a first report kind of thing.

Glad everyone was OK!

Wow, I wonder if anyone I know was on there...but I doubt it.

That reminds me of when that plane crashed into the Potomac back in the 80s.

There's been some seriously intense internet reporting / social media about this event. The internet is amazing.

Quote:
Janis Krums from Sarasota, Florida posts the first photo of U.S. Airways flight 1549 on Twitter from his iPhone. Thirty-four minutes after Janis posted his photo, MSNBC interviewed him live on TV as a witness. News coverage at Google. TV reports suggest that everyone survived the crash.

From Alley Insider
Really glad to hear that everyone is okay. Sucks for those birds, though!

^ Wes, I had a friend on that place that was Houston-bound from Denver that crashed off the run way. It's pretty scary when things hit home.

It is amazing he was able to land the plane safely. Landing a plane with under the wing engines on water is one of the hardest things a pilot has to face. If they aren't perfectly level, there could be disastrous consequences.

Anyway, glad to hear everyone was safe, and can't wait to see this episode on Mayday.

Major kudos to the pilot. I'm amazed he landed the plane perfectly on water. Always good news to hear everyone walked away as well.

It's amazing he parked it in the river. A few feet here a few feet there and he could have been in some building, on the freeway. So he scaled the Manhattan skyline.

Amazing feat by the pilot and I hope he is recognized for what he managed to do. They're also reporting that he walked the plane multiple times before he got off to make sure everyone was out before he himself evacuated.

Incidents like this are one of the reasons I'm working towards becoming a search and rescue diver. They're interviewing one of the divers on MSNBC right now and I'd love to be doing what they were doing.

I would also like to join in on the round of applause for the Captain, flight crew, and the rescuers that evacuated the aircraft in what I read was just 90 seconds time, which is incredible for getting all 155 occupants (passengers and flight crew) out of the plane.

Some of you probably know that I work for Bank of America, and Charlotte is the headquarters.

I've heard that there were 19 bank employees on that flight.

Kudos as well to the pilot, like he'll ever read this but that was one amazing job.

I heard one report that he missed the G. Washington Bridge by 900 ft.

This was nothing short of a miracle. The pilot and crew did an amazing job from what I read.

You hate to see a plane crash, but this is the result you want when it does happen.

This could have easily ended in an extremely ugly manner. I agree with the tip of the hat to the pilot and flight crew.

I would dig seeing footage of the plane landing on the water.

Pilots around the world could get some tips, cause if you can always find a dependable way to land on water-much like this Pilot did-there's almost no reason to worry about landing a plane like this in emergencies when you're flying over water (unless you're in a tail dive or something).

Simply amazing, 155 lives pretty much are owed to that pilot. He even waited to leave the plane until he was sure everybody else was out and safe. What an amazing story.

They were showing the flight path on the news. And yes, they were only at about 900 ft when they went over the George Washington bridge. It amazes me how he was trying to get back to the airport but when he realized he couldn't make it, he made an abrupt turn and put it down on the Hudson like it was a runway and he'd planned it all along. Simply amazing.

I can't believe in this world where everyone has a camera/video phone, that noone was able to record it going down.

It may be a few days before anyone discovers they have it. The Minneapolis bridge collapse was caught on a security camera, but they didn't have the footage till about a month later. Same with 9/11 - the film crew that recorded the first plane didn't release the footage until later on.

Well, the thing is if my plane was crashing, especially into water, my last worry would not be trying to record the crash on video but rather on something else, like remaining in crash position, however I'm assuming you mean that of a spectator.

My dad said that he saw it descending, but I was in class so I just read it on the news. No big deal, just another day here. All it did was create more traffic on 34th Street.

I wonder if the birds were trained by terrorists.

All in all the pilot should get a raise and a lot of honor for landing the plane so successfully into the water without injuring anyone further than a bruise or two, it's pretty amazing. And the plane floated.

Now the real fun part is seeing how they get it out.

I guess a Hollywood movie would be coming?

It was cool to see expanded coverage today on ABC News and 20/20. My coworker, an aviation student, explained the theory of the pilot's landing. It sounded like a big belly flop.

Does Discovery in the US not have the show Mayday?
It only took them about a year and a half to do a show on the Air France flight that went off the runway here in Toronto a few years ago.
I suspect as soon as the NTSB is done their investigation the show will be on within a year.

I saw on the news last night that a security camera did catch it going down, but it's sight line was cut off right before it actually touched water. As companies review security tapes, someone will probably find another shot of it.

Touching on what you said, Ryan, I remember seeing made-for-TV movies regarding the Aloha Airlines incident and the United Airlines crash at Sioux City, Iowa.

The girl I dated back in November, if most of you can recall her, was flying from New York City back to her home in San Deigo, CA. She was visiting New York City on her vacation period with a couple of her friends.

She was on a Delta Airlines flight from JFK Int'l to San Diego Int'l, and her plane took off the same hour as that US Airways 1549 that took off from the LaGuardia Airport. So she didn't know about the incident until after she landed in San Diego; she was kind of freaked out by hearing that her flight took off about the same time.

I look at AirDisaster.com every now and then when wanting to see crash photos. Interesting that the NY crash was an Airbus 320, which has had some engine problems in the past. AirDisaster.Com News: Warning issued to airlines flying Airbuses
