Superstitions

We have Friday the thirteenth coming up for two months in a row (February and March). Tell us about what superstitions you believe.

-When I played baseball, I always made sure to never step on the foul line when taking the field.
-When watching football, I am a firm believer that the position of any of my body parts has an affect on the outcome of the game. I also think that once I figure out what it is that is affecting the game it no longer works.
-I have other things that border on obsessive compulsive rather than superstitious, such as flicking the water off of my hands 7 times after washing them, before drying them.

Yeah, I'm weird.

Clearly you people are insane

I refuse to handshake/hug people as a greeting or farewell if we are in a doorway or window. I will get out of the car, or step into the house. Even if we're between the kitchen and the hallway, it's no go.

^Yup, I'm actually serious. The baseball one is pretty common among players, and I know of other people who think that their position affects the game. The water thing is probably slight OCD.

Seriously...for the longest time in my Saturday Morning Bowling League, I would eat Boysenberry Yogurt for breakfast. Another superstition I held long after that and into other leagues was that once my initial string of strikes got past 6, I would focus on the next shot and only the next shot. When I started talking ahead of my next shot, I found I choked...

Crossing the lines never bothered me playing baseball as a kid.

On every Friday the 13th, I wear a tin foil hat and start conspiracies. Here's one of my conspiracy friends. I think he's trying to control my mind with that red thermal mug.

Everytime I ride a coaster, it valleys. I've never been on a stalled coaster or had one roll back (except Wicked Twister and what was Superman: Ultimate Escape, which does that by design).

Remember, Steve- just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're NOT all out to get you.

I'm betting that at least one player on your team was aware of the lines though.

Another superstition that I used to have, but not really anymore, is that I didn't like stepping on the breaks between the sidewalk slabs. I have a lot of other weird things with lines, but I'm not getting into it; I guess that's what got me into architecture though.

That one's not really weird to me. I'm not sure about you, but back when I was a kid we had that old superstition rhyme..."step on the crack and break your mother's back."

I don't have many superstitions...I live in house number 13 and have 3 black cats that cross my path regularly. Although, I will walk around ladders and try not to break any mirrors.

^ There was actually an episode of the old Batman show that delt with superstitions, the not walking under a ladder isn't based off superstition just common sense as usually when a ladder is setup it is for something. If it is setup for painting, you could bump the ladder and spill paint on yourself...

But what's weird is that I was fine with actual cracks in the cement, but not with the purposely made gaps left from the forms.

I guess it's my turn. I always walk under ladders. I simply can't resist it. I just think it's tempting and people always tell me I'm going to have something like seven years of bad luck or something like that. So I walk under it again just for good measure.

^ I'm glad I'm not the only one who does that. As soon as someone says "you shouldn't do that" I purposely do it again. And ladders are just soooo tempting.

The only superstition I can really think of is if I spill salt on the table (only salt, not pepper), I take a pinch of it and throw it over my left shoulder. I've always heard it was to throw it in the face of the devil, but I have no idea why I actually do it. I also tap the windshield with my knuckle when I go through a yellow light.
