Angry Too technical on judging?

Okay. So I've notice lately that so many really good uploaded No Limits coasters are constantly shot down by people who overjudge the ride. They look for all of the tiniest details and pretty much purposely try to make the person feel bad. It seems pretty stupid to me. Why would you check a ride for every possible detail. It's just a ride. No roller coaster in real life is perfect so why should computer animated ones?

1. Roller coasters in real life better be perfect, or just about 99.999% perfect, or chances are they would cause some type of injury.

2. If you don't like getting judged, you have two choices. Either don't upload your coasters and just show them off to friends and family, or ignore the comments.

People judge the rides as if they were real because that is one of the fun things with NoLimits...to make realistic coasters. If your coaster comes close to a support where a person's arm or head would come off or is pulling 15Gs and would probably cause some kind of serious injury, why shouldn't they judge that?

^Not quite lol.
I think the reason is that many of the raters are NoLimits designers themselves (obviously), and they refuse to accept the fact that somebody else is better than them. I'll admit that I used to be one of those people, and recently I've downloaded very few coasters on this site, because I still do sort of resent that fact. However, on some other exchange sites, there are coasters that are so much better than mine, that I almost have to accept it. But isn't it also sort of human nature to make somebody else feel bad? Just a little?

If you're rating coasters badly because they are better than yours that's just being a poor sport, plain and simple.

I download all my coasters from coastersims, where a lot of them are a lot better than mine. I don't rate them badly because of that, I rate coasters on the basis of "how would I feel if this was real" or "what would it really feel like to be on this ride?" I also use better coasters for ideas for my future coasters...kind of like a learning tool.
Rating poorly because you're jealous of other people's skill is pretty low...

That's not what I was saying. I was saying that I still resent that fact that people are better than me. Nowhere in my post did I say that I rate coasters down because of that. In fact, recently I have been much more lenient on my ratings than I have been on the past. However, as I said I used to be one of the people that would rate down because they're jealous. I thought only a select few people were better than me, and those rides got a better rating from me. Something that IMO many if not all new designers do, although possibly for only a few days or weeks. I still pride myself on being one of the most critical judges I know, but that doesn't mean I rate down because of my personal feelings. I rate down (possibly to much at times) for imperfections in the track, support hits, outrageous g's, etc. Also, the first coasters I rated on this site were my best friend's, and, having had NL for only a few days, had no idea what to expect form these creations. I rode his and was like, WOW!, and gave it a ten, even though it didn't deserve even a seven by my current standards. The next coaster I rated was by someone else, and can you guess what I gave it? Yep, about a 6, because A) I didn't know who he/she was, B) I didn't have a "trained eye", and C) I felt like it. I rode the same ride again about 6 months later and considered revising my previous rating and changing it to an 8, but I was too lazy. Possibly not the same reason as the discussion is about, but IMO it's close enough.

Also, I try my very best not to let my personal feelings get in the way of my ratings, unless of course it's by a known Michigan fan.

^Haha.

Dyl, I think go_me and Wildefyre pretty much summed up your question. Plus if anyone wants to add anything, they can, but I'm also moving this into the No Limits General talk area.

Dyl, welcome to the boards.

That's a shame that the throwing of scores would be going on. It would be fair to judge based on G's. Real life has proved you could still have RCT like effects on a ride like the slight bend right back into the station Villian has, the lifts at the end of the rides on Ninja and Adventure Express. You could even have tires push your coaster during the course like on some Asian coasters or a lift halfway up a hill to pull your train to top like on a Schwarzkopf portable.

In RCT there were people that were better than me but I really didn't care. Maybe they have too much extra time in their mom's basement. I had fun recreating rides and making my own. Many of my own were too extreme, which disappointed me but I move on. At times I didn't feel inspired or self confident. Sometimes it clicked and I got a great design. I still dont' know how to make theming in RCT but I don't care.

Dyl, the coaster fanbase is very sarcastic. I dont know if your a newcomer to coasters or a longtime fan, but the Fanatics, and I mean FANATICS, can be very critical about it. So just try to ignore it, life is not fair.

If you're uploading to CoasterSims, that should be expected. They can be absolutely cruel there.
If you're not uploading there, I would not advise you to start.

CS will no doubt rip you a new one and cram it full of spam and flames.

I kinda like the techinical feedback, because it's a good way to learn where your faults are.

When I judge a coaster, the first two things I look for are track imperfections(noticable jerks and pumps, curved lifts/brakes/station, etc.) and collisions. When I am suspicious of a ride's clearences, I do the tunnel test. Then I look at G-forces, track layout, creativity, etc.

I try top be as objective as possible.

IMO posting at CS is the best way to improve. It depends on what you want from the game...if you're interested in throwing something together and having your ride praised, many sites are great for that. At CS, most decently experienced raters (and there are more there than most or all other sites) respect effort, but are still truthful in their ratings. So, if you want to become the best designer possible... post on CS! I absolutely love it. I've grown so much as a designer, and much of it is because I've considered everyone's comments on what I've uploaded. Yes, you may get harsher ratings at CS. But, I've found you also will get the most helpful ratings there too, in general.

I also like posting on several different sites. I think that gives you a good range of opinions. Consider trying that?

btw, if you can take it, take the negative comments and pwn those people by using whatever they say to make your next ride have that much less they can say bad about it. I dislike negative feedback initially as much as the next guy, but in the end, sometimes those have been the ones that have helped the most. Don't think all the feedback from raters there is negative either; many people, especially someone like say Jeremy Thompson in particular, rate many rides and include invaluable thoughts and feedback, all in a very helpful manner. Keep working hard and listening to comments, and more and more people like him will see your potential/skills/effort and rate to help you out even more.

BTW, despite what you may have heard, in my experience people are not nasty in their comments on CS. If they are, there is a button you can press and the staff there will check it out to see if it both fits criteria, and isn't putting you down.

With what dcs said, ratings [especially at CS] are there to help the designer improve. Being human, and using an imperfect "simulator" there will ALWAYS be something to improve on. Do your best, ignore the negative comments, look for criticism to help make yourself better as a designer.

The ratings are there to help, and they're usually pretty okay if your obviously new at it. But if you get much better, you'll be pounded to the ground with nit-picking and nagging (Xibalba comes to mind).
IMO, they're a little on the harsh side there.
