I was watching Attack of The Show today and saw a lot on the new DVD players. They are will be the next gen in DVD's. What do you think is better Blu-Ray or HD-DVD?

Blu-ray, because it has a higher data capacity.

HD-DVD, what difference does a few pixels make? Sony's Blu-Ray will flop just like Betamax. And Blu-Ray is what Betamax was to VHS/VCR's. Besides, Betamax tapes looked like giant iPods...

Blu-Ray is going to have the upper hand. I was reading about the first two laptops that will be released with Blu-Ray and the other with HD-DVD with prices both above $3000, the only difference is you won't be able to write HD-DVDs, just watch them, which in my opinion is pointless. I think Blu-Ray will emerge as the victorious one, but who really cares, high definition DVD playback isn't going to matter until a few years from now.

Most people can't afford to just chunk their TV to go out and buy a HDTV. I think the whole HDTV/DVD thing is going to take a long time to really catch on with the general populas, not just the tech geeks and the rich.

Wes, it already has "cuaght on." Don't be like the people who still think DVD's are a fad. High def is the next generation, but it's still too damn expensive for me to afford.

That's what I'm saying...Neither Blu-Ray nor HD-DVD is really going to matter much until 2008 or 2009 when a good majority of the population owns a HDTV. Dont' get me wrong, a lot of people are getting them now, but give it a few more years and I would think that HDTVs will take over and that's when these two forms of high definition DVD playback will really matter, but until then it's really not important until you own a HDTV.

Of what you have been saying, I have to both will cost too much money for eveybody. I just looked at the cost and on Sony it said it will cost $1,000 USD that is way too much for me!

I'd say to wait at least a year until the prices drop to reasonable levels as they always do a year or so after a new technology comes out. Although I do think I have seen an HD DVD player for $400 which isn't outrageous right now. Persoanlly though I think it's too exspenive still and won't look considerably better unless you have a HDTV which most people still do not have yet. So it's best to wait a little and do some good research online and in tech magazines and then see which would appear to have the upperhand, not just in specs but in sales. You don't want to buy the one that isn't as popular and then might fail. I'm waiting and that's what I'd recommend. Oh, while I'm thinking about it, it just came to me. I'm not sure if some movies will be on one format and not the other. I remember hearing that studios could or would only support one or the other and not make discs for the other format. Obviously Sony movies would be for the Blu Ray and not HD DVD for example. So that also could complicate matters.

Personally I believe that HD-DVD will win this battle. The actual manufacturing costs of HD-DVD's is significantly lower than Blu-Ray hence the movies you buy in stores will be cheaper from the start which I think plays a big role in consumer acceptance. It's rare that the more expensive medium gets widespread consumer acceptance. As for the laptops, those will not decide the outcome as they are, in my opinion, only a very small piece of the market. |

I really don't think anybody will be able to predict how this battle will turn out regardless of Sony's past failures or whatever you reason you have for thinking Blu-Ray will fail. From what I have heard, 5 of the major movie studios are backing Blu-Ray so that could add an interesting twist to things, so I wouldn't predict which is going to be better yet especially considering the fact that neither of the two formats are going to mean anything to anybody until they have an HDTV. BTW, give both formats a few years and the price will go down drastically. I think all of us can remember when DVD players first came out and the high end ones were up to $500 dollars, but now you can get them as cheap as under $100. It's new technology and right now only the people with HDTVs are going to gain any advantage from them so that's why they are so expensive, but once HDTV takes over the market, I'm sure the price will go down for both formats withink 2-3 years maybe. |

thats normal. Remember DVD has been aronud since 1993 or 1994, but it only got popular/cheap as recently as 2000/2001. I prefer HD-DVD, but i think with the PS3 blu-ray has a strong base. People want to play movies on their PS3. It does depend on ps3 selling as much as ps2, but it's possible. Xbox 360 should have had HD-DVD built in from the start. Imagine if HD DVD does win, those ps3 will be useless. At least with pcs and standalone units, someone will eventualyl make a combo drive. Really these companies should be locked in a room together until they agree on a standard format. DVD burners used to have at least 5 different formats, and theres still two of them now! It was good to see sony finally admit that their ATRAC was rubbish and support mp3s a few years ago. MP3 should be the only standard. Last edited by Skye; 05-18-2006 at 04:11 PM. |

Blue-Ray has the goods, HD-DVD has name recognition. How about a universal player... :-) Sony should know better on this... Beta anyone??? |
