Official Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD

Hi.

This is a thread so that the few people who actually give a crap about the format wars can whine back and forth, and leave the general console talk thread to games and things gamers actually care about. Please continue all discussion of Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD in here.

KTHANX.

Here is a great article/summary of the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD war for those who are lost on the subject:

http://roughlydrafted.com/RD/TechQ30...D-DVD_War.html

Acer joins Blu-Ray:

Sharp will a standalone Blu-Ray player:
http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=452

Phillips announces a standalone Blu-Ray player:
http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=451

BenQ announces a standalone Blu-Ray player:
http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=447

Samsung and Sony are also updating their Blu-Ray players to support 1080p24/60 video, 7.1 audio output, and HDMI 1.3.

The president of Panasonic Europe was quoted saying that Blu-Ray would indefinitely be the winner of the war.

Aren't Blu-Rays going to be irrelevent soon? I thought I heard that somewhere.

No way it comes close to HD.

Man, this is like, reverse psychology.

Blu-Ray's irrelevant soon? I don't even think they're relevant yet. Not a lot of the general populace owns a HD TV set, not a lot of people have $400 dollars to shell out on a player, and not a lot of people are willing to replace their entire DVD collection.

I vote its too new.

No way it comes close to HD? Um dude, Blu-Ray IS HD, 1080p.

"Official" in front of this thread. hehehe I'll wait while people waste their money and end up on the losing side. It's enough for me already to collect a zillion standard dvds.

I personally buy all my movies in Blu-Ray now if they are availible on it. Since I use the PS3 the games already came on it and that is what originally got me liking the format much more than DVDs. I recently bought a Blu-Ray compatible laptop and plan on getting a Blu-Ray drive for my desktop this Christmas. On a 1080p TV, there is a difference between Blu-Ray movies and DVDs, not only in picture but also in sound. It's only a matter of time before they come down in price and eventually outsell DVDs (which will be some time of course, but the same thing happened with VHS and DVD).

Yeah, but DVD's offered new ways of convenience with watching movies, where as Blu Ray and HD DVD don't.

I don't know if either will take off, I think its too soon.

I don't plan to invest any money in either of these formats. I could care less if it is that more high definition than a regular DVD. I'm perfectly fine to watch my non high definition dvds because in reality I don't see any difference. We got HD for our tv, and yes our tv did meet all the requirements, but I didn't see a difference in picture at all; in fact its a big waste of money having the special HD cable box when nobody uses its "amazing" channels.

I dunno... seems like a big difference to me.

Okay, but this is looking at the computer screen 1-2 feet away from your face. I really doubt this would make a huge difference 8-10 feet away.

^ And no, I usually try to only view the HD channels with my cable box.

Well I'm glad you try to watch all your HD channels Martin. Kudos. I'm still sticking with what I said before.

It makes more... because that already blurry image is stretched 50" wide. With a big TV HD is a must as anything low rez is horribly stretched.

Thanks. Seeing as HD Channels are free with Optimum and I have an HDTV I am in a win/win situation.

And if I really wanted to, I could find a bunch of links and info of those supporting HD DVD like Paramount, Universal and companies making players but what's the point. You'll then find more links about something and then I'll look for some and it ends up in stupid arguments. We're not going to make any money from it so I don't feel like wasting a lot of time discussing it when it just ends up into argument.

I'm more than willing to just wait and see what happens. Besides, I'm not buying either nor a combo player until the price comes down and I've gotten a HD player in the first place.
