Mac Users: I need some help

I got a question for you Mac OSX users.

I have a external hard drive that I have (Operates through USB) and right now for some reason I can only read files off of it, not write them.

I was wondering if you guys know how to properly format it so I can read and write files on it. What utility should I use? If there isn't a utility that can do this in OSX where can I download one?

Any and all help is appreciated.

Are you getting an error when you try to drag and drop files on to the HD? If so, what does the message read?

Check the HDs permissions. Unix and its variants allows you to fine tune your permissions. I think its under get info when you shift click or right click the drive.( depending if you have a 3rd party 2 or 3 button mouse or an Apple single button.)

Was it formatted in Windows NTFS? If so, that's likely your culprit.

OS X, like many other UNIX OSes (provided support is compiled into its kernel), have NTFS Read-only support. They do not have write support at all. The reason being is that NTFS is mostly proprietary to Microsoft.

If you need the hard drive to work in both Windows and Mac, it should be formatted FAT32. You might be able to format it in OS X as such.
