Porter Wagoner (the one responsible for Dolly Parton) Dies

I thought I'd start this, since Porter is a Grand Ole Opry member, and a part of the Country Music Hall of Fame. He died Sunday at the age of 80.

He had just been diagnosed with lung cancer. He was the one responsible for giving Dolly Parton her start (without him, you essentially wouldn't have Dollywood, because you wouldn't have Dolly).

I had the opportunity to meet him at the gate while we were awaiting our flight (we were on the same flight to NYC... mine was for business though, he was going to perform there). He was frail and in a wheelchair then, and I left him alone while others hounded him for his autograph. We did exchange head nods, and that's about it.

I'm surprised no one started this thread, and noted the connection with Dolly.

I had a great uncle that always referred to Porter Wagoner as "Sparkle Plenty" because of his love for rhinestone outfits.

And, given the fact that the last few months have found me liking old skool country more and more- I probably ought to go back and give him another listen.

I've seen Dolly's bronze statue at the county courthouse in Sevierville and even took time to walk through the Dolly House @ Dollywood. I heard how she was discovered. That's unfortunate.
