Ok, it was suggested on another thread that someone create a spoiler thread for the new movie Cloverfield. So if you don't want to have the movie spoiled for you, go away, be gone, get lost fool!
So going into this movie I had no idea it was gonna be Blair Witch style. Which at first made me wonder how good it would turn out but I was extremely suprised. There's was one moment of hesitation for me when you would start seeing the tail take down the bridge or quick clips of part of the body of the monster that I though it was a Godzilla movie in disguise. But no it was forever better than any Godzilla movie could ever be. Pretty much from the time right before they go into the subway, to the very end of the movie is just amazing.
The one part where they're going up in the one building to cross over to the other. Oh it urked me when he went for the elevator!! The building has another building leaning against it, and there's a huge monster running around tearing the city up and you consider the elevator as an option?!
I'll have more to add after I collect my thoughts.

I thought the part where Hud is trapped between the line of fire of the military and the freaking monster was intense! And I totally wasn't expecting Jason to get killed of in that style... that sucks! I also thought it was particularly different that there really was no plot built up or development at all. I thought it as cool how they basically just threw you into the action. The monster reminded me of something that could have been from Men In Black. And when the movie started with the color screen, the guy next to me went, "Aw, man? Are you serious?" Then he realized why it was like that...

COLDPLAY - The Viva La Vida Tour 2008 | Houston, TX :: 11.18.2008 And in the end we lie awake and we dream of making our escape.
I'm thinking along the lines of the Alien series where it hatches from inside your body and bursts out. I think it must've happened before to victims and that's why the military knew about it and reacted like they did.

2. Did the monster jump at the helicopter to make it spin out of control?
I'm not positive but it looked like it stood up quickly and reach out or swung at it.

3. Did anyone else find Hud absolutely freaking annoying?
At first, I did a little bit. But his character grew on me and I found him funy at times and mostly believable given the situation.

4. What did you think of the ending?
Good for the most part and it did remind me of the Blair Witch with the ending. I couldn't help but wonder if there might have been some small chance they survived considering the camera did.
I liked the ending but I wouldne also liked to have seen some explanation to either what happened or at least a conclusion to the monster getting killed. Did the final blast kill him and ultimately what kind of destruction was brougt upon New York and possibly surrounding area. Was it an isolated incident. And even if the main monster was killed, there were plenty more of the smaller breed of creatures roaming around.
I would've liked a news type program approach to the end hust going over how it ended. For all we know, the creatures weren't killed or even the main monster and the military was just watching the video as a way of trying to study it and find a weakness. Maybe that's the idea though, to not let us know for sure if it's over or not. It could always leave the door open for a sequel. There is plenty left to be explained if they so choose. Or it can stand on it's own as a great exciting movie.
Saw the movie twice...love it. It's just so unique. Yes, it's done in the style of Blair Witch through a retrieved "recorded video," but the acting was so natural and not forced and most of the camera movement is pretty realistic given the situations in the movie.
I also enjoy how the movie doesn't explain what the monsters are, where they came from, and what happened later. It's perfect. Most people that hate how the movie doesn't answer questions and want typical Hollywood movie "closure" don't realize the point of the movie is as if you were watching a real amateur home video of something. Explaining anything after the movie or even trying to do it in the movie itself would completely ruin it.
The monsters were also really cool and original. The CGI was not tacky or cheap and I love how they integrated it so well into a "shaky hand held video" style of filming. Really unique monsters that can't be explained by referencing other movie monsters. There's really nothing else like them.
At first I thought there was just that one large monster with the smaller spider-like monsters coming off of it. Then it occured to me that there were at least two skyscraper-sized monsters. The one that killed Hud had a flat face with those balloon things on the side of its face and the other was the one when the group was caught in the middle of the crossfire with the military -- it had a mouth that looked like a parrot's beak and had longer lankier legs.
As for Hud, his character was executed flawlessly. Integrated comic relief without trying too hard or being corny. You could really get a feel as if this guy was just goofy and socially awkward and not just some actor overdoing his role.
It's definitely going to become the box office #1 this weekend and probably the next.
Yeah, Marlena's head totally exploded! When the three remaining characters were escorted away by the military personnel, I remember him telling them that there was nothing they could do. I also thought the scene when they lifted Beth off the rebarb was pretty gruesome.
I think that when the monster 'came back alive' after being hit by the bombs jumped up and happened to hit the helicopter. Man, that sucks. I enjoyed how it kept the monster very vague and mysterious.
Did anyone stay after the credits? I didn't, but I read online that supposedly you hear a voice (Rob's?) say, "It's still alive." See . I also thought the marketing for this movie was brilliant... as a Marketing major, that would be awesome to do!

In the very last footage shot from Coney Island, you see something fall into the ocean – presumably the monster (it happens on the right side of the screen). This leads you to believe that the monster is extraterrestrial????
Also, there's a back story to this movie involving Slusho --- which was believed to be the the company Rob was going to work for in Japan as Vice-President... There's even a slusho website, check it out by googling "slusho"
If you check out myspace, you'll find all the characters have pages...
There was also talk that a follow-up to this movie will happen, which will show what happens to, Lily. Also that, perhaps, there will also be other "footage" found or brought forth...Again, Slusho has something to do with all this, too...

Interesting stuff and quite fun!
Thats exactly what I was wondering. What happened to Lily? When she ended up seperated from the group I thought she was done for. It hit me long after the movie that hey, she's probably still alive.
I really liked Hud. Interesting how you can end up enjoying a charcter so much that spends so little time on camera.

Personally, I hope they don't do a sequel. But more of release more advertising or DVD specials with news reports of the days and weeks after everything happened.

Don't get me wrong, I thought the movie was great, the same for the ending. I guess it's just my natural curiosity wanting toknow a little more. I'm glad they kept the creature's origin mysterious and left to our imagination. I was just wondering what ended up happening, if the monster(s) were even killed.
Although ending like they did was very good andi liked the ending. I also liked Blair Witch and that ending even though most didn't. The one reason I do think the ending of Blair Witch was more appropriate than the ending of Cloverfield is because nobody would know what happened after the final seconds of Blair Witch. With Cloverfield, obviously somebody, whether it's the military or civilians, they would know what happened after the end of the tape. So that's how I can see a conclusion being given. Again, I do like the movie as it is. No complaints there.
And I did notice the possible second monster looked different. So it makes me wonder if the first monster was killed and possibly there are more monsters out there. Great stuff that makes you thnk a lot.
I like it how it was cause I think if they switched over to some sort of newcasting or something for closure it would of ended ackward. They stuck with their hand-held sytle the whole movie, to end it with something else would of ruined it in my opinion.
I love how the whole thing was recorded over an "old tape" and you caught glimpses of it throughout. Had it not cut to amusement park at the end and left it at the explosion I would of been a little dissappointed. Seeing the charcters in that context before everything that happened was a great way to end it.
