| | | We had band camp two weeks ago, and at school camp last week.
I've already memorized the opener after having it two weeks, and can play through the entire show.

| | | I played clarinet and trumpet in school, but that was a long time ago. These days, I'm learning to play guitar.
In addition to my guitars, I also haver a trumpet, a cornet and a flugelhorn.

| | | Yeah, seriously. That sound isn't just unique. In my opinion, it's the most beautiful voice of all the brass.

| | | I was at All-State camp this weekend for choir. Holy crap, this is tough music. They said this is the hardest program they've seen the ten years they've had the camp.
I'm SO glad I know it pretty well now, because our director simply is not going to be able to teach it.
The first six bars of Careless Carols are counted as follows:
1234/123/12/12345/123/1234
And we sing on the strangest beats. At one point, we repeat the same melody over and over for over two pages.
In A Boy and a Girl, we are almost always in parallel fifths with the basses and the sopranos and altos are usually in seconds, which are huge no-nos in Theory Land.
But in addition to being so difficult, this has to be one of the most beautiful All-State programs in the last decade. I could listen to I Gondolieri all day (it's on YouTube if you want to hear it).
It's going to be weird to start learning show choir music now that I have this in my head.

| | | I think it's at 120 bpm. The big problem is that we come in on beat two of the first measure, hold through beat one of measure two, come back in right away, hold until beat one of measure 4, sing two half notes to finish measure 4, sing all the way through measure 5, and sing all the way through measure 6. All that while the basses have a completely unrelated melody that makes it all a ton more confusing.
Later, we sing the following:
(measures: 3/4-5/8-3/4-3/4-5/8-3/4-3/4)
x=rest
/=measure change
x x laughter/sing x x x x x/sing sing x/like twinkles of/light on the ripples/x ripples ripples/sing song song
That at 120 bpm with this rhythm:
x=eighth rest
X=quarter rest
e=eighth
q=quarter
X X ee/e x x x x/ee ee X/q ee ee/e e e ee/X ee ee/q e x e x
That's difficult to imagine, but trust me, it's harder to sing.
EDIT: Oh yes, and that's all on two notes - eb and dn above middle c.

| | | It's an Andrew Rindfleisch piece. Well, it sounds really, really pretty when it's all put together. It's like Eric Whitacre, but lively. Each individual part feels completely wrong, but all together, it is tremendously beautiful.
We (Iowa All-State, if I get in) will only be the second choir ever to sing Careless Carols. It was commissioned by a Wisconsinite director a while ago and premiered in the Spring, so you probably won't find it anywhere.
This is the original poem:
"Sing the song of the moment in careless carols, in the transient light of the day;
Sing of the fleeting smiles that vanish and never look back;
Sing of the flowers that bloom and fade without regret.
Weave not in memory’s thread the days that would glide into nights.
To the guests that must go bid God-speed, and wipe away all traces of their steps.
Let the moments end in moments with their cargo of fugitive songs.
With both hands snap the fetters you made with your own heart chords;
Take to your breast with a smile what is easy and simple and near.
Today is the festival of phantoms that know not when they die.
Let your laughter flush in meaningless mirth like twinkles of light on the ripples;
Let your life lightly dance on the verge of Time like a dew on the tip of a leaf.
Strike in the chords of your harp the fitful murmurs of moments."
(Rabindranath Tagore)

| | | ^hey thats cool. Is it kinda hard?
Orchestra has started today. Unfortunately, tonight they don't need the percussionists. So I'm still at home here on TN. But that's not so bad. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
