| Country Music
Just wondering, but who here likes country music? I once didn't like it, but the more I listen to it, the more I like it. Kind of a old song, but just listen to this. Just a great song, and so sad. Here's another one of my favorite songs. Im sure everyone knows Rascal Flatts from Cars "Life is a Highway" but another good one is Every Day. |

Well, to clarify, there are three basic types of music that are called "Country music." 1) REAL Country music: Banjos and fiddles. 2) Honky Tonk: What most people mean when they say Country music. People like Hank Sr and Junior. Some is pretty good, some is unlistenable, most is pretty middle of the road. 3) Frustrated Rock artists: People that want to play rock/pop, but just can't cut it in the world they want to be in. So, they buy a hat, claim to be country, and sometimes, people buy into it. Garth Brooks and Rascal Flatts are classic examples of this. Listenable songs from this type are few and far between. Garth's First CD was great, the second was decent, and everything since has been positively craptastic. Some offshoots of the "frustrated rocker" are the "I'm going to be a comic book characature of country" phonies- See Gretchen Wilson. And don't forget the "There's nothing country about me or my music, but I'm country just because I say I am." See Big and Rich. I don't hate all modern "country" music, just most of it. Brad Paisley is OK, and when he paired with Allison Krauss (Who most certainly IS country) the "Whiskey Lullaby" song turned out very nice. Your opinions may vary- listen to whatever you like. I'm just giving my opinion.

Who knows who Chet Atkins is? How about Porter Wagoner? Then, how about Eddy Arnold? Brian, I already know you know. Speaking of Gretchen Wilson, she just got her GED in Lebanon (she lives, oddly enough, in Wilson County, where Lebanon is). By the way, Lebanon is pronounced "Leb-uh-nun" or "Leb-nun" down here, and you can get shot for pronouncing it "Leb-ah-non".

"Loving country music is the new hating country music." - a friend of mine I can't stand what Brian puts into categories 2 and 3, but I love bluegrass . Railroad Earth (badass) Last edited by Cobra; 05-20-2008 at 07:37 PM. |

I like older Country. I don't care for how the genre became so pop-ish in the 90s, though that whole movement had roots as far back as the late 70s. I'm also somewhat of a bluegrass fan. |

Never heard of Chet Adkins, but any relation to Trace Adkins? I like the Honky Tonk Badonkadonk song haha. I guess I like mainstream country. I like a lot of Keith Urban, ones that are on the radio. Anyone like Lonestar? I think "Walking In Memphis" is an awesome song, and I think half of the people in the world have the song "Amazed" as their song about their girlfriend.

I like country. I really dig "Texas Country" with acts like Cross Canadian Ragweed, Randy Rogers Band, Wade Bowen, Reckless Kelly, Bart Crow Band, Bleu Edmondson, Eli Young Band. Its a whole different world out there. None of these bands are mainstream either. Most of these bands home are Texas, obvious, but a lot come out of Oklahoma and the Red Dirt Scene also. If you have the chance, check some of those bands out. Can't forget Ryan Bingham. He is an up and coming Texas Country star. |

So are Chesney, McGraw, Brooks, and Montgomery-Gentry mainstream? I am guessing so. I am pretty new to country, I used to hate it, but now I am almost only listening to country stations. I have only really gotten into the new stuff, but I'm working my way back-in-time.

I can't stand country. It's basically poppy blues. Ugh. I love blues and Rock, yet I despise country. Not entirely sure why.

Mostly the mainstream country is "pop" Rascal Flatts, Carrie Underwood and them. I really don't want to call George Strait and Garth Brooks mainstream, since their on the radio, but they are pretty much full breed country. lol.

Don't forget about Reba. I would not call her mainstream either.

| Uh no- I'm pretty sure Chet ATKINS isn't related to Trace ADKINS. And you've all heard Chet play guitar, you just probably don't know it. Ever hear of a guy named Presley? In addition to being his producer for a while, Chet Atkins played lead guitar on "Heartbreak Hotel." Nice to hear from other Bluegrass fans. If you ever get the chance, get a hold of some Dixie Chicks music when they had the GOOD singer. Before Natalie Mains joined, they were a bluegrass act, and very good at it.

| Steve another town close to you that you want to watch the pronunciation of is Lafayette (Where the tornado hit so bad earlier this year) If you say "Lah-FEE-et," you'll be QUICKLY corrected. Acceptable ways to say it are "Luh- FETT" or the more upscale way "Lah-FAY-ut"

| You just listed off the bands I hear all the time here down in Houston. CCR and Eli Young, especially. Reckless Kelly, too.

Ahh, which country? Seriously, used to be when I was younger, it did not matter WHICH country it was, classic country, eighties country, or even at the time current country, it began to play and I would be out like a light within 5 minutes. Then again, in the nineties, I met some friends who were into country, and my introduction to country was made through Garth Brooks. A couple of years later, I moved to Virginia and subsequently North Carolina and I resumed my radio career - IN Country radio. So that began my appreciation for country as a general format, and through format tweaks and format changes, I got into some of the 80s country and then classic country. So, while I really have to be in the mood to listen to country, over the years an appreciation has grown for country, be it the current "Modern" or Mainstream Country, as well as the more active Country Dance Music, Country-Country (in my perspective this would be 80s Country), as well as classic country (pre 1980). But with my roots tied in to the Top 40 market while I was growing up, I still much more prefer something with a beat and a rythmn that is more reminiscent of dance music. But there are some older country songs that I do enjoy. |

I really don't care for Alan Jackson, but he summed up the whole "modern Country" scene pretty well in the song "Gone Country." People that can't make it in their chosen style, so they buy a hat, call themselves country, and make it big. I'm not saying I don't like some of the music, because I do. I'm just saying that no matter what they call it, it isn't country music. I like Trace Adkins (no relation to Chet Atkins, LOL) and Montgomery Gentry quite a bit, but they're Southern rock- not country. I like Brad Paisley, but he's pop- not country.

Some mainstream country you can't help but dance to though. I hear the song by Big and Rich "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" all the time, and its just a fun song to sing to. Probably one of my favorite songs of all time that is not really traditional country, but a good song that i am particularly fond of being from Georgia... |

James R, those are the real bands that everyone needs to listen to. Pretty much all those bands write their own songs also. Though they do cover other artist here and there.

I like Dont Blink. Very good song. And another song that just came out is more mainstream, but the new Carrie Underwood song "Last Name." Very upbeat and a catchy song. She is probably the most successful American Idol. Anyone like Sugarland? They don't seem to mainstream. I heard that song Stay and Baby Girl.

I like Sugarland both songs you mentioned are great. The song "Life In A Northern Town" with them, Little Big Town, and someone else who I can't think of, seems kind of dumb to me though.

Coming from the midwest where I mostly listened to rap and alternative rock, I can't help but find country music girly.. I go to school at Baylor, and most people there do listen to country. It's (bear)able (pun intended), but it weirds me out when a guy says "I love Taylor Swift." Even the male country singers sound geared toward girls to me (most of my friends in NE who listened to country were girls, that may have something to do with it). Of course, there are some good ole country songs to dance to, but I'd never listen to it on my own.

I can handle bluegrass, since it's reminiscent of Irish folk music, although the twang can get annoying. The rest of country music is complete crap to me.
