Question Know any well made horror films?

Hey, people. I'm looking for some good titles. I am trying to expand my Horror collection. I am kinda of starved for some good Horror films that are well made and not just relying on guts and gore. Does anyone out there know of any horror movies with good actors, direction, tension and suspense? Know any horror movies where we can really care about the characters? Any not-so-well known movies would be welcome also. I know there are a lot of movies out there that fell just under the radar. One that I recently just watched was "Frailty" with Bill Paxton.

Any and all thriller/suspense movies would be welcome too--any decade (40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's+). Thanks!

I know that Halloween scared the crap out of me.
And it doesn't really have as much guts and gore as newer horror movies but it has a lot of suspense.

Yes, Halloween is good. I have the 2 disc anniversary edition. The documentary is just as long as the movie. It is very well made.

Personally, I like the Resident Evil movie (The Original, not the sequels). It's not exactly super scary, but its fun and pretty creative.

Don't get Underworld...so confusing and lame.

I agree with Chris L's choices. The Strangers is a great horror movie.

I'll give you the first one, and maybe 2 and 3, but the newer ones are hilariously awful.

I have to agree actually, The 1st one is the best and it generally went down hill from there.

Is there any certain type of horror movies you like? A few movies I can think of offhand are the George Romero zombie flicks such as Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead. Land of the Dead was pretty good but Diary of the Dead was pretty lame and I'd almost think he lost his touch. Hopefully his next one due out later this year is better.

Other movies I like that you may not have seen are Ginger Snaps 1&2, the third isn't as good but it's been a while since I seen it. High Tension (Haute Tension), are a couple others I like. One recent movie that got a lot of good reviews among horror fans but that I haven't seen yet is Hatchett. I have the DVD but didn't get around to putting it the DVD player to watch it.

When I'm home later, I'll look through my collection and give you some more.

I want a film that is smart, maybe a twist at the end, something that will make me jump/laugh a little. I know that is a lot to ask, esp from Hollywood in this day and age with remake after remake. The George Romero films are good. I heard that High Tension was good. I read all the reviews from viewers on Amazon and almost every single one tore Hatchet to shreds. I really wanted to see it. I may rent it but I'm definitely not going to buy it. I don't like a horror film for the gore alone. I couldn't care less if it had tons of gore in it or not. The first Halloween was excellent and had very little gore.

That being said, I will probably go out and see the Friday the 13th remake just to see it for myself. Im anxious to see if they make Jason the killer or his mother.

The Birds remake is coming out in 2011 I think also. I saw the Pyscho remake and fell asleep during it, it was so bad. The production team says that the Birds remake wont be like the first one at all. Alfred Hitchcock just took the idea of the birds attacking from the originall novella. According to what I have read, the new movie will be closer to the original story.
