Movies & Movie Theatres

As I've been working in this industry for quite some time, I've found myself becoming somewhat distant from the average moviegoer. I was wondering if I could get a little insight into what others felt about going to movie theatres.

This is more of an informal survey to get an idea of what you like, dislike, and to discuss what can be improved. As home theatre systems get more advanced, it's becoming harder for the cinema industry to draw customers into the theatres. It's only a matter of time before advancements like polarized 3D makes it way into the household, drawing yet another "cinema-only" thing away from the theatre chains.

With that said, I was wondering if you could give me some insight into your thoughts.
-How do you feel about movie theatres in general?
-Are you drawn to the theatre by the movie, or for the theatre experience?
-How do you choose which theatre you go to? Which theatre do you go to most often? Do you have another option/would you prefer another option?
-We all know pricing is a sour spot with the push towards $10 per ticket, but given the studio demands and high cost of goods, what would you, the customer, suggest to protect profits while encouraging customers to come back? (I've suggested things like date-night specials: $25 for two tickets, a drink, and popcorn)
-Have you experienced a newer 3D movie? What movie? What did you think of the technology/picture/etc? (I'm avoiding asking how the movie was, as there is a lot of criticism towards lacking plots in 3D movies)
-Have you ever seen a movie with digital projection? (aka, no film) Where did you watch this movie? What did you think of the image quality?
-How do you choose whether to stay home and watch a movie or to go out to watch a movie?
-What items do you think movie theatres should improve in, or add to, their concession stand?
-Have you ever watched a movie in a sold-out auditorium? Were you comfortable? Have you left an auditorium that was sold out due to comfort? Lack of available adjacent seating?
-Are you interested in going to a movie theatre for things like Concerts or Live 3D events?
-How often do you watch movies? How often do you go to a theatre to watch movies?
-How do you get showtime information? Is there a general time you prefer going to the movies? Do you take advantage of Matinee pricing?

Like I said before, this in an informal survey. Feel free to add thoughts or comments, or omit those which may not apply to you.

Thank you.

I NEVER chose to go to theaters -- I far rather rent DVDs than go to the movies for so many reasons:

1) I am not a movie buff to begin with.

2) I don't like to just sit there for hours and wait for the movie to be over.

3) DVDs are so much better value for the dollar. Theaters are very expensive.

4) I have Pepsi and better quality snacks at home without having to pay outrageous amount they charge.

5) It's always much better to watch DVDs in the comfort of my own apartment on my couch and it's quieter. Theaters are always crowded, cramped, noisy, and just uncomfortable. This is actually the biggest reason and decider for me.

6) I can watch the DVD at MY pace -- I can stop, pause, and rewind whenever I wish.

7) I can watch all the special features on my DVD as well as the subtitles and commentary -- something they don't show you at theaters.

8) I don't like the massive screen or really loud sound effects at theaters. I know I'm one of the very few people and probably the only one on the site that feels this way.

Twice in my life I reluctantly went to theaters after being persuaded to go try it out (age 13 and 19 years) and intensely disliked it both times....I will never do it again.

-How do you feel about movie theaters in general?
No problem with them. I think they're a fun option for a night out with friends, family, or significant others.

-Are you drawn to the theater by the movie, or for the theater experience?
The movie, if the movie is only playing at the "crappy" theater in town, I'll go see it there.

-How do you choose which theater you go to? Which theater do you go to most often? Do you have another option/would you prefer another option?
Distance and price. I mostly go to Cineplex Odeon theaters since they aren't that bad with ticket prices, usually have good deals, and have a great movie goer reward program. I try to avoid AMC, as their ticket prices are a bit much.

Deals like what you suggest are perfect. I usually get a coupon for a date night (Two tickets, pop corn, and two drinks for $26) every few months from my cell phone company; it's also one of the rewards you can get with their movie goer points.

-Have you experienced a newer 3D movie? What movie? What did you think of the technology/picture/etc? (I'm avoiding asking how the movie was, as there is a lot of criticism towards lacking plots in 3D movies)
Have not seen one yet, but will probably soon. I still want to see Coraline, Monsters Vs Aliens, and Up, so I will eventually.

-Have you ever seen a movie with digital projection? (aka, no film) Where did you watch this movie? What did you think of the image quality?
Not that I know of.

-How do you choose whether to stay home and watch a movie or to go out to watch a movie?
Some movies I just want to see on the big screen. Example, all superhero movies, Transformers, movies by favorite directors, with my favorite actors, etc. (Really, I just like going to movies)

-What items do you think movie theaters should improve in, or add to, their concession stand?
Theaters seem to have everything I could think of in their concession stands as is.

-Have you ever watched a movie in a sold-out auditorium? Were you comfortable? Have you left an auditorium that was sold out due to comfort? Lack of available adjacent seating?
Yes. I hate it. My friends and I once had to sit in completely different rows to see the movie. I can blame this partly on movie goers and partly on the theater. Movie goers for usually being dicks and not shifting one seat down to clear up some seats together. Theaters for not enforcing this; you have the power to tell people to move over a few seats so other groups can sit together.

-Are you interested in going to a movie theater for things like Concerts or Live 3D events?
No. If I'm not at a concert live, it's not a concert.

-How often do you watch movies? How often do you go to a theater to watch movies?
In the summer I can be at a movie once a week to once every two weeks, especially when a lot of movies I'm interested in are out. As for watching in general at home; when I'm bored, or just want to relax.

-How do you get showtime information? Is there a general time you prefer going to the movies? Do you take advantage of Matinee pricing?
Always use theater website for showtime info. I prefer early evening shows, or shows starting at around 6 or 7. I haven't seen a theater offer matinee pricing in years; I recently saw Adventureland at like 2:00pm and it was full price.

As long as the movie looks like something I will enjoy, I will probably go see it in theater. It's a good date and if you eat at home, or share some food, it's not bad for the price. My only beef with theaters, is like I said before, when people refuse to shift seats for other groups. I mean honestly, it's one or two seats, it's not going to change to the movie in any way. Theater employees need to start enforcing a rule so groups can sit together instead of having them leave and ask for their money back.

-How often do you watch movies? How often do you go to a theatre to watch movies?
I was last in a movie theatre in 2007. Hollywood has to really "wow" me to get me to see a movie in theatres.

-Have you ever watched a movie in a sold-out auditorium? Were you comfortable? Have you left an auditorium that was sold out due to comfort? Lack of available adjacent seating?
Twice. The only time I have left a movie was because of the film and not because of the seating/comfort.

-How do you feel about movie theatres in general?
Ridiculously overpriced. Whining about how much studios demand for films does not justify sixteen dollars for two drinks and one popcorn. I get the point- they don't want my money, The audince listened.

-Are you drawn to the theatre by the movie, or for the theatre experience?
When I go, which is very rarely, it's usually a combination (ie- a movie that's probably going to be better viewed on the big screen)

-How do you choose which theatre you go to? Which theatre do you go to most often? Do you have another option/would you prefer another option?
Usually the closest place the film is playing

-We all know pricing is a sour spot with the push towards $10 per ticket, but given the studio demands and high cost of goods, what would you, the customer, suggest to protect profits while encouraging customers to come back? (I've suggested things like date-night specials: $25 for two tickets, a drink, and popcorn)
I think we already covered the price gouging.

-Have you experienced a newer 3D movie? What movie? What did you think of the technology/picture/etc? (I'm avoiding asking how the movie was, as there is a lot of criticism towards lacking plots in 3D movies) No, but I need to. Daughter wants to see Monsters vs. Aliens

-Have you ever seen a movie with digital projection? (aka, no film) Where did you watch this movie? What did you think of the image quality? Not sure

-How do you choose whether to stay home and watch a movie or to go out to watch a movie?
40 bucks for two tickets, two drinks and one popcorn is a VERY compelling argument.

-What items do you think movie theatres should improve in, or add to, their concession stand?
Stop smoking crack when you set the prices

-Have you ever watched a movie in a sold-out auditorium? Were you comfortable? Have you left an auditorium that was sold out due to comfort? Lack of available adjacent seating? No, but darn near it. I'd rather wait a few weeks

-Are you interested in going to a movie theatre for things like Concerts or Live 3D events? Better places for concerts

-How often do you watch movies? How often do you go to a theatre to watch movies? I've probably been to theaters four times in the last three years. As I said- that audience listened.

-How do you get showtime information? Is there a general time you prefer going to the movies? Do you take advantage of Matinee pricing? Internet, earlier, and yes

I know I've been extremely critical of the prices, but movie theaters really need to look at the value they offer. A person can buy a DVD, a case of soda and enough popcorn to insulate a house for the "2 tickets, 2 drinks and one large popcorn" I mentioned. I guess what should really be asked is "How is attendance at theaters? Is it up? down? holding its' own?" If it's up or holding, then my arguments become a lot less relevant. But if it's down, then it might be time to realize that theaters are pricing themselves out of business.

How do you feel about movie theatres in general?
Indifferent really, just something to do to get out of the house. Especially when you live in a boring area like I do.

Are you drawn to the theatre by the movie, or for the theatre experience?
Movie, if it looks like a good movie I don't want to wait the additional 3-6 months for it to come to BD/DVD.

How do you choose which theatre you go to? Which theatre do you go to most often? Do you have another option/would you prefer another option?
After being spoiled by Blu-Ray's audio, I choose by which theater focuses on audio quality. Two of the four big theaters in my area have such atrocious audio its comparable to a VHS tape. Regardless, if a theater has high quality audio, its going to be a nice theater overall. I wish there was another option closer, as the nicest is 35 minutes away, but for a quality experience that's in a nice part of town, its worth it.

We all know pricing is a sour spot with the push towards $10 per ticket, but given the studio demands and high cost of goods, what would you, the customer, suggest to protect profits while encouraging customers to come back? (I've suggested things like date-night specials: $25 for two tickets, a drink, and popcorn)
The date night idea you suggested sounds pretty good, I can't personally think of anything else right off hand.

Have you experienced a newer 3D movie? What movie? What did you think of the technology/picture/etc? (I'm avoiding asking how the movie was, as there is a lot of criticism towards lacking plots in 3D movies)
No, I haven't seen a newer 3D.

Have you ever seen a movie with digital projection? (aka, no film) Where did you watch this movie? What did you think of the image quality?
I don't think so.

How do you choose whether to stay home and watch a movie or to go out to watch a movie?
Selection of movies and how badly I want to see one of those movies, if friends are going, etc.

What items do you think movie theatres should improve in, or add to, their concession stand?
Nothing really, the theater I go to has everything I would expect from a theater concession stand with a very flashy, modern look. However, the not-so-nice theaters should work on the flashiness of their concession areas (trivial "addition" I know, but I like modernization).

Have you ever watched a movie in a sold-out auditorium? Were you comfortable? Have you left an auditorium that was sold out due to comfort? Lack of available adjacent seating?
No. Comfort for me is generally the same whether its sold out or empty, the seats make-or-break it. I've never had a problem with getting adjacent seating, we always go very early if its a movie that will obviously come close to selling out.

Are you interested in going to a movie theatre for things like Concerts or Live 3D events?
Depends on the quality of their audio versus seeing the real concert. As for Live 3D events, I don't know, I guess it would depend on the subject matter.

How often do you watch movies? How often do you go to a theatre to watch movies?
I watch movies all the time, at least six per week (given I keep up with my 3-at-a-time Netflix plan). At the theater, usually once or twice a month.

How do you get showtime information? Is there a general time you prefer going to the movies? Do you take advantage of Matinee pricing?
Yahoo Movies. If they don't have it, for whatever reason, I go to the theater/chain's official site. As for time, I prefer to miss the 7 & after showtimes, as they are generally the most crowded with the people least likely to be quiet during the movie.

Quote:

In my area, its up surprisingly. Even with the higher prices that seem to be increasing monthly. But, as I said earlier, my area has nothing else to do, in a more entertaining area it may be different.

-How do you feel about movie theatres in general?
I really like the newer stadiums of the last decade or so. Stadium seating is a must. I sometimes like seeing big event movies with a crowd.

-Are you drawn to the theatre by the movie, or for the theatre experience?
Both. Going to the theaters with friends and seeing a new movie is a fun great experience. Of course, I will only see movies I'm interested in.

-How do you choose which theatre you go to? Which theatre do you go to most often? Do you have another option/would you prefer another option?
I go to theaters with great surround sound and stadium seating. I go to Kerasotes Village Crossing in Skokie, Illinois despite AMC Leows Norridge being just four blocks away from me. Village Crossing is about five miles away. There is also Muvico in Rosemont which is maybe three miles away. There not bad and they are a newer theater with all the amenities I prefer. The problem with them is they're a little more expensive and I've encountered some problems with their service when I've gone there. I also like that Kerasotes has a $5 movie club which I use fairly often.

There's not much they can do except kick troublemakers and those who are loud out from the show. Problem with that is they would lose more money from those people than money they would possibly gain from others.

-Have you experienced a newer 3D movie? What movie? What did you think of the technology/picture/etc? (I'm avoiding asking how the movie was, as there is a lot of criticism towards lacking plots in 3D movies)
Yes, I think the new 3D like RealD are amazing.

-Have you ever seen a movie with digital projection? (aka, no film) Where did you watch this movie? What did you think of the image quality?
I think I saw Star Wars Ep III in digital projection and maybe a couple others. They looked really good but I didn't think it was anything considerably better than some other movies I've seen that were new and the print wasn't worn.

-How do you choose whether to stay home and watch a movie or to go out to watch a movie?
It depends on my mood and if there is anything I'd want to see.

-What items do you think movie theatres should improve in, or add to, their concession stand?
More real food options. I don't always want to just east candy and garbage. And if they do decide to offer "real" food, it should also taste well too.

-Have you ever watched a movie in a sold-out auditorium? Were you comfortable? Have you left an auditorium that was sold out due to comfort? Lack of available adjacent seating?
Yes, many times for new movies on opening night. I usually don't have too much of a problem because I get there early. What does bother me are those people who arrive just as the movie starts on a busy opening night and expect to find a seat. They wander around and block your view. Guess what? If you and 10 people arrive then or even after the movie starts, you won't find a seat. Buy a ticket to a later show already!

-Are you interested in going to a movie theatre for things like Concerts or Live 3D events?
I have no interest in concerts. A live event like a sporting event might interest me.

-How often do you watch movies? How often do you go to a theatre to watch movies?
I used to go almost once a week or more but not as much now because of my schedule. As for movies at home, probably two or three a week.

-How do you get showtime information? Is there a general time you prefer going to the movies? Do you take advantage of Matinee pricing?
I get info from everywhere such as online, the paper, my phone, etc. If it's a movie I want to see but not dying to see, I'd rather go to a matinee. If I really want to see a movie, I like going opening weekend, if not the night it comes out.

-How do you feel about movie theatres in general?
They're good for certain movies, but I have to choose which ones I'm willing to pay for.

-Are you drawn to the theatre by the movie, or for the theatre experience?
Both. If the experience of a movie I really want to see is enhanced by the theater, then I like to go.

-How do you choose which theatre you go to? Which theatre do you go to most often? Do you have another option/would you prefer another option?
Whatever's closest.

-We all know pricing is a sour spot with the push towards $10 per ticket, but given the studio demands and high cost of goods, what would you, the customer, suggest to protect profits while encouraging customers to come back? Specials are always good.

-Have you experienced a newer 3D movie? What movie? What did you think of the technology/picture/etc? (I'm avoiding asking how the movie was, as there is a lot of criticism towards lacking plots in 3D movies)
No.

-Have you ever seen a movie with digital projection? (aka, no film) Where did you watch this movie? What did you think of the image quality?
Not sure.

-How do you choose whether to stay home and watch a movie or to go out to watch a movie?
If it's a movie that I really want to see, I'd rather see it sooner, at the theater. But I don't go to the theater just to go see anything.

-What items do you think movie theatres should improve in, or add to, their concession stand?
I haven't gotten anything from a concession stand in years. I'm cheap, plus I'd rather focus on the movie than how many goobers I have left.

-Have you ever watched a movie in a sold-out auditorium? Were you comfortable? Have you left an auditorium that was sold out due to comfort? Lack of available adjacent seating?
Not in recent memory.

-Are you interested in going to a movie theatre for things like Concerts or Live 3D events?
Not really.

-How often do you watch movies? How often do you go to a theatre to watch movies?
It depends; sometimes I watch movies weekly, other times monthly. I go to the theater around 1-4 times a year.

-How do you get showtime information? Is there a general time you prefer going to the movies? Do you take advantage of Matinee pricing?
I go to the theater's website, and I always go to matinee.

-Are you drawn to the theatre by the movie, or for the theatre experience?
Usually if the movie looks good enough for me not to want to wait for DVD.

-How do you choose which theatre you go to?
Well I have 3 main options where I live. One has really good popcorn and the other has stadium seating. The 3rd has nothing to offer haha.

-Have you ever seen a movie with digital projection? (aka, no film) Where did you watch this movie? What did you think of the image quality?
I'm pretty sure one of our theaters in town has digital and I think it is awesome! I was blown away the first time I saw a movie there after they upgraded. Its kind of how HD DVD is for me. DVDs seam really clear until you compare it to HD.

-What items do you think movie theatres should improve in, or add to, their concession stand?
Popcorn. Too many theatres nowadays prepop and keep a backstock of popcorn. They should make the sacrifice and schedule one more person to pop popcorn cause I think it makes all the difference in the world.

-How do you get showtime information? Is there a general time you prefer going to the movies? Do you take advantage of Matinee pricing? Internet.
I prefer late shows to try and avoid crowds and annoying teens.

I use to work at a theatre which is one of the hardest parts of going to theatres now. 3 years of free movies and popcorn (amazing popcorn at that). A movie has to look really good for me to want to put up with the annoying teens and high prices to go to the movies.

It sounds like bad experiences is your leading cause to not go to theatres. What can be done to CHANGE this opinion?

Always use theater website for showtime info. I prefer early evening shows, or shows starting at around 6 or 7. I haven't seen a theater offer matinee pricing in years; I recently saw Adventureland at like 2:00pm and it was full price.
-Using a specific theatre's site is always a good idea... unless its AMC... they have a loose connection in communication somewhere. ...Why the heck is Matinee starting before 6pm? I guess we're still old fashioned (with digital projection)

I like most of what you said... except the eat at home part. There needs to be a study done of pricing vs. sales... The less we sell, the HIGHER we have to sell for (unlike supply-demand, it becomes overhead costs vs income per guest)

Yeah, Hollywood hasn't done much to draw the business back together...

-If I had the authority to share our product and overhead costs with the public, I would be more inclined to explain this. I will tell you that Giant Eagle has a MUCH better contract with Hershey and Pepsi than ANY entertainment venue will ever have. My biggest complaint is the studio percentage of the ticket for the FIRST TWO WEEKS. With the increasingly narrow release window before DVD, it's becomming nearly impossible for a theatre to show a true "profit" on a feature. The percentage payouts need to be balanced to allows ticket profits which would lower concession costs.

When I go, which is very rarely, it's usually a combination (ie- a movie that's probably going to be better viewed on the big screen)
-What kind of movies would this be, for you?

Usually the closest place the film is playing
-Maybe shopping around could offer you better pricing and presentation?

I think we already covered the price gouging.
-Partially. But any actual suggestions you have would be helpful?

No, but I need to. Daughter wants to see Monsters vs. Aliens
Not sure
-Let me know what you think of the presentation. DLP (and digital 3D) have much clearer images without any image-shake and run much quieter than film.

40 bucks for two tickets, two drinks and one popcorn is a VERY compelling argument.
-Theatres area also in a tight position between being an entertainment venue, and the advancements in home theatre technology. In your case, if your home theatre satisifies your needs, then there isn't much the cinema can do to bring you back.

Stop smoking crack when you set the prices
-There seems to be some anger in your reply towards this topic, which means I should leave it alone. But I'm trying to get opinions from everyone about this. What would an actual suggestion be?

No, but darn near it. I'd rather wait a few weeks
-This is typically the intelligent thing to do. And with digital presentation, there is no image fade or scratching between the first and last showings.

Better places for concerts
-Yes, but the concert is not always available near you. And again, there are other possibilities.

I've probably been to theaters four times in the last three years. As I said- that audience listened.
-Is it simply pricing, or are there other factors that led you away?

Internet, earlier, and yes
-Internet is a tricky answer. Yahoo Movies typically gets our times wrong. We direct people to our website as it's hard-linked to our ticket stations for times. (and I do a lot of little updates, check it out: Welcome to Atlas Cinemas!)

Attendance is relatively flat across the industry compared to population growth. Our theatre is up about 25% over last year (but most of that is due to being less than 2 years old.) Again, theatres are in-between an entertainment venue and "a place to sit and watch a movie"... So there's no clear cut line. I would gladly invite you out to my theatre to have a chance to judge the quality we present here. I can only hope that larger chains follow and offer better quality.

Movie, if it looks like a good movie I don't want to wait the additional 3-6 months for it to come to BD/DVD.

-I'm not sure what chains are in your area, but I do know if you can find a theatre with digital presentation (picture and audio) that your Blu-Ray will be history. Typically, digital films have 7 channels of seperate audio tracks, and run at 2k resolution (4k and 6k are out there, but most people won't notice a difference)

The date night idea you suggested sounds pretty good, I can't personally think of anything else right off hand.
-Thanks

No, I haven't seen a newer 3D.
I don't think so.
-Based on your Blu-Ray quality comment. Look around for one.

Selection of movies and how badly I want to see one of those movies, if friends are going, etc.
-How do you feel about the lineup this summer?

Nothing really, the theater I go to has everything I would expect from a theater concession stand with a very flashy, modern look. However, the not-so-nice theaters should work on the flashiness of their concession areas (trivial "addition" I know, but I like modernization).
-More lights? Posters? Smiling employees? (the last one is a BIG problem at most places)

No. Comfort for me is generally the same whether its sold out or empty, the seats make-or-break it. I've never had a problem with getting adjacent seating, we always go very early if its a movie that will obviously come close to selling out.
-I agree, seating and leg-room (and other guests behavior) have a much bigger impact on me than the number of people.

Depends on the quality of their audio versus seeing the real concert. As for Live 3D events, I don't know, I guess it would depend on the subject matter.
-As mentioned, audio is typically 7 channel (live might be 5)... What other events might you be interested in?

I watch movies all the time, at least six per week (given I keep up with my 3-at-a-time Netflix plan). At the theater, usually once or twice a month.
-This seems to be a bit above average. Although, slightly behind myself

Yahoo Movies. If they don't have it, for whatever reason, I go to the theater/chain's official site. As for time, I prefer to miss the 7 & after showtimes, as they are generally the most crowded with the people least likely to be quiet during the movie.
-That would typically be the teenage showtime. A lot of them don't even watch the movie.

In my area, its up surprisingly. Even with the higher prices that seem to be increasing monthly. But, as I said earlier, my area has nothing else to do, in a more entertaining area it may be different.
You have to also consider that a slacking economy means a movie is a "cheaper" entertainment venue outside the home than others. In a growing economy, we're the "expensive" way to watch movies.

If I'm near Cleveland anytime soon, I'll take you up on that. I'd like to see what you're offering, and I always like patronizing businesses that benefit my friends.

By the way, I went to a theater this morning- had to see Star Trek. I'm nobody's Trekkie, but I am a fan. Buddy found nice ticket prices. popcorn and diet coke were ridiculous, but they were also optional.

-How do you feel about movie theatres in general?
Meh... many are overrated and don't really give me any incentive to be loyal to a chain or anything.
-Are you drawn to the theatre by the movie, or for the theatre experience?
Movie
-How do you choose which theatre you go to? Which theatre do you go to most often? Do you have another option/would you prefer another option?
Well, seeing that now Regal has a monopoly in my immediate area, I end up going to either the one in Opry Mills (Old Opryland for your coaster geeks) or Providence (Mt. Juliet). I like some of the Carmike cinemas, but the nearest one is about 20 mins away.
-We all know pricing is a sour spot with the push towards $10 per ticket, but given the studio demands and high cost of goods, what would you, the customer, suggest to protect profits while encouraging customers to come back?
Make cheaper movies?
-Have you experienced a newer 3D movie? What movie? What did you think of the technology/picture/etc? (I'm avoiding asking how the movie was, as there is a lot of criticism towards lacking plots in 3D movies)
Not yet.
-Have you ever seen a movie with digital projection? (aka, no film) Where did you watch this movie? What did you think of the image quality?
Yes... Star Wars Episode III, Clerks II, Jackass II, the new Star Trek, several others. I like the quality of the picture. Of course, it depends on type of film. Many are served better by having digital projection.
-How do you choose whether to stay home and watch a movie or to go out to watch a movie?
Whether or not the movie is a must see for me.
-What items do you think movie theatres should improve in, or add to, their concession stand?
Cheaper goods, better service
-Have you ever watched a movie in a sold-out auditorium? Were you comfortable? Have you left an auditorium that was sold out due to comfort? Lack of available adjacent seating?
I've been in a sold out auditorium. Not a problem for me really.
-Are you interested in going to a movie theatre for things like Concerts or Live 3D events?
If I want to go to a concert or live event, I'm going to the real deal.
-How often do you watch movies? How often do you go to a theatre to watch movies?
I watch a lot of movies, but only go to the theatre when it's a must see for me.
-How do you get showtime information? Is there a general time you prefer going to the movies? Do you take advantage of Matinee pricing?
Internet. Most movies I take avantage of matinee pricing. In the case of Star Trek, I did pay full bore... twice (once by myself, and once with friends who wanted to go see it). That movie was worth it to me. If I do see it again, I'm going to do the IMAX version.

How do you feel about movie theaters in general? While I enjoy going to the theater to see a movies with friends I have found myself goign less and holding off visits to specific movies. thay are getting way too expensive.
Are you drawn to the theater by the movie, or for the theater experience? The movie, 90% of theaters are so generic in design there isn't much of an experience to get.
How do you choose which theater you go to? I prefer stadium seating, good sound and picture quality. I often go with a friend in a wheel chair so the theater has to be accommodating and the seating are a not right on top of the screen.
Which theater do you go to most often? A Cinimagic theater a couple towns over, I like the Showcase in Lowell MA but it's a 35 minutes drive.
Do you have another option/would you prefer another option? I would prefer another option just for Movie time selection. there is a Chunkey's (cinima, restaurant, pub near by)
We all know pricing is a sour spot with the push towards $10 per ticket, but given the studio demands and high cost of goods, what would you, the customer, suggest to protect profits while encouraging customers to come back? (I've suggested things like date-night specials: $25 for two tickets, a drink, and popcorn) I like the date night idea if it can save a couple bucks. Maybe a rewards program that woudl award you a free Large soda after so many movies seen. Maybe a Classic or retro movie night with movies thay can show at a much lower cost (double feature posibly)
Have you experienced a newer 3D movie? What movie? Only in Imax, It's not worth the theaters surcharge. Local Imax screens are cheaper.I have seen Polar Express, number of Imax movies(Journey of man, Ghosts of the Abyss, Aliens of the deep, Journey through time.
What did you think of the technology/picture/etc? (I'm avoiding asking how the movie was, as there is a lot of criticism towards lacking plots in 3D movies) Imax is good quality and differs from Smaller scale. but the new digital projectors in many theaters are very good quality in general.
Have you ever seen a movie with digital projection? (aka, no film) Where did you watch this movie? What did you think of the image quality? Yes,I guess I should have read ahead. Showcase Cinema in Lowell Ma and Cinimagic in Merrimcack NH both offer Digital projection theaters.
How do you choose whether to stay home and watch a movie or to go out to watch a movie? Effects and scale of teh movie. I rarely watch droma, Comedies, etc in theaters it's not worth it. you get nothing from seeing it on a large screen.
What items do you think movie theatres should improve in, or add to, their concession stand? The pricing is terrible 4-5 dollars for a soda is way too much. I like real food like Chicken fingers, a value mean might be nice. Pay less to get a drink, food item and fries.
Have you ever watched a movie in a sold-out auditorium? Yes
Were you comfortable? Yes, crowds don't bother me
Have you left an auditorium that was sold out due to comfort? Lack of available adjacent seating? no, I and my group normally make a point to get there early.
Are you interested in going to a movie theatre for things like Concerts or Live 3D events? No
How often do you watch movies? I watch movies a few times a week.
How often do you go to a theater to watch movies?1 maybe 2 times a months. less in the mid release seasons. Very little in teh summer, I go to my local drive in, Milford drive in, Since we can see 2 movies a night at a 20 dollar car load(up to 6 people)
How do you get showtime information? Online, IMDB, Yahoo, I hate most theaters web sites, Cinimagic's is horrible.
Is there a general time you prefer going to the movies? Do you take advantage of Matinee pricing? I go early, I take advantage of the matinee price. Why pay the theaters more then I have to

The only theater I go to for a theater goign experience is the Wilton Town hall theater. It's an old time theater, not a grand theater but still has a lot of character. The Drive in gets most of my business in the summer. I will watch movies I normally don't in a box theater. Because of the group rate and the Double feature set up.

Honestly, nothing can change that. The reason is simply that I'm just not a movie person in general. And even if there is a movie that I'd like to check out, I'm going to watch it on DVD in the comfort of my own home; I just like the comfort of my own place instead of the crowded and cramped theaters. And I get more out of the movie watching on DVD: watch at my own pace and cost efficient.

I like my local AMC overall for theme. The local Regal though I have gift cards for. It took me 2 years to use those cards because I've only really been out to IMAX to see Dark Knight only the last year. I do not buy concessions.

Brands for theaters means nothing to me especially in this area. AMC bought out a couple chains in this area so there is now an AMC in Tingsborough MA but it's really just the same old theater that used to be there. it did get new rugs and paint. Movie quality isn't any better and the same old Slop seating. There are Regals in this area but again Regal bought out a chain called premier in this area and simply through their name on the same crappy theaters that have been around for the last 25 years. no real changes a cured. There are in now way the same grandeur and style of the Regal cinema i used to go to in Augusta GA.

How can I make our website better?

Welcome to Atlas Cinemas!

I've been promoted and put in charge of marketing. Were a small local chain, so I'm just looking for opinions. Please pay attention to the URL, we have no control over the "printtixusa" pages that provide online ticket sales for us.

Thanks

I've been keeping track of the old twin plex, the 4 screens, the 8's, keeping up with locations past and present over the years just like I kind of have with retail.
