The Whole Controller Thing

Okay- This is somthing that bugs me about the whole Xbox vs. Gamecube war. Okay, lots of people are comparing the controllers, OK! Look, Dont saw Xbox is horrible for the controllers because, ever think you could buy a different controller for Xbox? Or Gamnecube? or PS2? So please think when you base systems on controllers, it makes no sense at all! Because theres allways a way around it! If your going to compare consoles, compare them by stuff they CANT change, like the actual proccesors and stuff inside the console, rather then what you can change. Yes I know, you all want to base controllers, the ones you get WITH the consoles, but theres a way around it, and yes, dont just say a system sucks just by the controller..................

Well, my big problem about the XBOX controller and even 3rd party XBOX controller is the massive size of it! I played NHL Hitz 2002 again today, and that thing is like holding a basketball with buttons on it and trying to play a game. Also, not just base XBOX controllers have this problem, because 3rd party controllers can't change the layout of the buttons and, i don't think they can change the size of the controller either. The only real difference between base controllers and 3rd party ones is that they are made by a different company, and may have a few changes such as new buttons and 'look'.

So, if XBOX fixes the size of their controller and layout of their buttons, then I would be fine with it.

The Interact contollers for Xbox have the Interact logo in the middle, so it is just about the same size as the regualr controllers.

I think the controller is a major item to look at in determining wat to get. I tried both controllers, and after trying XBox, I just screwed that and went with Gamecube. If the controller is bad, then no matter how well the game is, the controller is going to keep bothering me.

I totally agree, CeDaRPoInTzTeR. To me, the controller is a huge factor in which system to buy. The Gamecube and PS2 controllers are just sooo much more comfy than the XBox controller.

Am I the only one in this world who thinks that the X-Box controller is the greatest ever?

It's really not all that big. The Gameube controller is basically a ripoff of PlayStations controller. The X-Box controller is perfect! It positions your hands right where you need them. I have no problems with it.

Thats what I did when deciding between the N64 and PS. It had helped that I played the PS before and was somewhat familiar. It was similar to that of the SNES controller.

Yes, but you can always get new controllers from other componies with slightly different layouts and sizes so I agree with the first post!

Yeah that is why I like it. But I didn't buy a X-Box because I liked the controller I bought it for the games. Nintendo did try to copy Playstation and did well a ok job. I hate the new Z button location. The Madcatz X-Box Controller is much more like the Dreamcast controller how the buttons are layed out. If you buy a system for a controller thats sad. Just buy the controller then don't waste the 200-300 bucks for the system

And XBox isn't? It's more like PlayStation controllers than Gamecube's are. And, Playstation controllers could be considered ripoffs of the SNES controllers.

I really would like to know how the GameCube controller is in anyway similar to the dual shock 2. They're different sizes, different shapes, and the button layout is completely different. The playstations button layout for the face buttons are in a + shape while the GCN buttons are more in the shape of an inverted T. The dual shock's shoulder buttons are much more in the fair of the SNES R and L buttons (in that that sit on top of the controller) while the GCN shoulder buttons sit towards the back of the controller like trigger buttons. Also the dual shocks direction pad is on the far right side, while that is the location of the analog stick for the GCN pad. The only similarity, and I mean ONLY, is the location of the right analog stick and they are even completely different types of sticks. The dual shock has much more of a boxy look and feel to it while the GCN pad is more rounded and erganomical. Also don't forget that all of the buttons on the dual shock are analog while only the L and R buttons on the GCN pad are. If you really want to talk about stealing controller design look no further than the Xbox controller. I have never seen such a close rip off in my life. The controller looks almost identical to the Dreamcast pad just with 2 extra useless buttons and a slightly rotated layout. The triggers are identical and so are the slots and analog sticks. And yes, controllers are a big part of my decision to buy a certain system. It is hard to enjoy a game when your constanty hitting two buttons at once because they're too close together, and when your hands cramp up because the pad is too big and non-erganomical. When people prefer 3rd party controllers to the 1st party ones you know the company dropped the ball.

My favorite controller is definitely the GameCube controller. The only problem with it is the z button, but once you get used to it that's not even much of a problem. My hands don't cramp or ache at all. The only time I've felt anything in my fingers was on my left thumb after playing SSX Tricky for a long time (because of the digital pad).

My hands do cramp a little bit when using the Dual Shock 2, and my right thumb has gotten pretty sore from holding down the X button in Gran Turismo 3 for a long time.

My wrists tend to get sore after a while of playing my GameBoy Advance because its a bit too small for me, and the shoulder buttons are too short in length. I end up contorting my hands (as they are fairly large) in order to be able to press the A/B buttons along with the R shoulder button.

At the time that I saw the Dreamcast controllers and played with them for the first time I thought they were absolutely the ungliest thing I'd seen in a long time... until I saw the Xbox controller. The Xbox controller is a huge ripoff of the Dreamcast controller. I'm not sure why they would pick one of the worst controllers out there to rip off, but they did, and managed to make it even worse. My hands and wrists ache after about 10 minutes on the Xbox controller. I tried various ways of holding it, but nothing seemed to work. This was a big reason why I got rid of my Xbox.

My controller rankings:

1. GameCube
2. PS2
3. GameBoy Advance
4. Dreamcast
5. Xbox

IMO XBOX's controllers are perfect. i think that GC's controllers are way too small. i have 2 microsoft, 1 mad catz, and 1 interact controllers for the XBOX. mt favorite is the mad catz, it is just perfect, not too big, and all the buttons are perfect. there is really nothing bad about having a good 3rd party controller. and if you really want to get a good XBOX controller, get the jappanese one, its built for people with smaller hands. i loved dreamcasts controllers also. i just think that PS, PS2, and GC controllers are way too small.
